Trump: Middle East Leaders Agreed to Stop Funding Islamism

President Trump today indicated that Muslim leaders he met with in Saudi Arabia earlier this week agreed to stop funding the ideologies that lead to to terrorism.

Trump said during remarks in Brussels:

This call for driving out terrorism is a message I took to a historic gathering of Arab and Muslim leaders across the region, hosted by Saudi Arabia. There, I spent much time with King Salman, a wise man who wants to see things get much better rapidly. The leaders of the Middle East have agreed at this unprecedented meeting to stop funding the radical ideology that leads to this horrible terrorism all over the globe.

My travels and meetings have given me renewed hope that nations of many faiths can unite to defeat terrorism, a common threat to all of humanity. Terrorism must be stopped in its tracks, or the horror you saw in Manchester and so many other places will continue forever. You have thousands and thousands of people pouring into our various countries and spreading throughout, and in many cases, we have no idea who they are. We must be tough. We must be strong. And we must be vigilant.

The Saudis, of course, have been particularly guilty of tolerating extremist ideology and spreading it throughout the world.

I doubt the funding is going to stop. But maybe some of it will. This is progress, and hopefully Trump will hold them accountable. His call for Arab leaders to cease supporting radicalism is based on an understanding that the Islamist threat is not just some extremist movement, but part of what is going on within Arab societies.

Nevertheless, Trump has backed off some of his campaign thinking on the topic, saying in his Saudi speech that, “Terrorists do not worship God, they worship death.” Unfortunately, that’s not correct. Thinkers from the activist moderate Muslim Hirsi Ali to Egyptian President Sisi understand that there is a problem within Islam that has to change. But it looks like National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster got to Trump with his insistence that the terrorism has nothing to do with Islam.

Or maybe not quite. Trump used the term “Islamic extremism,” which he was not supposed to do, during his address in Saudi Arabia. He was slated to say “Islamist,” which is a term held to be less intrinsic to the religion itself and more descriptive of radicalism that exists outside it.

“That means honestly confronting the crisis of Islamic extremism and the Islamists and Islamic terror of all kinds,” he said. The prepared remarks called for him to say: “That means honestly confronting the crisis of Islamist extremism and the Islamist terror groups it inspires.”

Anonymous White House advisors he was just tired. But I don’t think he’s as much of an idiot as some of his aides do. I think he knew what he was doing.

Nevertheless, frustrated that the president went off their carefully crafted script, the White House released Trump’s remarks as prepared for delivery. AFTER he gave the speech.

Normally the White House puts out the actual transcript of his remarks. In this case, as far as I can tell, they didn’t.

Hopefully Trump will continue to be Trump, despite voices within the administration trying to make him Jeb Bush.

Obama’s Egypt Policy Leading to an Islamist Takeover

Ahh, it’s Arab spring, and the smell of Islamic fundamentalism is in the air.

Gosh I hate to be right. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

I wrote in February that Obama was being hasty shoving Mubarak aside, that it would preclude the type of transition we want.

Israel and our Arab allies in the region, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, think we are making a mistake by pushing Mubarak out right away. They know their region . . .

Once Mubarak gets on a plane and heads for the Ritz Carlton Doha, an immense power vacuum is created, the giant sucking sound of which will be animated by every fundamentalist America-hater who can be found in Egypt.

The people of Egypt will never love America. They won’t – it’s shocking for the White House – even love Obama. And once the Muslim Brotherhood is running Egypt, they will suffer, and so will we. And Egyptians will get plenty of violence.

Well, Islamist rule has been ordered, and it’s on the way, as this piece in today’s Wall Street Journal makes clear. Average Egyptians cheered the other day as liberal reformers were cleared once and for all from Tahrir Square.

Elections have been pushed to November, but the liberals and the secularists appear not to have taken advantage of the delay. Instead of organizing themselves into a coherent bloc, they have set up minuscule rival parties and feuded among themselves, say analysts and diplomats.

“There is a power game going on—and the liberals and the entire secular movement are the weaker element, while the Islamists and the army are strong,” said Laila Soueif, a liberal activist and human-rights campaigner who teaches at Cairo University.

The army will do well under the Mullahs, and be given much work to do.

To cap off the Jimmy Carterization of his presidency – bad economy, rising federal spending, growing disrespect abroad, etc. – President Obama is on the way to turning our foremost ally in the Middle East into a fiefdom ruled by America hating, medieval mullahs intent on acquiring 21st century weaponry with which to destroy us. Just like Jimmy did with Iran.

I doubt Obama is giving it a thought. Too busy bullying Israel into dealing with Hamas.

Obama’s Very Own Cold War

President Obama’s State of the Union speech focused mainly on minor proposals and second-tier issues like college tuition tax credits and the like. The president, fresh from his “outreach” to Iran, doesn’t seem to understand that he’s engaged in his very own Cold War, and that’s where his attention must lie.

The enemy in Obama’s Cold War is not Communism, but Islamism. And Obama’s misunderstanding of the enemy’s intentions – the destruction of the West – threatens to sink his presidency in the same way Jimmy Carter’s misunderstanding of Russia and miscalculation on Iran sunk his.

Carter thought the Soviets, who sought no less than world dominiation, could be reasoned with, and was shocked when the country invaded Afghanistan. Obama was naive in his outreach to Iran, whose leadership will not rest until Western culture is destroyed and supplanted, and he must be similarly shocked that his outstretched hand has been spit on.

Today, Islamists are eying all sorts of exciting opportunities, and Obama must draw his attention from boutique “investments” in America’s future that he spent most of his State of the Union wallowing in and turn his gaze toward the nation’s survival.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the fall of Iran to the Aytoallah’s are among the most significant foreign policy events – and failures – of the last half century, because they both played a critical role in launching the wave of Islamic radicalism we face today.

Like all extremist insurgencies, from the Bolsheviks in 1917 to the Nazis in 1933, Islamists are lying in wait, willing to abide by the prevailing, civil rules of play before emerging to brutally assert themselves and seize control.

In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood is carefully avoiding taking a prominent role in the alliance opposing Mubarak, knowing that to do so risks alienating the broad segment of Egyptians who oppose it. It will seek to join a coalition government, and then start dominating and eventually killing off its partners.

In Tunisia, the long exiled Islamist leader has just returned to a triumphant welcome. He’s claiming to be a moderate. That’s to be expected. In Lebanon, Hezbollah is completing its takeover of he government.

A sweep into power across the Middle East of Islamists backed by Iran’s Mullahs is not yet assured. It is Obama’s mission to fight his Cold War, and prevent it from happening.

But from the early outreach to Iran to the unwillingness to meet the military’s request for troops in Afghanistan, there’s little evidence he has the stomach for the fight or even the understanding he needs to do it.

Hopefully he does, because the battle is enjoined now, and will not wait until 2012.

There’s a great piece in the Wall Street Journal today by Paul Kengor, author of the marvelous book “Dupes: How America’s Adversaries Have Manipulated Progressives for a Century.” He writes of Washington’s shock when Reagan, during his first press conference, casually confided that the Soviets were as bad as THEY said they were.

Reagan calmly explained that the Soviet leadership had “openly and publicly declared that the only morality they recognize is what will further their cause, meaning they reserve unto themselves the right to commit any crime, to lie, to cheat.”

Reagan continued, explaining that the Soviets considered their relativistic behavior “moral, not immoral.” This was something that the United States needed to “keep . . . in mind” when doing “business” with Moscow.

American voters outside the Beltway were not shocked. They put Reagan in office for a reason.

If Obama fails to understand, confront and abate the evil that we now face, Americans will replace him with someone who gets it, just like they did Carter.
