CDC admits it screwed up, prepares for overhaul

Oh well, maybe they’ll do better next pandemic.

According to Politico:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is launching an overhaul of its structure and operations in an attempt to modernize the agency and rehabilitate its reputation following intense criticism of its handling of the coronavirus pandemic and, more recently, the growing monkeypox outbreak.

On Wednesday, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky shared a series of changes with CDC leadership and staff designed to “transform” the organization and its work culture by improving how the agency shares information, develops public health guidance and communicates with the American public.

“For 75 years, CDC and public health have been preparing for COVID-19, and in our big moment, our performance did not reliably meet expectations,” Walensky said in a statement. “As a long-time admirer of this agency and a champion for public health, I want us all to do better.”

The CDC restructuring follows two reviews conducted in recent months . . .

The reviews concluded that the “traditional scientific and communication processes were not adequate to effectively respond to a crisis the size and scope of the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to an agency statement.

  1. Too little, too late. I’ll never believe a word they say again, and will do my own homework to learn the truth of anything.

Not only is the CDC useless by interfering with the ability of people to choose an informed treatment from the caregiver they trust, it is allowing truly bad new diseases to go unnoticed, not bothering with publicity campaigns, offering little to no useful recommendations.

A good example is the CDC’s complete failure in 8 years to identify the actual cause of the new polio-like illness that arrived in 2014, and has paralyzed ~700 or more American children in alternate years since. The COVID shutdown in 2020 saved approximately 200 kids from catching whatever-it-is, due to their isolation from carriers.

While the CDC claims AFM might be caused by an enterovirus, they have no proof, not even very reliable guesses and only a very small number of the affected children actually had that germ. By failing to publicize this disease that is continually damaging children, the CDC loses access to data that might help solve the problem of how to protect against it.

Yet “monkeypox” – an easily preventable disease that doesn’t pose a danger to the general population – is being given high priority publicity and funding.

I seriously doubt the CDC’s PR Makeover will change failures such as these, because the causes of that are built into the agency and every person who works for it.

  2. We’ll NEVER trust anything that comes from The CDC again. It’s too late for them to revamp their image, that ship has sailed!
