In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

Biden selects Kamala Harris as his running mate

Joe Biden Tuesday named California Sen. Kamala Harris to be his running mate.

“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” Biden tweeted. In a text message to supporters, Biden said, “Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump”

Harris and Biden will both make remarks in Wilmington Wednesday. No word on whether they will be in the basement or upstairs or whether Biden might venture outside the house.

Despite fizzling out in the Democratic primaries, Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India,  has a proven track record of winning elections.

Harris, 55, was elected San Francisco district attorney and then the California state attorney general before becoming senator. The law enforcement background could be reassuring to some independents but may anger those on the left Biden needs to turn out in November.

Nevertheless, she failed with a national audience. To some, she came off as a bit contrived and calculating in an age that demands authenticity. And her campaign lacked organization and direction.

Biden’s choice suggests he is assuming the left will turn out for him and that he doesn’t need to placate them with a more radical vice-presidential choice. In any case, his platform has been moving steadily left, drifting far from the relative moderation of previous Democratic nominees. Make no mistake. If Biden wins and the Democrats control the Senate, radical leftism will be in charge and make sweeping, destructive, and potentially unalterable changes.

Harris could also gin up excitement among black voters, whom Biden needs to show up at the polls, as they did for Barack Obama.

She will also help Biden address some of his weaknesses. For example, she is decades away from senility, and Biden appears to be losing brain cells by the minute. Maybe he can borrow some of hers.

The pick continues the recent trend of not choosing a running mate for the delegate they can provide. Biden already has California well wrapped up. Instead, like Trump’s choice of Mike Pence and George W. Bush’s of Dick Cheney, she was tapped for the value she personally brings to the ticket.

Perhaps the most salient is simply that people can see her as president. She has the intelligence, charisma and status to be viewed as a potential president.

Given Biden’s deteriorating condition, that is perhaps the biggest reason why this is the best choice he could have made.

The Trump campaign was ready with an ad.

“In her failed attempt at running for president, Kamala Harris gleefully embraced the left’s radical manifesto, calling for trillions of dollars in new taxes and backing Bernie Sanders’ government takeover of health care,” said Trump campaign adviser Katrina Pierson. “She is proof that Joe Biden is an empty shell being filled with the extreme agenda of the radicals on the left.”

Obama was too, saying Biden “nailed” the choice:

I’ve known Senator Harris for a long time. She is more than prepared for the job. She’s spent her career defending our Constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake,” he said. “Her own life story is one that I and so many others can see ourselves in: a story that says that no matter where you come from, what you look like, how you worship, or who you love, there’s a place for you here.”

Obama has also suggested in the past that he thinks Harris is hot.

    1. So…Biden’s staff picked an uppity, ambitious, sneaky, mean, not-very-smart, dishonest “minority checklist” b#tch from Democratic Socialist California.

  1. After calling Biden a ‘Racist’ among other things challenging his credentials, this is typical “just believe me now” B.S.

  2. All Pres Trump has to do is shine a big light on her atrocious record as a prosecutor. As the State Atty General of CA, she was more than willing to trample over the rights of innocent and disadvantaged people and abuse her prosecutorial power for political gain. As district attorney, Harris couldn’t muster the basic decency and sense of fairness to respect the constitutional rights of criminal defendants whose liberty was at risk. She has an abysmal prosecution record. And then there is the Willie Brown affair. It’s almost too easy.

  3. Despite her winning elections, she is not well liked here in California…she has a smugness about her and doesn’t come across as being particularly bright. This was on full display during her presidential campaign, which fizzled out by December.

  4. It disgusts me that the primary platform Dems are running on is “beat Trump”. They aren’t even trying to tell us why they believe they’d be better for Americans. They’re just running on “I’m not Trump” or “Ya, I’m racist but not as racist as Trump”. It’s sad Biden thinks he’s entitled to Obama’s voters simply because he was Obama’s VP and JD his endorsement. I have a sickening feeling it’ll work too.

  5. Looks to me like Plugs already knows he’s lost.

If he was actually serious, then along with announcing Jerry Brown’s former mistress as his running mate, he’d have announced his pick for presidential taster.

Harris is Game of Thrones level ambitious, and it doesn’t exactly help that she has so much baggage attached to her name, that she could easily be called Samsonite.

      1. Brain cramp. I stand corrected.

Either way, she still got into one of the world’s older professions, by way of the oldest profession.
