In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

Trump cancels Jacksonville convention

President Trump today said he is canceling the Republican convention, acknowledging that the raging pandemic in Florida had made it unsafe.

Trump spoke to reporters at the White House:

I looked at my team and I said, the timing for this event is not right. It’s just not right with what’s happened recently, the flareup in Florida, to have a big convention, it’s not the right time. For me, I have to protect the American people.

Trump said delegates in Charlotte, North Carolina would nominate him and there would be an online component to the convention. He said he will do a “convention speech,” but without a large audience.

The Republican convention was to take place August 24-27. The Democrats have already said their convention, which will take place the week before, will be conducted online.

  1. That will work.
National conventions have turned over the years into boring 5 hour marathons of banal speeches by mostly unknowns that drag on for days.
There’s no mystery who the candidates will be on the Nov ballot.
The only ? is the Dem VP candidate and we already know it’s to be a “woman of color”. zzzz

  2. Good for Trump. A big convention would have been a lot of fun and a lot of publicity, but once again he has chosen the American people over his own happiness.

  3. Conventions are about hoopla and generating revenue for the host city. This can be done on line, with live TV, etc. Jax is a great town, would have been a terrific “show”. But for now, we do what we can…. Most likely they made the right move.
