Trump Administration Fines Illegal Immigrants Up to $500K for Failing to Leave

According to NPR, which can’t be happy about this:

The Trump administration is seeking to fine some immigrants, who are in the United States illegally, hundreds of thousands of dollars for failing to take steps to leave after being ordered to do so, according to government documents obtained by NPR.

The Department of Homeland Security sent out a batch of notices across the country to targeted individuals ordering them to pay fines of up to nearly $500,000 for “failing to depart the U.S. as previously agreed,” among other factors.

It’s the latest hard-line effort by the administration as it clamps down on illegal immigration at the border and increases interior enforcement.

“It is the intention of ICE to order you pay a fine in the amount of $497,777,” Lisa Hoechst, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, wrote to Edith Espinal Moreno in a letter dated June 25, 2019, obtained by NPR from lawyers for Moreno.

The letters come as the Trump administration prepares to carry out delayed immigration sweeps of migrant families who have received deportation orders. President Trump said Monday, while signing legislation providing $4.6 billion in funding to address the influx of migrants from Central America, that the immigration raids will begin after the July 4 holiday if Congress can’t pass new restrictions on asylum laws.

  1. I LOVE this! Enforce all the Immigration laws to the fullest extent!

When I saw this the other day, I looked up Edith Espinal Moreno. NPR got a few things wrong in their article. She is no “dreamer brought as a child”.
She is a serial border crosser who has been deported previously, and lived in Mexico for years. She’s been an activist for a long time, not just suddenly. All of her children – one of which was born in Mexico – are full grown and out of the house so she is not being “separated” from them.
She is claiming she wants asylum but has no believable claims. In fact, the judge called her story “incredible”.

This is from her appeal of her claim for asylum, which was denied & denied on appeal: Edith Moreno vs Jefferson Sessions:
“Moreno was born in Michoacán, Mexico. She entered the United States in 1995 at the age of 17 with her father and resided in Ohio for two years, after which she returned to Mexico. Moreno spent three years in Mexico until she again entered the United States illegally in 2000. After living in the United States for nine years, the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) instituted removal proceedings against Moreno, who opted for voluntary departure. On September 30, 2013, Moreno again attempted to reenter the United States, whereby she was apprehended by authorities. DHS issued a Notice to Appear on October 1, 2013, charging Moreno with removability under 8 U.S.C. § 1182(a)(7)(A)(i)(I), as an alien not in possession of a valid entry document. Moreno appeared before an immigration judge on March 19, 2014, and conceded through counsel that she was removable. Instead of contesting her removability, she applied for asylum, the withholding of removal, and CAT protection.”

  2. So if I broke into Pelosi, Schummer or AOC expensive, upper class, luxury estates or apartments and started living there would I be an “Undocumented Guest”…??? -lol :-(
