In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

Never Trumpers Cave: Trump Unlikely to Face Primary Challenger

Potential challengers to President Trump were waiting for the Mueller report, hoping it would show collusion with Russia. It didn’t.

Now, they and the Never Trump conservatives who want to oust the president have given up on a primary challenge, which could have ruined the president’s chances, even if he won the primary. Just ask Lyndon Johnson, Gerald Ford, and George H.W. Bush, all of whom failed to gain reelection – Johnson quit, of course – after incurring a serious problem in the primaries.

According to the Washington Examiner:

Never Trump Republicans have all but given up on mounting a serious primary challenge to President Trump in the aftermath of special counsel Robert Mueller’s failure to find Trump campaign collusion with Russia.

“I think there’s broad consensus that no one is moving toward a run,” said Rob Stutzman, a Republican consultant in California who for several months has been involved in discussions about dislodging Trump.

Trump remains broadly popular with Republican voters, and one of the most formidable potential challengers, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, announced over the weekend he would forgo a 2020 bid.

Some Never Trump Republicans are even contemplating quietly redirecting their energy toward boosting Joe Biden, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, saying this strategy might be their only viable option. Many Republicans uncomfortable with Trump view the former vice president, an old-school liberal, as an acceptable Democrat, at least compared to the modern liberals that comprise most of the rest of that party’s crowded field.

“Even if Mueller had obtained some sort of smoking gun, it probably still wouldn’t have moved [Trump’s] base,” conceded a Republican prominent in the Never Trump movement, who requested anonymity in order to speak candidly. “Trump is going to be the Republican nominee.”

  1. “Acceptable Democrat”?

They have truly lost their goddamn minds.

Bill Clinton won in 1992 by sounding like a moderate, only to go hard left once in office. Fool me once, shame on you.

King Barry the Wicked did a variation on the same trick play: campaigned as a uniter, governed as a divider. Fool me twice, shame on me.

And yet, these so-called GOP “professionals” are apparently going to let themselves be fooled thrice. Even the aphorists of old, couldn’t have foreseen this level of gullibility.

And they still don’t know why Trump won.

  2. It is about control… and swampers see no friend in Trump. So he must go..

BTW… few protesters around Trump in London…. so I think that the Anti-Trump is a vocal small group that seems bigger than what it is…

  3. Kasich is approaching a run. He won’t stop Trump from getting the nomination, not by a long shot, but he could make some noise in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where Trump is significantly weaker than he was four years ago.

    1. I live in Ohio. Kasich isn’t that popular and I doubt he will have much of an impact. Even less than in 2012, I suspect.

  4. The never-Trumpers will be as successful in 2020 as they were in 2016..losers.
No doubt they will re-double their attacks and throw money to the Dem candidate, but in the end, eh, not going to win.

  5. I think Mark Cuban still toys with the idea of opposing Trump. He recently said Biden could defeat Trump. I don’t see anyone defeating Trump. Remember Cuban hired Dan Rather for his network. He told Rather to shake things up. I am not a fan of Cuban.
