President Trump Tuesday showed defiance after a ruling by Los Angeles-based U.S. District Court Judge Dolly Gee that children of illegal immigrants could not be detained indefinitely with their parents.
The ruling, which likely will be appealed, poses a challenge to Trump’s recent executive order seeking to end the separation of families by allowing children to be detained with their parents.
Trump spoke to reporters before departing for Brussels for the NATO Summit:
I have a solution. Tell people not to come to our country illegally. That’s the solution. Don’t come to our country illegally. Come like other people do. Come legally . . . We have laws. We have borders. Don’t come to our country illegally. It’s not a good thing.
“Absolutely nothing prevents [the administration] from reconsidering their current blanket policy of family detention and reinstating prosecutorial discretion,” Gee wrote.
By prosecutorial discretion, she means “catch and release.”
The point Trump will make is that nothing prevents Congress from changing the law to allow families to be held together. But Schumer and Pelosi would rather have a political issue than help families.
Here is Trump’s short meeting with reporters on the South Lawn.
And I’m sorry, if I get accused of sexism, so be it. But Melania looks incredible. I don’t think she’d mind me saying it at all, nor would he. And frankly, if you can’t call a beautiful woman beautiful anymore without everyone assuming that means you think she’s a dummy, or complaining that it must mean someone else is not beautiful, then there is something very wrong. We objectify each other all day long. And we do have standards. It’s human nature, something liberals are constantly fighting against.
