Don’t Get the Wrong Idea About the Mueller Probe September “Wrap-up” Date

From the New York Times:

The special counsel hopes to finish by Sept. 1 the investigation into whether President Trump obstructed the Russia inquiry, according to the president’s lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, who said on Sunday that waiting any longer would risk improperly influencing voters in November’s midterm elections.

Mr. Giuliani said that the office of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, shared its timeline about two weeks ago amid negotiations over whether Mr. Trump will be questioned by investigators, adding that Mr. Mueller’s office said that the date was contingent on Mr. Trump’s sitting for an interview. A spokesman for the special counsel’s office declined to comment.

Wrapping up the obstruction case would not signal the end of Mr. Mueller’s work. That is one piece of his broader inquiry, a counterintelligence investigation into Russia’s campaign to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump associates coordinated with it. Counterintelligence investigations are used to gather information quietly about the activities of foreign powers and their agents — sometimes for years — and can result in criminal charges.

First of all, it’s a hope, not a commitment. And it is contingent upon Mueller being able to interview Trump. So in fact, Mueller is using the wrap-up date as leverage to get Trump to talk.

And note we are just talking about the “obstruction” side of the inquirty, not the “collusion.

Also, this is Washington. Nothing gets done on time. Expect the probe to continue right through the election, as Democrats hope, and well into next year.

  1. Mueller has to continue doing something at least until the midterm elections are over. If the Dems don’t take over the House and there’s no impeachment vote, then the “investigation” will continue until the end of the 2020 election.
The Repub majority in Congress would be doing everyone a favor if they defunded the Mueller investigation, then buried all the information into some Super Secret You Can’t See It file.

  2. I read last week that if the Democrats retake the House impeachment proceedings would have to start in the Judiciary Committee. The new chairman would be Brad Sherman from New York. He is not in the impeach President Trump at all cost crowd. He believes impeachment would tear the country apart. He would bring proceedings only if there was overwhelming evidence. Finally there is a Democrat who shows some common sense.

  3. I would think that The Donald has the mid terms in the bag — a shut down of the govt unless he gets the wall will get the base out to vote… and I suspect that the D will not win the house.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that a wacky Alabama senate candidate and a few others are going to be the end of the R in Congress. The msm (whatever) are making it more and more likely that the conservative base is going to get out to vote.

Trump will deliver the votes…. and have more of a conservative bunch to work with…

Impeachment seems very unlikely to me.

  4. Keep the Mueller investigation going!!!
Trump’s public support keeps growing among the independents as we get exposed to more and more illegal activities under Obama’s management of the DOJ and FBI. Without the current investigation, nothing would have been exposed. There’s yet more to be exposed, before we define the word “swamp”.
