In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

Shutdown Ends; Trump Says Democrats “Have Come to Their Senses”

Democrats backed down Monday and agreed to allow the government to reopen, failing to make good on their promise to keep federal offices closed until Republicans struck a deal on DACA.

All Democrats got from the GOP was a promise of a vote on a bill to address President Trump’s recision of Barack Obama’s order protecting “dreamers” who came to the United States illegally as children. They did not get a promise that the bill would pass.

President Trump issued a defiant statement saying there will be “a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country,” pointedly refusing to make any promises:

I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses and are now willing to fund our great military, border patrol, first responders, and insurance for vulnerable children. As I have always said, once the Government is funded, my Administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration. We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country.

  1. Democrats coming to their senses? I think that is overly optimistic. They are simply regrouping to continue their push to gain reliable Democrat votes.
They care nothing for the illegal immigrants, just as they have cared nothing for the black community they claim to have such love for.
They are a bunch of lying, conniving socialists.

    1. “Coming to their senses”… More likely they were starting to realize the great term ‘Schummer Shutdown’ was sticking & the Dems were starting to get blame (which they all richly deserve)

      1. And “Crumbs” Pelosi’s celebratory dinner at that high end restaurant didn’t help either.
ps: I stole Crumbs from somewhere, but I like it.

  2. All true, of course, and most sane, reasonably informed can see it plain as day. The D’s have lost majorities in most state legislatures, State Governorships, both Houses of Congress and, of course, lost the Presidency. I hope the D’s keep up what they are doing and keep Shutdown Schumer and the addled Pelosi in leadership positions! They will be a footnote in history and our grandchildren will ask us, “What was a Democrat? It’s going to be a test question in our finals.” ;+}

  3. Three good comments.

The way I see it is the Democrats do what benefits their party. The Republicans do what is good for the country. Present day Democrats are not like Truman Democrats.

Truman said doing what is good for the country serves his party best.

    1. Speaking of the difference between D’ and R’s. here’s an interesting study. It compares conservatives with liberals on their knowledge of how our government operates, and the point the study makes is interesting:

“Survey: Just A Quarter Of Americans Can Name All 3 Branches Of Government”

      And from the study:

“While conservatives were more likely to be able to name all three branches than liberals or moderates, the overall proportion of the public that can name all three has fallen by 12 percent since 2011.”

      Interesting. Explains a lot.

  4. I see land on the horizon! We have a new sheriff in town. giddy up boys and girls.. illegals shutting down military spending/ support. Not

  5. Average age of “DACA” recipients is 24. Not children by any means. But it would be nice to get a thank you for a lifetime of free education and all this country has to offer.
