  1. Condolences to our friends in Canada, where a young, liberal, inexperienced politician just won the election largely based on bringing about “change”, taxing the rich, and “investing” in infrastructure to stimulate the sluggish economy. Sound familiar? Good luck with that.

Son of late PM Pierre Trudeau becomes Canada’s new PM

TORONTO (AP) — Canadians voted for a sharp change in their government Monday, returning a legendary name for liberals, Trudeau, to the prime minister’s office and resoundingly ending Conservative Stephen Harper’s near-decade in office.

Justin Trudeau, the son of late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, became Canada’s new prime minister after his Liberal Party won a majority of Parliament’s 338 seats. Trudeau’s Liberals had been favored to win the most seats, but few expected the final margin of victory.

Trudeau, tall and trim at 43, channels the star power — if not quite the political heft — of his father, who swept to power in 1968 on a wave of support dubbed “Trudeaumania”.

Justin Trudeau, a former school teacher and member of Parliament since 2008, becomes the second youngest prime minister in Canadian history.

Trudeau has re-energized the Liberal Party since its worst electoral defeat four years ago when they won just 34 seats and finished third behind the traditionally weaker New Democrat Party. Trudeau promises to raise taxes on the rich and run deficits for three years to boost government spending.

“We have a chance to bring real change to Canada and bring an end to the Harper decade,” Trudeau said Sunday in Harper’s adopted home province of Alberta, traditionally a Conservative stronghold.

Canada has shifted to the center-right under Harper, who has lowered sales and corporate taxes, avoided climate change legislation and clashed with the Obama administration over the Keystone XL pipeline.

The Trudeau victory will ease tensions with the U.S. Although Trudeau supports the Keystone pipeline, he argues relations should not hinge on the project. Harper has clashed with the Obama administration over other issues, including the recently reached Iran nuclear deal.

Trudeau’s opponents pilloried him as too inexperienced, but Trudeau embraced his boyish image on Election Day. Sporting jeans and a varsity letter jacket, he posed for a photo standing on the thighs of two his colleagues to make a cheerleading pyramid, his campaign plane in the backdrop with “Trudeau 2015” painted in large red letters.

Harper had said he would step down if his party didn’t win the most seats. Former colleagues of Harper said he would be personally devastated to lose to a Trudeau, the liberal legacy he entered politics to destroy. Harper’s long-term goal was to kill the widely entrenched notion that the Liberals — the party of Pierre Trudeau and Jean Chretien — are the natural party of government in Canada, and to redefine what it means to be Canadian.

Hurt when Canada entered a mild recession earlier this year, Harper made a controversy over the Islamic face veil a focus of his campaign, a decision his opponents seized on to depict him as a divisive leader.

“Canadians rejected the politics of fear and division,” New Democratic Party leader Tom Mulcair said of the Harper Conservatives.

Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, said Canadians rallied around the Liberals as the anti-Harper vote.

  2. More on the new “rock star”:

Canada’s Trudeau sweeps to victory, toppling Harper in election

MONTREAL/CALGARY (Reuters) – Canada’s Liberal leader Justin Trudeau rode a late campaign surge to a stunning election victory on Monday, toppling Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives with a promise of change and returning a touch of glamor, youth and charisma to Ottawa.

Canada’s major television networks projected a majority for the Liberals, a turn in political fortunes that smashed the record for the number of seats gained from one election to the next. The Liberals had been a distant third place party in Parliament before this election.

The projected win ends the Conservatives’ nine-year run in power and reflected a political shift away from Harper’s brand of fiscal and cultural conservatism.

Trudeau, 43, the photogenic son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, pledged to run a C$10 billion annual budget deficit for three years to invest in infrastructure and help stimulate Canada’s anemic economic growth.

This rattled financial markets in the runnup to the vote and the Canadian dollar weakened on news of his victory.

Trudeau has said he will repair Canada’s cool relations with the Obama administration, withdraw Canada from the combat mission against Islamic State militants in favor of humanitarian aid and training, and tackle climate change.

The former teacher took charge of the party just two years ago and guided it out of the political wilderness with a pledge of economic stimulus and stirring appeals for a return to social liberalism.

Born to a sitting prime minister who came to power in 1968 on a wave of popular support dubbed “Trudeaumania,” Trudeau will become the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history and brings an appeal more common in movie stars than statesmen.

Pierre once jumped from a trampoline into the crowd. With boyish good looks, Justin thrusts himself into throngs and puts his hand to his heart when listening to someone.

Selfie requests are so common he happily takes the camera and snaps the photo himself, often cheek to cheek. He is the married father of three young children.

    • That’s show biz! Obama must be celebrating tonight! He treated PM Harper like dirt.
Also, gives him an excuse to throw a huge star-studded State dinner for his LIBeral counterpart.

      • I remember his mother Margaret .I hope her son has a more steadfast character. She ran away from home, had affairs with various members of the Rolling Stones, used drugs, lived a jet-set life after the divorce etc.She now says that she has bi-polar disorder. Well, I am sorry for her, she obviously did not like the public life, but a political leader in public life must have an entirely different character. I saw some pictures of this young man and have a creepy feeling of similiarities with another president ( guess who ), there is something fake about him, another actor ???? I might be entirely wrong though. I hope so.

    • Shows that U.S. isn’t the only nation with an educational system that fails to educate it’s citizens on history and economics. Combine that with a pop culture and media landscape that promotes celebrity and “gimme, gimme, I want it NOW” philosophy and we are at a tipping point far more dangerous to our survival than a foreign army upon our shores.

  3. “Clock Boy” was at the WH tonight for “Astronomy Night”, but only had a very brief meeting with Obummer. No special treatment, apparently. And despite Barry tweeting last month that the kid should bring his “cool clock” to the WH, the kid left it home (at the direction of the Secret Service no doubt, but no one will ever admit that Barry’s suggestion was stupid):

President Obama Meets ‘Clock Kid’ Ahmed Mohamed During White House Astronomy Event

In spite of the hubbub surrounding the appearance of “clock kid” Ahmed Mohamed at the White House, President Obama didn’t make him the center of attention during an event that was squarely focused on astronomy.

The president made brief remarks at the White House’s “Astronomy Night” before peering through a telescope and visiting briefly with a few of the attendees.

“We have to encourage those glimmers of curiosity,” Obama said during his remarks which highlighted the scientific curiosities of children around the country, but he did not refer to Mohamed’s experience.

According to the White House press pool, Ahmed Mohamed was in the third row of the audience.

White House reporters confirmed on Twitter that he spoke with Obama briefly as he shook the president’s hand.

On WH South Lawn @POTUS just chatted w/Ahmed Mohamed @IStandWithAhmed. @PressSec downplayed this possibility earlier today. #astronomynight

Ahmed Mohamed — “clock boy” — meeting @POTUS at White House Astronomy Night
    8:01 PM – 19 Oct 2015

In September, President Obama invited Mohamed to the White House after hearing about his detainment by law enforcement, posting an encouraging message to the student on Twitter.

    President Obama✔ @POTUS
Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.
    12:58 PM – 16 Sep 2015

Mohamed willingly accepted the invitation to visit Obama, tweeting afterwards that he couldn’t wait to get his clock back and show it to the president.

    Ahmed Mohamed✔ @IStandWithAhmed
I can’t wait to get my clock back & take it to the #WhiteHouse to show @BarackObama the invite is an honor, looking forward to meeting you!
    4:34 PM – 22 Sep 2015

But the White House hinted on Monday that it was unlikely that Obama would personally visit with boy or look at his clock. “I don’t believe that the president will have the opportunity to meet with meet one-on-one with Ahmed Mohamed,” Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters.

In an interview with reporters this morning, Mohamed admitted that he didn’t bring his clock to Washington D.C. “because he’s been too busy traveling to pick it up from home,” according to the Dallas Morning News.

During his visit, he also attended a Council on American-Islamic Relations gala while he was in Washington D.C., according to the same report, and visited the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Since obtaining his newfound celebrity, the 14-year-old boy has been traveling the world visiting major tech groups and world leaders.

Just recently he posed for a photo with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, a known dictator accused of waging genocide in Darfur.

During his globetrotting, he also had the chance to visit Mecca with his family, as part of a Saudi government sponsored pilgrimage.

He also made an appearance on the Dr. Oz’s science fair and spent time with Google co-founder Sergey Brin at the Google Science Fair.

  4. The Liberal Party and Trudeau’s campaign have been crawling with Obama operatives since about 2013. Trudeau is a disciple of Larry Summers. Axelrod was all over the campaign. And Valerie Jarett’s daughter’s father in law is a very big deal sleaze in the Liberal Party.

You have to cut and paste this link — also click on link re. ValJar)

Obama’s operatives are international marauders. So, expect more.

  5. Trudeau has also committed to bringing in 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada and invest $250m into refugee processing.

Time to strengthen the northern border. As if!

  6. ot Chatter about Paul Ryan as speaker heats up again. Drudge notes Harry Reid supports him. As does the RepE.

Should stay where he is. Good on Ways and Means. Doesn’t want it. And he is arm in arm with Gutierrez on Immigration. Obama threatens more Immigration edicts.

I think the fix is in. FC will cave and we will get PR. Might as well have Boehner or McCarthy. But they at least wanted it.
