NBC today decided to end its relationships with Donald Trump in response to racist comments he made against Mexican immigrants, saying it will not air the Miss USA and the Miss Universe pageants, which it owns with Trump.
The company said in a statement:
At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump.
Trump’s rambling presidential announcement speech earlier this month generally smacked of xenophobia, with his obsessive focus on Mexico and China as the source of America’s problems. That’s what xenophobic demagogues do, they try to say foreigners are the cause of everything bad.
He had disgusting things to say about Mexican immigrants:
When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting.
The clear indication here is that most Mexican immigrants are of extremely bad character. I’m no supporter of illegal immigration or even unfettered legal immigration from Mexico. But most of the people who come here are decent and often very hardworking individuals desperate to make money for their families.
Trump didn’t even have the class to try to apologize for his grotesque comments, instead trying to change the subject to illegal immigration. He said today:
If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court.
This is not about NBC. It’s not about trade, and it is not even about immigration. It’s about racist comments made by Donald Trump. What a sorry thing for the GOP that he has added his moronic, hateful rants to the Republican presidential contest.
