In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

White House Dossier Shuts Down for Yom Kippur

It’s dusk in the East, and for Jews who live here, the Day of Atonement is upon us. And so, as is the custom, I will refrain from working during the holiday, which lasts until Saturday night.

The next post will most likely be the open thread that appears Sunday mornings.

Thanks for your patience as I take some time away for this most holy of Jewish holidays. And to those observing it, may you have an easy fast!

      1. Yom Kippur has come to a close (east coast of the US). Question for you swedlishlady, “What was Sweden thinking when they recognized a State of Palestine the day before Yom Kippur?” Well, for that matter any day.

        1. Sadie, when I heard about it yesterday I understood that there would be reactions on this blog. After the September election we now have a new government, a Socialist-Green coalition. On Friday the new PM gave his inauguration speech and he then said that Palestine now would be recognized by Sweden. It is simply a new policy line, Socialists have always been more friendly to Palestine than non-Socialists. I think that they imagine that this is a way to create peaceful negotiations. I guess that Sweden would like to participate there. This is a very new policy, there has already been some debate here but I don´t think that it is seen as a dramatic change.
          US reactions have been that it is “too early” but Avigdor Liebermann will protest to the Swedish Ambassador today. I believe that 112 states have recognized Palestine already , in Europe it is Bulgaria, Tjeckien, Cyprus, Malta, Poland, Romania, Hungary and Iceland. As you see, not the leading Western countries but will it change now ?

          1. Has the recognition in your opinion anything to do with the overwhelmingly large number of ME immigrants in Sweden? Just curious if Sweden has anything like CAIR over here.

  1. Tehillim 103:8-14

    The Lord is merciful and gracious,
    Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
    He will not always strive with us,
    Nor will He keep His anger forever.
    He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
    Nor punished us according to our iniquities.

    For as the heavens are high above the earth,
    So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
    As far as the east is from the west,
    So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
    As a father pities his children,
    So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
    For He knows our frame;
    He remembers that we are dust.

    May G-d recognize and remember you and your family in His book, Mr. Koffler. Be blessed.

  2. Allow me to say something that reflects the most sincere admiration for all of you who follow your own religion’s customs, requirements, and holy days.

    To all who will be honoring this day, I salute you.

  3. How did it all start? Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning GOD! Call me and others simple minded, but holy writ does not say, in the beginning man, or evolution, or congress, or good luck…
    Love the Lord thy God with all your heart, mind, and soul. May our spirits mesh with and engage with, the Holy Spirit…

  4. Keith,

    Happy New Year and Welcome Back! It is nice to see people live their religion.

    I live in Georgia and we just lost a great Georgian and American S.Truett Kathy a month ago at the age of 93. He was the Founder/Owner of Chic Fil A Restaurants that started in Atlanta. His entire chain of restaurants are closed on Sunday to allow his employees to have day with their family and allow them to attend church services. Something unheard in the fast food industry.
    We can all learn from Yom Kippur. Atoning for our sins against another is not just confessing them but seeking out the individual and reconciling the sin with them. Not easy to do but the right thing.
