President Obama suggested Friday that Americans have grown overly concerned about the terrorism and Islamist extremism, tracing their misplaced worry to the increased information about overseas developments parlayed by social media.
From the pool report of a DNC fundraiser in Purchase, New York:
“If you watch the nightly news, it feels like the world is falling apart,” Obama said. He said this is a time of extraordinary changes around the world. He cited several hotspots, saying, “We’ve seen the barbarity of an organization like ISIL.”
Obama said we have seen failed economies in that region, so some young people who are lacking options are attracted to organizations like ISIL . . .
“I can see why a lot of folks are troubled,” he said. But American military superiority has never been greater, Obama said.
“The world’s always been messy … we’re just noticing now in part because of social media,” he said.
People say China is advancing, but if you look at our cards and at China’s cards, you’d rather have our cards, Obama said.
The Middle East is challenging, “but it’s been challenging for quite a while,” he said.
“We will get through these challenging times just like we have in the past,” he said. This is not comparable to the challenges we faced during the Cold War, he said.
So this is how he can engage in constant golf with equanimity. Nothing’s wrong with the world! We’re all just spending too much time on Twitter, or Facebook, or Pinterest, or whatever.
Those silly Brits, raising their threat level. They need to get off YouTube and read book!
