A leading Latino lawmaker this morning said he would be “negotiating” at the White House over ways President Obama can take unilateral action on immigration, seeming to indicate that he thinks the president can remove from legal jeopardy up to 5 million of the 11 or 12 million immigrants thought to be here illegally.
Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said on MSNBC:
In about an hour, I’m going over to the White House. I’ll be meeting with Jeh Johnson and the chief legal counsel to the president of the United States. We’re going to sit down and we’re gonna negotiate other terms and avenues the president can use in prosecutorial discretion. and I think we can get maybe three or four, even five million people.
It’s not clear what the result of the meeting was.
