In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

Obama Expresses Frustration with U.S. “Society”

Uh oh. We’re getting beyond Republicans and Tea Partiers. Now President Obama is mad at U.S. society.

Not as in “high society.” As in all of us.

The president said today that the failure of America – not Congress, not Republicans, but America – to get behind gun control measures he supports “makes no sense,” and that United States is a kind of gun-loving misfit among “advanced, developed” societies.

The nation, he says, has some “soul searching” to do and should be “ashamed.”

From a question and answer session he held at the White House today via Tumblr.:

My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage.

We’re the only developed country on Earth where this happens.  And it happens now once a week.  And it’s a one-day story.  There’s no place else like this.  A couple of decades ago, Australia had a mass shooting similar to Columbine or Newtown.  And Australia just said, well, that’s it — we’re not seeing that again.  And basically imposed very severe, tough gun laws.  And they haven’t had a mass shooting since.

Our levels of gun violence are off the charts.  There’s no advanced, developed country on Earth that would put up with this.

Now, we have a different tradition.  We have a Second Amendment.  We have historically respected gun rights.  I respect gun rights.

But the idea that, for example, we couldn’t even get a background check bill in to make sure that if you’re going to buy a weapon you have to actually go through a fairly rigorous process so that we know who you are, so you can’t just walk up to a store and buy a semiautomatic weapon — it makes no sense.

And until that changes, until there is a fundamental shift in public opinion in which people say, enough, this is not acceptable, this is not normal, this isn’t sort of the price we should be paying for our freedom, that we can have respect for the Second Amendment and responsible gun owners and sportsmen and hunters can have the ability to possess weapons but that we are going to put some commonsense rules in place that make a dent, at least, in what’s happening — until that is not just the majority of you — because that’s already the majority of you, even the majority of gun owners believe that.

But until that’s a view that people feel passionately about and are willing to go after folks who don’t vote reflecting those values, until that happens, sadly, not that much is going to change.

So the country has to do some soul searching about this.  This is becoming the norm, and we take it for granted in ways that, as a parent, are terrifying to me.

And I am prepared to work with anybody, including responsible sportsmen and gun owners, to craft some solutions.  But right now, it’s not even possible to get even the mildest restrictions through Congress, and we should be ashamed of that.

So please search your souls and get back to him.

    1. Beat me to it, but isn’t this the greatest news? I’m sure when the exit polls are released, they will prove that amnesty was the issue that did him in.

      1. Amnesty was the issue. Dave Brat, economist professor, too!

My hope is that every RINO in DC develops a migraine of epic proportions!

      1. Wow!! All of a sudden I think we will see some people “evolving” on the amnesty issue. This is huge for America,IMO!!

        1. I think there were too many running against him. The conservatives needed to rally around one figure with the best chance.

          1. Julie, that also has to be the case come 2016. Whether it’s Rand Paul, or Ted Cruz or Rick Perry or another conservative, they need to rally around 1 person if possible to defeat the Establishment or the moderates.

    2. Oh, bite us MrPresident.
Until or unless the many states amend our sacred constitution, we’ll keep our arms.
If you don’t like it here, don’t approve of the American people, then, please, take AF1 out of DC in any direction and find that utopia that you think is out there.

      1. Usually I wouldn’t say this, but I think the voters in VA’s 7ith District have voted what’s on Americans’ minds all across the country.

        1. well here’s my worry: are we throwing electable Republicans out of office who will then lose the general election? Repubs have a chance to take back the Senate…I really hope we don’t screw up in the House. all I want is for the democrats to not be able to wreck the country any further. just sayin’.

          am I being too cautious?

          1. Do you know if there’s any truth to the rumor that Democrats conspired to vote for Brat (open primary) in order to oust Cantor?

    1. 161 homicides in Chicago this year so far
      134 by gunshot
of those: 104 of the victims are identified as Black.
      of those: 13 were women.

  1. Okay, soul searching done. Can I get up from my time out now? Sorry, but no head-hanging here.

Dear Mr. President, keep your mitts off of our guns. Oh, and please stop hoarding our ammo. Thanks.

    1. Thank you for mentioning the hoarding. They are storing billions of (that). No one discusses that.
      Why are they hoarding (that)?

  2. Oh sure let’s get rid of all the guns, then we’ll be safe. But then we’ll have to get rid of all the knives too, because you can see in China how getting rid of the guns worked for them, they just switched to knives. When will people realize it’s not the gun owners that is the problem it is how we treat (or don’t treat) the mentally ill or people just struggling with depression and other issues.

  3. Significant repudiation of Republican immigration reform. Says Laura Ingraham who was active in Brat’s campaign as was Glenn Beck and Mark Levin. Jenny Martin, Tea Party maven, wouldn’t even answer his calls.

So, not necessarily a tea party win, but an establishment defeat. And a big one!

    1. What I found most amazing was that Cantor raised $5.5 million and spent $5 million of it. Brat, OTOH, raised just over $200,000 and spent just over half of it.

      1. I heard that too. Amazing. The interview I saw — he focused on free market and states rights, rule of law and constitution and conservatism — well he didn’t say that exactly. But — no big government. And then there is immigration which I think will be part of any race.

      2. I agree. There’s an amazing message in all that for Rove and other parasites who parade themselves as “campaign advisors.” They won’t “hear” it, probably, because they are part of the problem, and not part of thesolution.

  4. Yep, Barack I am ashamed. But not of America . Ashamed of you.

And the parent card again. This from a guy who spends all his free family time on the golf course.

But pretty sure all the tumblrites ate it up.

  5. hmmmm…this from the “President” that let 5 of the most dangerous men in the world loose a few days ago? Is he ASHAMED? the only searching Obama will be doing is to ruin our country

      1. I read somewhere tonight that Hagel “inadvertently” let them go. That certainly hasn’t been the WH’s defense from day one. That’s almost as big a whopper as Hillary Clinton’s poor little me remarks.

  6. oh no! we’ve disappointed Obama again. Rasmussen should be tracking the president’s approval of us rather than the other way around!

  7. And American “society” as in every day Americans doing what Americans have done for over 200 years are more than “frustrated” with you Mr. Obama, we are done with you.
You can accept the last two years of your lame duck Presidency and play golf and take your vacations or you can push the limits until your pen pushes the detonation button and you find your impeached ass out on the street.
The choice is yours, but the power is ours.
    The American People.

  8. Well, for a guy who became POTUS while holding a phony Social Security number, I would think Obama would show more gratitude to the “society” that let him get away with it. Ya just can’t please some “folks”.

  9. The Obamas obviously don’t like America so why do they stay here? Why don’t they move to their perfect little unicorn utopia and leave us alone?

    1. Exactly. There are plenty of countries who rule and live by the Socialist, big government controls everything ideology Obama loves so why does he, and all others like him who hate everything about America stay here?

P.S. When is Alec Baldwin going to leave the country? He said he would if Bush was elected but he is still here.

  10. We need to be “soul searching” to work up the political will, as a nation, to throw this tyrant out of office and try him for crimes against America.

  11. My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep VOTESout of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage.

    1. You need a license to drive a car, get married, open a business. But just any idiot can vote, & look what they’ve gone & done. I know we have come far on civil rights issues, there have been some unintended consequences . . .

  12. Astounding arrogance. First he screws up the country in the most royal way with ObamaCare, taxation, unbridled illegal immigration, and just plain assholery; all the while making frenemies with people who are trying to kill us, and dissing our decades long allies.
Now he is blaming us, the American people, for his piss poor performance and just plain assholery.
I wonder, does that include the people who voted for him and still like him, or is just the rest of us poor slobs who have been unfortunate enough to have to put up with him for the past 6 years?

    1. assholery, I love it! Thanks. Every day this assholery do-nothing piece of you know what, complains about America. This boring jerk should get booted out! Why not, because he’s part black? You know what? what goes around comes around and it can’t come soon enough for this miserable depressing creep of all creeps.

  13. Notice his comment: Go after folks who don’t vote reflecting their values. “Go after”
Than his comment as well: prepared to work with.
What does he mean by work with? What does he have up his sleeve?

  14. He is ashamed of America?????????????????
He let 5 MAJOR TERRORIST GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus the LONG LIST of scandels, etc. causes A BIG MESS.

  15. I’ve been writing on blogs since 2009 that Obama was the “Worst President Ever.” My suspicions about the man go all the way back to 2006 and have been true to this day. He is a vindictive, hateful man with psychological issues that any psychiatrist looking at his make-up absent the name and title will tell you should never be in a position of power. So here we are; 2.5 years left of Obama and if people think this is as low as the U.S can go under Obama you have no idea.

  17. Question, in reference to the Autralian killing, is he talking about the nursing home fire in 2001, killing 10 people. Maybe the Churchill fire in 2009, again killing 10. The last major one was in 2002, Monash University where a gun was used.

Maybe we should start regulating fires as well as guns. They see to be just as deadly.

  19. Heroine is illegal and folks seem to be able to buy it, use it and kill themselves with it. I think it works the same way with weapons. And it is very unfortunate, however like heroine it is a fact of life. Like it or not. The responsible majority should not pay the price in additional regulations or whatever is invented for the minority of irresponsibles. Killings, drug & alcohol abuse, abortion, smoking, obesity, etc. are all examples of the human’s disregard for, what many of us think is precious, life. How does one fix another’s disregard?

  20. He is guarded by people who are packing. So this is for us–not him. And you can’t walk into a store and walk out with an automatic weapon. Why bother to counter this–this is his usual meaningless patter–Americans are violent and stupid, the Constitution is sort of guidelines not law, on and on. We have heard it all before.

  21. What is shameful is the fact too many Americans keep voting for people who intend to destroy our Constitutional rights and create a tyrannical dictatorship which Obama seems to be succeeding in doing.

What is shameful is we have a president who has never had a real job, never served in the military, and is clearly supportive of our enemies and doing everything he can do destroy what little morality and ethics are left in the establishment of any public policy or law.

  22. Mr. Obama please explained what you mean by advanced societies: Does it mean: Superior Technology, Human kindness, Excessive toleration on the part of Government, Is highly educated, its legal systems is most humane, does not spread false science like Global Warming, really helps the poor, does not spy on its citizens, does not hate its military, where politicians are truthful, where banks don’t determine the means to human destiny, where Government Bureaucracies don’t tell humans how to live.

  23. He’s telegraphing his punch here. He is literally salivating over the next mass casualty school shooting, so he can put that pen of his to work. Things will get mighty interesting after that.

  24. So why does Obama use drones to kill — drones better than guns? He’s high and mighty, but in truth, he’s a murderer also, and all those gun scandals with Holder and Hillary Clinton, giving guns to Mexicans and guns to rebels, etc., he should be ashamed, ashamed of himself.

  25. Great!! FLOTUS probably wanted to see Palm Springs! Know 0 has been there for boys week end. And his love of golf (bad as he is) he can’t play all the many courses in one weekend. And she can shop at all the high end places. Good they are popping by to visit the Indian children first.
