Michelle Obama today sent out an email making clear that NOTHING’S SACRED anymore, using the Thanksgiving holiday to raise money for President Obama’s political arm, Organizing for Action.
Titled “From out family to yours,” the missive states:

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a time for Americans to pause and reflect on the gifts that G-d has provided over the past year.
At sunset tonight begins the Jewish Festival of Lights, or Chanukah. For those who are not familiar with the story of Chanukah, here is a condensed version from Judaism 101 (http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday7.htm)
The story of Chanukkah begins in the reign of Alexander the Great. Alexander conquered Syria, Egypt and Palestine, but allowed the lands under his control to continue observing their own religions and retain a certain degree of autonomy. Under this relatively benevolent rule, many Jews assimilated much of Hellenistic culture, adopting the language, the customs and the dress of the Greeks, in much the same way that Jews in America today blend into the secular American society.
More than a century later, a successor of Alexander, Antiochus IV was in control of the region. He began to oppress the Jews severely, placing a Hellenistic priest in the Temple, massacring Jews, prohibiting the practice of the Jewish religion, and desecrating the Temple by requiring the sacrifice of pigs (a non-kosher animal) on the altar. Two groups opposed Antiochus: a basically nationalistic group led by Mattathias the Hasmonean and his son Judah Maccabee, and a religious traditionalist group known as the Chasidim, the forerunners of the Pharisees (no direct connection to the modern movement known as Chasidism). They joined forces in a revolt against both the assimilation of the Hellenistic Jews and oppression by the Seleucid Greek government. The revolution succeeded and the Temple was rededicated.
According to tradition as recorded in the Talmud, at the time of the rededication, there was very little oil left that had not been defiled by the Greeks. Oil was needed for the menorah (candelabrum) in the Temple, which was supposed to burn throughout the night every night. There was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight day festival was declared to commemorate this miracle. Note that the holiday commemorates the miracle of the oil, not the military victory: Jews do not glorify war.
So, with the tradition of Thanksgiving and the celebration of Chanukah both falling together, I would ask my fellow WHDers one simple question. Do we stand as Judah Maccabee, and begin the long fight against the pagans that have desecrated the White House and Congress? Or do we simply simply go shopping on Black Friday, and hope that others will pick up the hammer, and tear down the walls.

I can’t believe some of the ROE imposed on our troops. There was another report on Weasel Zippers this morning about the ROE – a helicopter in Afghanistan was shot down and our troops weren’t allowed to return fire.

When I lived on the Oregon coast, there was one anonymous person in town who bought a Thanksgiving turkey for every family if they couldn’t afford one. I just put this up because I am so disgusted by Michelle Obama asking us to turn our money over to her and her grifter husband, and I wanted to remind myself that there are people who truly give from themselves without recognition. What a contrast.
Also, in the New Testament there are words for people who have to advertise themselves–MO doesn’t even fit in this category because she is asking, not giving. And I’m sure there are examples in the Hebrew Bible. I remember Keith’s wonderful post on the lesson he learned in Hebrew school about doing good in secret.

I cancelled my Ladies’ Home Journal the very first time they put her on the cover. As I recall, it was the first time they had put a person on the cover. Glad I am not missing anything. I cancelled my subscription to Southern Living this week. I have had that subscription for 23 years, since I first got married. They had an article in the November issue on how the “Affordable Care Act” will be wonderful for so many. I couldn’t believe it. I refuse to support these magazines with my money any more. I know, they don’t care, but it made me feel a little better.

Did you see the whole film on bringing up O-care at dinner? It was some “wit’s” idea of what a young many would fantasize about how bad the news would be from his parents.
