First Lady Michelle Obama has almost completely disappeared from view since the shutdown began October 1, holding not a single public event and canceling scheduled appearances in California.
It’s not clear exactly why she’s not even materializing at the White House, though one likely explanation is that at least a portion of her staff has been furloughed.
What’s more, the White House probably doesn’t want to be seen as staging unnecessary events at a cost to taxpayers as President Obama wages a public relations war with Republicans over the shutdown. Michelle has a reputation for being loose with taxpayer money, at least when it comes to travel.
Nevertheless, it’s odd that she isn’t even holding some kind of small public event at the White House. The first lady isn’t even tending to her own vegetable garden, which is rotting away and being overtaken by weeds. She’s hosted a couple of official private meetings, but that’s been it.
Michelle’s last public appearances were in New York City September 23 and 24, when she listened in to Obama’s remarks at the UN and hosted a couple of events.
Mrs. Obama has two pet causes which she frequently seeks to boost, her “Joining Forces” initiative on behalf of military families and the “Let’s Move” program to encourage kids to eat healthy and exercise. She hasn’t been promoting either in the last few weeks.
What’s more, she nixed a fundraising trip to California scheduled for this past weekend, even though travel costs would have been paid by the Democratic National Committee and the political arm of Congressional Democrats. Taxpayers still would have footed the bill for staff and other logistics, though, including Secret Service protection.
And she might not be out of hiding anytime soon. There are no upcoming events on the first lady’s public schedule.

Honestly, that’s fine with me. The less we have to see of her phony “causes” the better. And they are phony, if she really believed in helping the military families, she would have been all over those unpaid death benefits. Shame on her.

Well, let’s see; her drink more water campaign was ridiculed by almost everyone, she really doesn’t give a fat rat’s patootey about military families, the b*tch from Brazil sent regrets to an invite for a fancy StateDinner, and ungrateful schoolchildren, and their parents, think her FatKidsBehinds lunch program is cruel and tasteless.
No monthly or weekly publication has named her “best” anything for years, there’s no posh vacation planned because of the cheap Repub’s attitude toward government spending, and Beyonce was on a world tour, not anywhere in the US.
The Post Office issued stamps that co-opted her “let’s move” program without her input or at least giving her a cool photo-op when they were announced. She was forced to complain that the child depicted on one stamp cannon-balling into a pool wasn’t wearing a helmet, knee pads and a floatation device, just to let everyone know that she’s in charge.
Then there’s that mess with Assad and Putin, Obamacare is a bust, why, there’s just so much a woman can stand without hitting the tea trolley every day.
Sooooo, there it is, life in the WhiteHouse is not fun anymore.

YEEF! You know, when I was a medic, I once had a conversation with a fellow from the morgue after cleaing up a particuarly nasty motorcycle accident where the victim was strewn across 1/4 mile of highway by the truck and 5 cars that hit him, dragging him not only to his death but into convenient, fist-sized chunks, some of which were handily packaged in the remnants of clothing and boots. I got to help pick it up. Anyway, this individual called in the wee smalls after we had collected the larger portions of this unfortunate individual (and were still beating the bushes for more) and sent them to him, to inform us “There’s still more of him out there”. This means that he spend hours putting this fleshy, rough-hewn jigsaw puzzle together while we searched.
I once thought THAT was the worst job I ever heard of…
… until I met a man in forensic insect analysis that plucks bugs from the decomposing corpses of murder victims who were left outdoors, to determine from their type and gestational development where and when the individual actually met their demise. Then, I thought THAT a pretty awful job…

For some reason, the untended garden hacks me off to no end. This is a waste of our money because the food was eaten at state dinners and other dinners.

I disagree that much of anything from that garden was served at State Dinners. The invitees are in the 500+ range, and unless a single leaf was placed on each salad, they lied about the garden’s bounty.
The photo ops of MrsO liberating huge vegetables from the soil were staged with produce provided by local farmers or farmer’s markets. People familiar with the growing season in the DC area were laughing at one photo op where she was seen “harvesting” something that couldn’t possible be grown at that time.
Nothing about these Obamas is real, nothing. It’s all smoke and mirrors, secrets buried so deep they’re hidden forever, and a willing and complicit Press that refuses to say anything that would tarnish ‘their’ president.

Your jaw will drop when you find out they hired a professional organic farmer to oversee everything and most veggies are grown in a hot-house elsewhere.
My head’s about to explode. SOMEONE needs to get out there and tend to that food. This is food, not some memos lying in IN/OUT trays on a bureaucrat’s desk.
I consider this the same as my then-five-year-old son’s using oranges as baseballs. He got a whack on the butt and a good talking-to about how we don’t waste food.

Just a bit curious……what time does the President begin his day? I have often noticed that when you post his schedule it is always well after 9:00 am or later. I remember President Bush receiving his briefings much earlier in the morning.
She needs to get down to that garden and do some weeding. There’s no one tending to it. If that garden dies, what on earth will they have left to eat?

Idea for the First Lady:
Invite Martha’s Table or another local organization that feeds the hungry to a pick-your-own festival at the vegetable garden Better yet, roll up your sleeves, get some canning jars out, and put up some preserves for the winter.
