At least twelve people died today in an attack on a U.S. military installation. We don’t yet know if it was terrorism. It could be an attack on our country.
But this is not a time for unity. Not at the White House, that is, where President Obama, after paying brief homage to the victims, began laying into Republicans with vitriol, scare tactics, and sarcasm
The problem is at the moment, Republicans in Congress don’t seem to be focused on how to grow the economy and build the middle class. I say “at the moment” because I’m still hoping that a light bulb goes off here. (Laughter.)
So far, their budget ideas revolve primarily around even deeper cuts to education, even deeper cuts that would gut America’s scientific research and development, even deeper cuts to America’s infrastructure investment — our roads, our bridges, our schools, our energy grid. These aren’t the policies that would grow the economy faster. They’re not the policies that would help grow the middle class. In fact, they’d do the opposite.
I cannot remember a time when one faction of one party promises economic chaos if it can’t get 100 percent of what it wants. That’s never happened before. But that’s what’s happening right now.
You have some Republicans in the House of Representatives who are promising to shut down the government at the end of this month if they can’t shut down the Affordable Care Act. And if that scheme doesn’t work, some have suggested they won’t pay the very bills that Congress has already run up, which would cause America to default on its debt for the first time in our history and would create massive economic turmoil. Interest rates on ordinary people would shoot up.
The last time the same crew threatened this course of action back in 2011 even the mere suggestion of default slowed our economic growth. Everybody here remembers that. It wasn’t that long ago.
You get the idea. Maybe he could have taken a day off today. There was even a hint that he is ready to use the incident to drum up usual gun control rhetoric.
We are confronting yet another mass shooting — and today, it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital.
Just another mass shooting, right? Happens to be on a military installation. But how does he know this isn’t an attack? He’s probably wishing it away, because if this is terrorism, in the wake of Boston and Benghazi, the bad guys are really starting to get through.

Bill Clinton had Newt Gingrich and the Republicans and they got a lot of work done. Trouble is, the House is not pushing back as hard as they should on this poser preezy who rode into our lives on a unicorn. Obama makes me wax nostaligic for Bill, Jimmy … and even Nixon ! At least they loved their country.
But even for all his personal sleaze, Bill Clinton still at least was smart enough to know that a legacy of a balanced budgets using Republican principles was better than a legacy of demagoguery with nothing to show but debt and despair.

I am not a professional economist, but according to my calculator, half of 458 is 229, not 744. It is easier to cut the deficit in half if you triple it first. The 2014 deficit will still be 62% higher than the 2008 deficit.

Since when does this administration show any awareness of the PR optics, or what is appropriate behaviour? Most reports on MrObama’s impassioned speech about the importance of lobbing missiles on Syria noted that right after he was done he grabbed his golf bag then headed off to the golf course. A few of his most impassioned supporters are concerned and confused by his behaviour and said so in public. To the rest of us who are not blinded by partisan feelings, we have always questioned MrObama’s strange behaviour and speeches.
MrObama’s rude, inflammatory speech about his opposition thankfully will be mostly ignored.
In honor and respect for those wounded and killed in this attack at the Navy facility, the WhiteHouse’s Latino party should be cancelled, or at least postponed.
The Sec of the Navy (name?) showed the kind of respect and concern for those injured and for the loved ones of those killed at his brief press conference this afternoon that one would expect from the C in C of all the military.

Like Chicago, DC has some of the toughest gun control laws on the books. The Navy Yard Killer broke the law as soon as he drove into DC armed.

it is not apparent that Obama has any particular affection for his own country. I may be wrong, but I would bet that the pre-political Obama never took his kids to a 4th of July parade, or out to the country to chop down a Christmas tree. (in fact, I have trouble seeing Obama with an ax at all!)

I don’t see why anyone rates Obama as a “great communicator.” Communicators have strong messages and they convey them in such a way that people hear and grasp the message. Obama simply harps on the same few talking points speech after speech, year after year. It’s really tiresome.

In their shock and disbelief that such a nice guy would do such a thing they mention he went off to Thailand for a 6 month period while he was working there. Since when can a restaurant worker afford a 6 month vacation in Thailand? Something doesn’t smell right here…

My misunderstanding. The reporters mentioned about 6 months ago Aaron Alexis spent more than a month in Thailand. Still questionable how he was able to swing a month long vacation in Thailand on a restaurant employee’s salary.

Suspected U.S. shooter had ‘secret’ clearance, employer says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Aaron Alexis, the 34-year-old suspect in Monday’s shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard, had “secret” clearance and was assigned to start working there as a civilian contractor with a military-issued ID card, his firm’s chief executive told Reuters.
“He did have a secret clearance. And he did have a CAC (common access card),” said Thomas Hoshko, CEO of The Experts Inc, which was helping service the Navy Marine Corps Intranet as a subcontractor for HP Enterprise Services, part of Hewlett-Packard Co.
Alexis, of Forth Worth, Texas, is suspected of opening fire at the Naval Sea Systems Command building in the Washington Navy Yard in a shooting that left 13 people dead, including the shooter.
Asked when Alexis was supposed to start work, Hoshko said in a telephone interview: “That’s what I got to find out, if he was supposed to start today … It’s not clear to me.”
Hoshko said he was unaware of any issues with misconduct involving Alexis or any possible grievance that could have led to the shooting.
Alexis had previously worked for The Experts in Japan from September 2012 to January 2013, he said.
“We had just recently re-hired him. Another background investigation was re-run and cleared through the defense security service in July 2013,” Hoshko said.
Hoshko said he believed that Alexis’ “secret” security clearance dated back to 2007.
The Navy said Alexis enlisted as a full-time Navy reservist in May 2007. He was discharged in 2011 after a series of misconduct issues, a Navy official said.

Our Partisan Pres is simply focused on baiting the GOP to shut down the government in the vain hope that it will swing the tide in 2014, the Dem super majority will be reestablished in both House and Senate and Obama can impose: (i) wealth redistribution through seizure of 401k balances and even larger taxes on capital and investment; (ii) the most restrictive gun control ever contemplated; (iii) the continuing politicization of the various agencies of government as tools of the left/Dems; (iv) “open borders” and complete amnesty to boost the Dem voting rolls so as to ensure a permanent super majority; and (v) the final push to create the federal data hub for O’Care to ensure the feds run our lives from crib to grave. Look at what California is doing through their Democrat super majority there – it is a liberal fantasy camp – they are passing everything they can conceive, even transgender bathroom facilities for children in public schools. This is a glimpse of what Obama/Pelosi/Reid will do if they can replicate a super majority for Obama’s last two years. They do not care about accomodating those who disagree – only steam rolling them and labelling them as candidates for “reeducation camps”.
