DOJ Seized Associated Press Telephone Records

Maybe now the MSM will finally decide the Obama administration is worth investigating.

From the Associated Press itself:

The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative’s top executive called a “massive and unprecedented intrusion” into how news organizations gather the news.

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, for general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and for the main number for the AP in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP. It was not clear if the records also included incoming calls or the duration of the calls.

In all, the government seized the records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012 . . .

The government would not say why it sought the records. Officials have previously said in public testimony that the U.S. attorney in Washington is conducting a criminal investigation into who may have provided information contained in a May 7, 2012, AP story about a foiled terror plot. The story disclosed details of a CIA operation in Yemen that stopped an al-Qaida plot in the spring of 2012 to detonate a bomb on an airplane bound for the United States.

The White House says it don’t know nothin’ about it. From a statement by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney:

Other than press reports, we have no knowledge of any attempt by the Justice Department to seek phone records of the AP.  We are not involved in decisions made in connection with criminal investigations, as those matters are handled independently by the Justice Department.  Any questions about an ongoing criminal investigation should be directed to the Department of Justice.

Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, a former trial attorney, told Politico the DOJ’s seizure “sounds like a dragnet to intimidate the media” instead of a criminal investigation.

“What is stunning is the breadth of the seizure!” Van Susteren said. “If you read the AP President’s letter to DOJ, and if his letter is accurate, the seizure was very broad: 2 months of telephone records involving many who work at AP!

This administration routinely attempts to intimidate the media. It has never had any respect for freedom of the press. Washington reporters, including those with the Associated Press, know that and yet carry on quietly as if nothing is wrong.

Now, to use a scientific term, it’s finally biting them in the ass.

“And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.” – Daniel 11:45

      “Him” here refers to this king. See if this guy doesn’t sound familiar;

“And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.” – Daniel 11:36-37

Obama’s a character of Biblical proportions. This isn’t necessarily a good thing. So was Satan…

  1. Believe it when I see it. Two of the major network heads have siblings within the Obama administration.
Most people do not believe what is happening to others will ever happen to them — until it does — then it is usually too late.
These are things that are just now being revealed — imagine all the other dirt heaped under the rug.

  2. And what a big ass it is. I can’t help but wonder if this is what we are finding out now (which doesn’t surprise many to your site Keith) what else don’t we know? Call me a cynic. As skillful at politics and obfuscation as they are, what are they distracting us from now?

    1. Benghazi, don’t you think? And who knows, maybe when Obama had his secret WH meeting with his most sycophantic media pals last week, this little diversion was arranged. I can easily surmise that the AP was one of the invited. How’s that for cynicism?

      1. Julie – you hit the target dead centre. This and the IRS story are nothing but a smoke screen and diversion from Benghazi

      2. I wonder. There is quite a bit going on which might be one of those alinsky…overwhelm tactics. Anyway, Benghazi might be incompetence and certainly is a horrible outcome. But isn’t coordinating gvmt with a political campaign illegal?

  3. I can honestly say that this is the only time I have wanted to listen to Piers Morgan’s opinion on a subject, since he was in the middle of his own wire-tapping scandal that ended up in the Leveson inquiry.

  4. This is absolutely stunning news.
Thank goodness the President didn’t have any knowlege or any input into that unconstitutional decision to
    /sarc/
I can’t go on, this is way too funny. Schandenfreude comes to mind.

    1. and here’s another footnote. The DOJ attorney who sent out the letter notifying AP of the records subpoena is none other than Ronald Machen, the same public servant who IGNORED a righteous Congressional resolution to hold Eric Holder in criminal contempt for stonewalling “Fast and Furious” documents.

      Selective enforcement, anyone?

    2. Note – BO NEVER has any knowledge of anything happening in his cabinet …. somewhere in the background I here Sgt Schultz echoing.. I knowwwww nothing…. It’s amazing, why do we need heads of cabinet posts?? SOS.. DOJ, DHS.. all you hear is, it was a lower under secretary who gave the order.. A senior field officer let those illegal aliens go, the janitor at the WH answered the phone the night Benghazi burned… blah blah blah. These underlings seem to be running the show. I love the IRS one – it was a rogue group in some city, it was Santa at the North Pole, etc.

So much is flying around now.. going to need a scorecard to keep track. Keep that popcorn coming!

    3. “Thank goodness the President didn’t have any knowlege or any input into that unconstitutional decision to…” -srdem65

This is actually the PERFECT place to stop! With THIS administration, it’s a “Fill-In-The-Blank” on ALL their Constitutional violations and the subsequent “Plausible Deniability”. Either this man’s a liar or the WORST manager EVER.

Even if his denials were actually true, this means that he’s SUCH a poor administrator that his underlings can run roughshod over the laws of the land without even any reporting to, or oversight from, their own boss. This would be dereliction of duty were it in the military.

The Captain of a ship is ALWAYS responsible for the conduct of the crew that is under his command. Why should this be ANY different if the “ship” in question is the Ship of State?

      1. Maybe he really DOESN’T know anything.
Maybe he is so incompetent that they keep him in the dark.
Voting ‘present’ over 100 times could be due to the fact that he cannot make a decision.

    1. That’s just it. They aren’t able to and it was planned that way. The IRS, btw, has been known about for quite some time so why all of a sudden has it been ratcheted up? Watching the news programs on FOX tonight, I also noticed how the pols are saying BOTH parties are upset. Maybe, but for different reasons: the Dems know it is a good distraction from Benghazi. Let’s have a special select committee on the IRS, and, oh btw, that doesn’t leave enough money for a special select committee on Benghazi.

        1. The same Republican-controlled house that had no problem with DHS buying up billions of bullets? The same house that sought to diminish The Tea Party, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann. We don’t have a two-party system anymore. We have two defined “cartels” vying for power and neither of which includes the electorate’s needs, wants or wishes.

          1. Absolutely right, Sadie!

It looks pretty hypocritical to chastise the other side when your hand is stuck in the cookie jar too. The only difference between the majority of them up there in DC is the letter behind their name. The majority are engaging, or have engaged, in extracurricular activities that benefit them while putting the screws to the American people.

Don’t point the finger at the other side, because when the digging starts they are going to get caught too. Pathetic.

          2. This is it, Sadie. Our system of government is so bloated and so corrupted by crony capitalism, that the politicians we send to Washington spend most of their time campaigning and passing legislation for their lobbyist donors than they do working for We the People.

The majority of the House Republicans (146 at last count) are backing Rep. Wolf’s H.Res. 36 to appoint a select committee to investigate Benghazi, yet Boehner won’t budge. That tells me he has no fealty to the people – he’s a protector of the leviathan.

  5. Now if it were the White House Dossier, I’d be upset. But who knows
the shenanigans on which the AP has worked hand in glove with the Obama administration.Cincycinco, time to bring up the Bob Dylan song, “How does it feel?”

  7. More distractions from the murders in Benghazi by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I still say Obama thinks he’s living out the intrigue of a White House movie or novel by all this spying, lieing, etc. What does he care, he doesn’t have to run again (thats him thinking). He will do all he can to undermine America. Any other president would have been impeached by now. He knows the Republicans are afraid of him and he will continue on his merry way.

  8. Did these fool’s actually believe they were immune from Obama’s wrath?
Didn’t anyone teach them that in a dictatorship, a free press is one of the first victims?
Here’s a clue MSM, when you’re put against a wall, you’ve outlived your usefulness.
