In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

Canada Strikes Back

Did the White House really expect the Canadians to wait around while we do more feasibility studies on the Keystone XL pipeline? We’ve had three years already.

Looks like China will get to increase its energy security, not the United States, and the jobs constructing the pipeline may stay in Canada. From a report by Bloomberg.

President Barack Obama’s decision yesterday to reject a permit for TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL oil pipeline may prompt Canada to turn to China for oil exports.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in a telephone call yesterday, told Obama “Canada will continue to work to diversify its energy exports,” according to details provided by Harper’s office. Canadian Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver said relying less on the U.S. would help strengthen the country’s “financial security.”

The “decision by the Obama administration underlines the importance of diversifying and expanding our markets, including the growing Asian market,” Oliver told reporters in Ottawa.

Currently, 99 percent of Canada’s crude exports go to the U.S., a figure that Harper wants to reduce in his bid to make Canada a “superpower” in global energy markets.

Harper “expressed his profound disappointment with the news,” according to the statement, which added that Obama told Harper the rejection was not based on the project’s merit and that the company is free to re-apply.

Canada this month began hearings on a proposed pipeline by Enbridge Inc. to move crude from Alberta’s oil sands to British Columbia’s coast, where it could be shipped to Asian markets.

  1. This one decision for purely political reasons will have such devestating long term consequences to us. He is an idiot. I hope the unions will finally see him for what he really is.

    1. Don’t count on it. The unions put him where he is.
These days, it looks as if every single large group of people, from Academic Graduate Assistants to Child Care Providers is a target for union organization. And as I’ve noted before, the Military is probably within that target group.

  2. During World War Two there was concern that German submarines would disrupt shipping oil from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Coast. Our leaders decided to build a natural gas pipeline from South Texas to New York. It was built in less than one year.

Suppose something interrupts current shipments. Wouldn’t it be laughable if the US went to Canada and ask them to increase supply and Canada would reply…sorry we are shipping ours to China.

Obama was only 12 years old when the OPEC Oil Embargo happened in October 1973 to March 1974.

By far this decision of his ranks up there in his top 5 mistakes. November please hurry up and get here.

  3. Stupid is as stupid does. Obama’s inability to understand the impact his shallow decisions cause is irrefutably a sign of intellectual impairment. He needs to turn the teleprompter to setting 6, intelligent thought. MD

  4. A great campaign commercial in the making – a compilation of all his utterances of “laser focus on jobs” juxtaposed against all the shuttered businesses and foreclosed homes in flyover country.

  5. Once again The Communist sells the country out. I really hope people finally open their eyes this year to the fact that this idiot is the worst imaginable thing for America. I hope the unions turn on The Communist the way the Mafia turned on JFK and RFK when they sold them out.

  6. Let’s be happy that he did this, people! Just another item to add to his ever-growing list of incompetent measures. Now can the remaining Republican candidates focus their criticisms on Obama and not each other? Please!

As they say in French-Canadian town halls, “Ces Américains stupides”. Obama is the stupides “One”.
      Lord help us.

  7. I can read stories about Keystone a hundred times a day, and I still get angry every time. here’s an oil source from a friendly country not in the Middle East. here’s thousands of jobs in the industry, and many thousands more in the industries that serve them: restaurants, real estate, grocery stores, etc.

I asked a liberal friend to explain to me and he said patiently that we can’t keep using oil forever, so therefore we should stop looking for it now. I said “I understand now. you people are living in Crazy Town.”

I can’t believe the greenies are such an important constituency that they outrank the UNIONS. and Obama chumped the unions on this for sure. so why did he turn it down? paranoid minds might say he wants to make sure the Islamic fundies keep getting our oil revenues.

    1. Liberals like your friend are utopians rulierose. They aren’t bad people, just misguided in my opinion. Their opinions are based on feelings and emotions rather than logic. The other day I heard Bob Beckel on “The Five” admit the democrat welfare state was a failure because it created a dependency society. He felt they were doing the right thing at the time, but once again unintended consequences gets in the way of liberals good intentions. Unfortunately Beckel’s solution to the problem was not the opportunity society conservatives endorse, but more government intervention.

  9. Can anyone say destroying National Security! Obama really has no clue what he has done to our relationship with Canada, (this was a three year affair – I hope he sent flowers after he called it off) and we will not even begin to talk about the jobs he has destroyed. All of this is terrifying, and completely reprehensible, actions. He has handed US over to China. China is pretty much so far up our keester, this just pretty much gives them our back door swing to sit on and slowly destroy us.

I am a tree hugger at heart, but even I can tell you that the studies of pipelines shows that nature is not destroyed. Now if you want to give these companies big hall passes like HE gave BP, on safety issues than we would have problems.

Obama say’s no to this pipeline, cause he figures that the number of voters from the states affected will not add up to the nanny state east & west coast liberal votes that he wants.

I for one am sadden to see a President who is sooo self-centered as to totally disregard the safety of this country and its people.
