As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

Middle Class Warriors Dine Out for $260

President Obama and Michelle had dinner last night at Honolulu’s famed foodie paradise, Alan Wong’s.

The middle class was not invited.

I realize the Obamas are wealthy people, and that wealthy people have the right to drop $260 of their disposable income on chow. But if you’re going to invite Associated Press photographers along to capture your trip to Target and stage photo ops at PetSmart and Best Buy, then I’m going to write about your unpublicized excursion to Alan Wong’s.

The press pool was not invited in to take photos this time. In fact, others were discouraged from doing so too. From the pool report:

Diners have been trying to takes pictures of POTUS, only to be chased off by advance staffers.

Since when are people not allowed to take pictures?

According to the pool report, the Obamas and their friends dined on the five-course “tasting menu” that was tasty to the tune of $75 a person, $105 with wine. Among the highlights were “Sassey Salad” and bacon wrapped pork loin.

Here’s something they might have eaten, from Alan Wong’s website:

Whatever. Maybe that’s the Sassey Salad. The top part, anyway. Looks sassy.

I’m going to go out on a pretty firm limb here and say they had wine. That brings the bill for two to $210. Add in Hawaii’s 4 percent sales tax and we’re at $219.40. Let’s assume a 20 percent tip at the very least and the total comes to just over $260.

Not counting gas. For a motorcade.

    • Did what exactly????? Still blaming Bush???? And even if he did, this clown was supposed to be CHANGE!!!! Looks like the same ole crap to me, to you too????????

    • They say ‘If you can’t stand the heat stay out of the Kitchen’. Paula Dean says mooschelle couldn’t stay away, in fact she says she ate MORE than any other guest on her show!

    • Moochelle had to wear those pork chop earrings growing up being so ugly that was the only way the dog would play with her

go check her Princeton pics to verify

  1. “Big deal. It’s called a date and members of the real middle class often scrape together $260 for special occasions with their significant other. Gotta keep the lady smiling!”

Really? I have never nor would I ever have a meal for my wife and I that cost $260…..ever.
    Two reasons are that
    1) I have had exceptional dinners for around $120 for both of us, total bill, and spent the rest on something impoprtant lijke my son, or a bill, or just saved it for a rainy day.

    2) There are many thing I would like to do before I die and places I would like to go, unfortunately I do not have the ability to have someone else pay for it, so I do not go.

If the man wants a vacation fine PLEASE go (can’t hurt us to much when your not here), but the president should be paying for everything on his own with the exception of his secrect service, and the coost to fly his limo out there.
They could rent cars for the SS, charge Obama for 3% of the fuel for AF1, he pays for the gas for the ground cars, his hotel, food, parties, etc.
I have to pay for mine, therefore he should have to pay for his.

  2. The Obama’s are not wealthy people. His presidential salary does not cover their lifestyle. Where does he get the money for Mrs O’s clothes, children’s tuition, vacations etc.

  3. Wherever this Marxist goes, he causes disruption. How much money is it costing the taxpayers in Honolulu to protect him and playing another 7 hours of golf with his buddy who was busted for trying to get hookers. It just gets better all the time. Might very well be the absolute worst president in American history. I only hope that America can recover from this man made disaster

  4. jay, what flavor kool aid do you prefer? Red or pink? Those who STILL fall for the false dichotomy of GOP vs Democratic Party; or even Right versus Left are manipulated so handedly that they are unaware of it.
We have a ONE PARTY STATE with two malodorous wings. Both parties have become wholly owned subsidiaries of Goldman Sachs. So you might say there is a two party system: Goldman & Sachs.
The simpering “well W. did ________ , too, and even more so” is the whine of the neutered yuppie who is eagerly awaiting to prove his/her/its lack of racism by skipping through the abattoir.
I will not counter your “Bush’s 2.3 trillion” with Solyndra, the entire Watermelon Scam, Fannie Mae and Freddie F-you, Corzine, QE2, nor tyrannical war-making as if we had an absolutist King etc etc. The Globalist Eugenicists will merely substitute a Romney or a Clinton once Obama becomes obsolete.
Just what has changed under Obama? Or what difference will a Romney or a Rick Perry make? None.

  5. Your jealousy is very unattractive. A wannabe scribe like yourself should be greatful that you even get to be anywhere near greatness – lord knows you’ll never achieve any by yourself…

  7. This one is a stretch. What’s wrong with wanting a little privacy while eating? We complain about the media searching for a story and creating one with a post that turns bloggers into a frenzy.

  8. That’s really courageous of you to report the obvious hypocrisy of this scenario. I wonder: Did you do the same when George W. Bush was in office? Will you do the same when (presumably) Romney is? As a veteran White House reporter, you surely know that all American presidents, regardless of political party, position themselves as warriors for the middle class and blow a lot of hot air about supporting the “little guy” and “average” Americans — even though they support policies that benefit the wealthy and powerful. Does this come through in your “reporting”? Because if this kind of hypocrisy is of concern to you only when it’s a Democrat in office, you aren’t a reporter; you’re a propagandist.

  9. Hey Keith!

Talk to your web people and see about getting, “like, dislike, and reply” options on the comments. I’d love to insult neo-communist, mentally ill, democrat roaches! Those fools need a good dose of reality!

  10. ON September 11th 2001 the part of the Pentagon with the relevant records was hit by “Al-Qaida”. But Jay, why was Eric Holder in Oklahoma City before the Murrow building “truck bomb” which was done by “white supremacist right wing militia”.
This racial and political party loyalty is playing into their hands. Obama is just a blackface of the New World Order. W. the Cowboy face of same.
They are at war with US the free American people.

  11. I can never understand how the ultra rich – be they politicians, Hollywood elites, or other entertainers can stand before a crowd of poor or lower middleclass people (or even Occupy Wall Street folks)
and say they are “poor just like you” and get away with it!! To hear some of them talk you’d think they were raised on a rural farm in Iowa in the Dust Bowl in the middle of the Great Depression. In fact most grew up in very comfortable environments with the more pleasurable comforts life has to offer -or at least they’ve attained that lifestyle now. Then they proceed to vilify
the “rich” as if they are somehow not rich! I just don’t get it!!…

  12. The only thing unreasonable about the story is the attention you’re giving a night out. You seem like a hypocrite for criticizing a dinner that cost $130 per person. While this is certainly more than a family on a budget would spend for a regular night out, for a white collar professional, on vacation, in Hawaii, and the leader of the most powerful country in the world, it seems completely within reason. Please find something legit to gripe about.

  13. I assume peas were the staple for Obama. After all, he has called for shared sacrifice and “Eat your peas.”
Shameless display of arrogance and insensitivity toward the poor and middle class.
The Obama Family is not a class act. Harvard and Princeton does not make a man or a woman, but an arrogant snob.

  14. hey How about did Moochelle Antoinette wear her $2000 sundress to dinner?

I didn’t know TARGET sold her that dress on her last shopping foray.

I finally realized lame stream media types focused on her arms to distract comments on her storage trunk behind

    • Yeah, Joshua, in case you haven’t heard, Obama is our first wealthy president AND he has the nerve to drop a whopping $260 on a night out. (note my shared sarcasm).

  15. The evening went on wonderfully. The food and wine were fantastic. When someone brought up the fact that so many people back in the states were out of work and some could not even afford to pay bills or even buy food the president’s wife stood up extending her expensive glass of wine into the air saying, “then let them eat cake”, drawing laughter from the president and the entire party.
This vacation paid for by the U.S. taxpayer.

  16. Gee, the ‘vacation’ has been estimated to be costing around $4.5 MILLION dollars, which is at least 10X what obama makes in a year…so, who the heck is paying?? ..Oh silly me, the Amerikan TAXPAYERS..that’s who. grrrrrr.

I wonder how many of us taxpayers can afford to spend 10x of our yearly pay on a Hawaiian vacation?????????

  17. Was she wearing her $2,000. sundress? I am sure she enjoyed her tasty “butter selections” from Hawaii. This is the same “hyppo-crite” who is always preaching about healthy eating habits? Good thing she is not flying business class…she would require two seats.

  18. $260 dollars for dinner is not that much money considering how pricey other restaurants can be. This article accomplishes absolutely nothing. How insightful of you Keith!

  19. they are sure living hi-off the hog..wonder what they were spending before the billions were missing? I bet you they will be sery wealthy when they leave the white house, If the Clintons were able and gready enough to reap-off goods from the white wonder what these two will do., yeah they sure know how to live it up..on
    O.P MONEY..

  20. The writer and most of the commenters are acting like clowns. I am lower-middle class, but I still support conservative economics that reward those that create and innovate, with wealth. Many poorer folks still believe in those ideals even if they are not rich themselves. That being said, just because somebody is wealthy does not mean they cant believe in bigger government and more entitlements for those at the bottom.

  21. Why don’t you respect their libertarian right to self-determination? Why are you interfering in their personal business, and why are you anecdotally speculating about their dining habits without proof? Very disappointing column.

  22. Slow news day? With all of the real problems caused by this quasi-socialist administration, you have to carp about a dinner date between Mr. and Mrs. O? BTW, $260 is NOT an outrageous sum for date night. I’m middle class and have spent about $260 on date night before. This type of BS takes attention away from the real problems, such as the fact that Obama-Care is NOT revenue-neutral, or all of the anti-business regs this administration has passed, or the cynical way this administration fails to do anything meaningful about the deficit and debt.

  23. And who pays? We do. He should not eat anything that the poorest cannot afford. This royalty mentality is getting to me. He has a chef on staff. He is already paid for. That is who should prepare all meals, or he should pay out of his pocket. Perhaps the same per diem other Federal employees are given.

    He makes me sick!

  24. $260 for one meal? That is our grocery money for two weeks, and I am Active Duty military barely getting by. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. for shoving my face in it. I just got back from Iraq. We did not have enough money for a decent Christmas so I had to pawn some of my things. Luckily we have a fake tree. We had rueben sandwiches, french fries, and crystal light for our Christmas dinner. Just to stop the vitriole from the left, my wife is not fat, we have only one child, and I have two college degrees in pertinent fields. What I don’t have is the stomach for these two anymore.

    • Whoa, whoa, whoa. You’re active duty military barely getting by and you had to pawn some things for a decent Christmas?!? You just got back from Iraq so you were getting tax-free, hazardous duty/imminent danger pay and hazardous location pay among others. Sorry, but my experience tells me that you are the exception, not the rule, and that the exception is usually over-extended on credit among other things. If you find yourself so financially destitute, I suggest you talk to your First Sergeant or seek counseling at your local Family Support Center. And just so you know, this is not “vitriole from the left.”

    • Having spent over 20 years in the military, your story sounds to me like either, 1 – BS or, 2 – a series of bad decisions on your part. So either stop lying, or take responsibility and stop whining.
