As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

Obama Launches “$40” Payroll Tax Cut Campaign

President Obama is stepping up his PR war against House Republicans with a just-scheduled 12:15 pm ET appearance at the White House to tout a new campaign highlighting the tax break families will lose if the partial payroll tax holiday is not extended.

From the White House:

In the afternoon, the President will continue to urge House Republicans to do what’s right for the American people by allowing a vote on the short term bipartisan compromise passed by almost the entire Senate.  If Congress fails to extend the payroll tax cut, the typical family making $50,000 a year will have about $40 less to spend or save with each paycheck.

Obama will point people to a new section of the White House website where they can “share what a $40 paycheck means to them.” In addition, he’ll urge them to make use of a new Twitter hashtag, #40dollars.

The White House has also rounded up a group of citizens “who would see their taxes go up” to appear alongside Obama. Unclear if they’ll recite their assuredly heart-rending tales of prospective woe.

Obama has been demanding that House Republicans move a two-month payroll tax cut extension approved by the Senate.

Obama today will leave unsaid, of course, that everyone’s taxes will also go up if the Senate fails to return and act on the House-passed year-long payroll tax cut extension.

  1. this $40 tax cut means $40 less that gets added to my Social Security account because this payrol tax is funding SSI. So leave my Social Security alone Presidente Obama.

  2. What a bogus “tax cut” from this bogus President! At this late date of the month there is no way that businesses or the government can make a payroll adjustment to accommodate a two month reduction in the payroll tax and Obama and his minions of bots know it. All this is a propaganda stunt by a guy who knows how to do nothing but campaign. Anyone who truly believes otherwise is a fool.

  3. Barry talks about the middle class all while his wife is off on yet another taxpayer funded million dollar vacation.

He has no credibility and no shame.

  4. Our “Clown in Chief” does it again. His sophomoric antics are insulting to one’s intelligence. I used to get embarassed for him, now I’m just embarassed by him.

  5. If the House acts and passes the Senate bill, a family making $50k will save $40 / paycheck more FOR TWO MONTHS.

If the Senate acts and passes the House bill, a family making $50k will save $40 / paycheck more FOR THE WHOLE YEAR.

    Why is this never mentioned?

  6. i wish some would report that this bill shorts Social Security so we are borrowing the difference from China….both sides of the isle are wrong on this…its time to start paying our bills or get to the point when China just takes us over…

  7. Hey Obama,
Did you have Michelle check all the ingredients of those pizzas before you ordered/ate them? No? Sure is funny she wants to check all the ingredients of the pizza my family eats, eh?

  8. All these whining from the prez for a 2-month extension???? Extend the d*mn thing for a year and shut up! Extending it for 2 months so you can use it as a pawn later is sick.

  9. I am a retired and on social security. What does this do for those of us who are dependant? It is simple; a reduction of time for it to go bankrupt and our politicians are telling the ignorant how great this is. We need to get rid of all of them but primarily Obama who does not care for this country and cares only to beat the Republicans.

  10. The pizza boxes are such a farce.

This guy has a personal staff that cooks for him and given the $4.5m/year budget for them he can have the fanciest gourmet pizza made by simply pulling the kings cord. It seems everything he does is for a photo op. Guarantee he is following a script to portray himself as ‘one of us’.

  11. Obama’s EPA passed a regulation yesterday that will cost families hundreds of dollars more in electricity costs and put thousands out of work. If there were concern about families finances, this Utility MACT would not have been passed.

  12. A $40 tax cut is still a tax cut. Is Satan wearing Thermal underwear? Was that just dozens of swine crossing my third story window? Oh yes it must be. The GOP is AGAINST a tax cut. Oh yeah that explains it, it doesn’t benefit the rich at the expense of everyone else. ONLY A MORON WOULD SUPPORT THE 2011 GOP.

    • The GOP’s plan was for 12 months, Obama’s is only for 2 months. So tell us who is for and against the tax break again….. Funny how you left that little fact out.

    • You obviously don’t pay attention. The Republicans aren’t saying they don’t want a tax break, they don’t a two month tax break they want a one year or two year break. Now you obviously don’t know how to do math so let me help you out. 2 months of $40/paycheck (based on a bi-weekly pay plan) is $160 savings. The Republicans want 12 months (52 weeks/26 paychecks) of savings = $1040. So who doesn’t want a tax cut? What are Democrats so scared of passing a one year tax break?

      • Gee I guess I wasn’t thinnin. But I only get paid once a month.

Oh well ……… There is plenty of that fake money from the reserve to go around

  13. What an idiot this man is not Presidential, he is not interested in passing this legislation but only in creating an issue. The American people need to wake up and throw the Democrats out. The press needs to report the truth—the house passed a bill with a full year extension of the payroll tax reduction plan–Reid said no to it and now the Press is making it a republican issue. This country is being ruined by a corrupt President and Press.

    • The president doesn’t pass legislation. That is congresses job. The house GOP has no interest in passing legislation that is workable. You forgot to mention all the BS in the year long house bill that has nothing to do with the issue at hand. They (house GOP) passed a measure that has zero chance of becoming law. You may ask why would they do such a thing? So a bunch of Morons can shout about their bill being ignored. It did its job.

      • gRATtan: You have your facts all wrong, as do all supporters of the Socialist Regime.
The Republicans want to extend the tax cuts for the entire year, the Socialist swines in the democRat party – yes, Obama included – want to create an issue instead of helping the people/economy with a real tax measure, so they put up a dummy two month alternative and the Republicans are sticking to their guns for US, the tax payers.

You might want to educate yourself before spouting off with the same old liberal lies that the media broadcasts. It only makes you look like some poor fool with an Obama bumper sticker on their car.

      • You mean “BS” like the pipeline that would create thousands of jobs for working families? The socialists in the Senate want to pass a 2 month tax break that would be impossible to implement in that timeframe. Tell us again who’s trying to pass un-passable legislation….

  14. What he is not going to say is that the cuts will be paid from the people with mortgages as interest increase on the monthly payments, forever,
In other words, I will pay penalty on my mortgage for someone who already has a job..Where is the equality,, this President has narrow mind set and no vision.

  15. First it is $19.23 per week, so the story is already overstated by 4%
Second, the $19.23 is taxed at your normal state and federal rates.
Assume all your taxes add up to 25%, you net $14.42 per week. Is this really going to save the economy?

  16. This is an obvious misrepresentation, the only way it amounts to $40 per paycheck is in a bi-monthly pay program. The real amount is a little less than $20 per week and for a person making $1000 per week that is hardly a tragedy!

  17. It’s the $80 tax cut. ($40 x 2 months) How do you give a tax break to the 52% who pay no income tax? You cut their social security tax. More redistribution.

  18. Typical lies from the scumbag Obama. They’re trying to put the blame on the Republicans (again) but the democrats are the ones sabotaging the tax cut. The Republicans are pushing for the 2% tax cut to be in effect for all of 2012. However, the democRats have devised this scheme of “2 months or nothing” and the media is doing its duty to the Enemy of the State – oops, I mean “President” Obama – by reporting it as such as to make the people think the Republicans want to raise taxes and B. Hussein al-Obama is on the side of the working people. Nothing could be further from the truth, and the democRats are going to get away with it.
People, we have too much to lose. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THE DEMOCRAT PARTY SAYS. DO NOT BELIEVE THE JIHADIST IN THE WHITE HOUSE…

    * * * O B A M A L I E S * * *

  19. This fool, Obama, is playing politics with our country at a time when most of us are struggling. We’re looking at 16 trillion in debt….money our kids will have to pay back. Have a nice 4 million dollar vacay, you liar.

  20. It’s funny. The Dems only want a 2-month tax break, but didn’t want to pass the Republican’s 1-year tax break. They’d rather have people save $80 instead of $480. On top of that, their plan cannot be implemented in 2 months, but the Dem sheeple will still insist on it and the media will continue to not report the fact that the Dems shot down the House’s 1-year tax break.

  21. Its is NOT a Tax CUT!!

    Wake up!!

All it is doing is defunding Social Security. But now the Dems says its a tax cut?! If the Republican President were to do this, they would be going crazy saying-See, Republicans want to take away your social security and kill Grandma. Wish there was TRUTH in reporting instead of pushing a WH agenda.

  22. What bothers me the most is that this is a reduction in Entitlement funding for a political gimmick.
The 2010 Federal Budget was $701 B for Social Security, $793 B for Medicare and Medicaid, thus $1,494 Billion of a $3,456 Billion budget (or 43% of all federal spending). The US Federal Tax Receipts for 2010 was $865 Billion from FICA (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid) or just 57.9% outlays. And the President and Congress want to further decrease this? Are they serious?
I constantly hear from the proponents of the entitlements that these are self-funded. This would imply that we actually need to INCREASE the tax rate. Total FICA tax is 15.3% for self-employed and 7.65% for employee/employer (note this is a different tax from Income tax). Thus to actually fund the entitlements, taxes need to be increased by 57.9% (assuming linear) 24.16% or 12.08% for employee/employer. This would raise tax revenue to $2,663 B and reduce the deficit from $1,200 B to $794 B. Then next year we can raise the tax again since the funding model is demand based and outlays continually increase… ie. Pyramid.
FYI… DOD and all other Discretionary Spending (Budgets for the alphabet soup of Departments, Agencies, Congress, White House, etc..) was $689 B for DOD and $660 B for Discretionary or $1,349 B which is 90.3% of the entitlement spending. So theoretically, if we end FICA and the associated entitlements, the federal spending would be about $1,754 Billion. Federal Receipts would be around $1,297 Billion, thus a budget short fall of around $457 Billion and the economy would receive 15.3% of its income back…. This would in turn produce higher receipts.

  23. Why not switch to the Fair Tax, keep you ENTIRE paycheck, and only pay taxes based on your personal consumption?

It makes taxpayers out of the millions of people who work ‘off the books’ (think illegal immigrnats here), and would largely increase the total Federal revenues.

  24. Meanwhile, Eric “Snake in the Grass” Holder sticks his forked tongue out @ the American public while slithering back under the rocks in the Rose Garden.

  25. NO ONE will get a single penny more if they are not on a payroll!

This includes those on welfare, unemployed, Social Security and all pensioners, those trying to live on shrinking 401Ks, widows scraping by on savings, or anyone living off savings accounts.

So Obama’s scam fails to benefit those who need it the most.

But for someone taking a $4 million, 17 day Hawaiian vacation on us taxpayers, who gives a rat’s patoot?

    • The unemployed are getting their benefits extended yet again as part of this measure. I’m not exactly sure how long they are planning on extending it this time, but pretty soon the original 27 weeks, that became 99 weeks, will become 199 weeks. Eventually they will just start sending you a paycheck the day you are born and skipping the foreplay where you actually have to get a job and contribute to society.

  26. Americans would have more buying power if Obama and the democrats weren’t eroding the value of the dollar by printing money out of thin air and spending trillions more in half the time that Bush or any other president has in the past. As the size of government substantially increases, the amount of personal income among Americans substantially decreases. Obama takes a vacation nearly every week while Americans can’t even afford to take a break from their jobs. Democrats go all out in spending as much as they possibly can while in power and charging it to future generations, whom will have significantly less of a future to potentially prosper then generations in the past. Anyone that votes for four more years of this will surely be voting for what has been happening in Europe in recent years as they teeter on the brink of collapse.

  27. @ obama it took him 1day too find these people making 50,000$. I would bet my yrs. pay check, our all that money i will save in 2 mo.from his great payroll tax cut, that these people are unoin worker’s. Not people in fly over country that go too church, and have a gun.

  28. Obama wants to do $40 extra per paycheck for 2 months. House Republicans have already passed $40 extra per paycheck for an entire year. Remind me again why Obama isn’t being questioned about this blatant disparity? And he even has the gaul to parade people around when the Republican bill would provide them will 6 times the benefit.

  29. Talk about fuzzy math and a willing media. $50,000 divided by 52 weeks = $961.54 per week. The tax break in question is a 2% reduction in the social security tax [fica] that is taken out of each paycheck. 961.54 x 2%= $19.64
He also says this is the average paycheck. Really?? Come on America, wake up!! Don’t fall for the blatant lies coming out of Obama’s mouth. In order for his $40 scenario to hold up, the average salary of the average American would have to be $105,000 or $2019.23 per week.

  30. This guy is a total embarrassment. Can you imagine ever seeing Ronald Reagan, G.W. Bush or even Bill Clinton schelping around the DC area with no suit coat, collar open, tie askew and sleeves rolled up to buy a $40 bone for his mutt and to pick up pizzas? He’s a disgrace to the office…
