In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

Obama to Address Nation on Afghanistan Troop Levels

President Obama will address the nation at 8 pm ET Wednesday night to detail his decision on how many troops to withdraw from Afghanistan.

The latest reporting, including this piece by the Associated Press, indicates Obama will say he is withdrawing 5,000 this summer and 10,000 by the end of the year. Obama will also spell out plans for bringing home the remaining 20,000 troops sent to Afghanistan last year as part of the surge – possibly bringing them out by the end of next year.

Obama will meet with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates separately today.

Clinton is slated to testify on Capitol Hill this week.

  1. The reduction in the number of troops does not call for an evening Presidential speech.
Unless he’s ordering all troops to leave the battlefields of Afganistan, it’s not national newsworthy.

    1. These national proclamations usually give him a bump in the polls. I agree, we should bring all of our soldiers home.

I also wonder where Boehner is with that congressional action to pull funding for the non-war in Libya. Haven’t heard a peep from him since the big golf game…

    2. …Lets see Obama “explain” “US Military Ops in Libya…”?
And WHY DOES NO ONE IN ‘Main Stream Media’ EVER COMPARE “SYRIA” to “LIBYA”?
Civilians are being killed in both nations; US warplanes, ships, Special Forces & C4I are being used in Libya…yet Syria…?
Why NO U.S. INTEREST in SYRIA?
WHY DOES NO IN THE “WH Press Corps” ASK THAT?

      1. I listen to BBC World Service and I know more about the situation in Syria than any US cable news “host” or “talking head” or “politican” I see on TV…

  2. Bringing our troops back is great news, they have sacrificed enough over there for too long. But in my jaundiced view of world affairs I have a feeling that we will end up with boots on the ground in Libya for the almighty big oil. Really hope I’m wrong on this.

  3. Hmm, that still leaves 65,000 troops over there. He’s just pulling them out to put them over in Libya. McCain & John Kerry just introduced a bill to fund a war effort over there. Don’t worry though, we can afford it! Just another nail in the USA’s coffin and one-way trip to becoming a third world country. We are on our way to oblivion the same way every other “empire” did it from Rome to Russia to Britian. Socialism doesn’t work and never has throughout history. We all have a front row seat watching this “trainwreck” occur.

    1. McCain and Kerry can write all the bills they want. They have to do something to keep themselves busy.

According to our Constitution: “Article I.Section.7. All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.”

Guarantee they will never get the House to propose funding for Libya. If they try to sneak it in as an amendment, they won’t be successful. We are watching them.
