As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

Carney Ducks off Camera for Today’s Briefing

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney today turned off the briefing room lights to address reporters in an unusual off camera gaggle, taking some of the spotlight off the White House as its senior Middle East peace negotiator resigns and questions arise over whether too much information has come out about the SEAL 6 raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.

Beyond that, Carney may be a bit weary. He’s briefed on camera three times this week already, and he edgily noted as he departed today’s gaggle that he had to cut the 11:35 am session short because he had a “a 12 o’clock meeting with one of my many bosses.”

Carney would not confirm the then-breaking news that Middle East envoy George Mitchell, who was at the White House, was there to tender his resignation. But Carney didn’t deny it and said a written presidential statement would be released shortly.

The decision to hold the off-camera gaggle just before releasing news of the Mitchell resignation is consistent with a clear White House strategy to low-key the departure.

With the news not official, Carney didn’t have to answer questions about it, and he didn’t have to appear to be stonewalling on TV. Obama will not appear in public today with Mitchell to thank him, denying the TV cameras a platform for a cable news feast on the failure of Obama to secure peace in the Middle East after nearly two and a half years of trying.

The stakes in the Middle East are huge for Obama, who came into office disparaging George W. Bush for not placing sufficient emphasis on getting a deal and who appointed Mitchell to do just that. Mitchell’s departure is tantamount to an admission of failure.

Carney may also have wanted to avoid a public spat with Defense Secretary Gates, who yesterday appeared to be suggesting that White House officials broke an agreement to keep quiet about how the Bin Laden raid went down.

Frankly, a week ago Sunday, in the Situation Room, we all agreed that we would not release any operational details from the effort to take out bin Laden. That all fell apart on Monday, the next day.

Gates added that Navy SEALs who performed the operation now have concerns for the safety of their families.

Oddly, the White House press corps bothered neither to ask about Gates nor to find out why the briefing was off camera.

  1. Incompetence, thy name is Obama! Mr. Campaign master himself has managed to just about PI$$ED off everyone, The leftwing loonies are beside themselves that he ordered the hit on Usama, the Pakistani are up in arms(the have neuclear) The SEALS have been compromised and identified along with tactical information. Can someone please spell “Impeachment”!

  2. The Seal Team were under orders when they struck. I hope there were no names of the Team given. Black Operations are what they are….Black Operations. (an operation that is for assasination only) They are TOP SECRET! The Politicians need to learn to keep their mouths shut, mostly when they are the ones who ordered and approved the Black Operation.

    • I served 15 yrs TS/SCI… the idiot politicians have NO clue as to what they divulge…. ignorance is bliss, I suppose….

  3. Oddly?? Oddly?? ha ha ha. The Corps are not journalists or investigative journalists, they are note taking parrots. Who What When Where and Why is no longer taught. IMO 1. Big Daddy killed Osama because his handlers were worried Osama must have held blackmail docs proving Big Daddy was born in Kenya, that he obtained through his former business associates in Africa. No, Osama didn’t threaten to kill another Muslim Big Daddy, who is doing a good job on his own of destroying (he calls it “changing”) the USA. Osama would only hit USA, not Big Daddy. 2. After silencing Osama, the Big Daddy handlers strategized how to shut up granny. She just won’t stop saying she was at Big Daddy’s birth in Kenya. So, the sophomoric strategy on the issue of granny is to tell the USA (he did) that the big bad angry Osama gang are threatening revenge by killing his lil’ granny. That give Big Daddy two options… make it look like Osama’s gang kills granny or tell the USA he has a team of protectors taking granny to a “safe location” where they will protect her the rest of her natural life. i.e, no more interviews with granny, folks. 3. Now, what about Mitchell, Gates, the nervous 6 SEALS (As a Christian, I thought it was 7 SEALS :) ) Maybe Mitchell has some integrity, maybe Gates leaked himself so they can bump off the SEALs now nervous because of the “leaks” who might be loyal Americans and TALK, and would put the blame on Mame, boys. This is getting all too funny. We better impeach this foreigner guy and get on with restoring our FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY. Put him in a place with a moat.

  4. Carney made a foolish move to take this appointment. Did he really think anyone can effectively make this president look sane? What was this guy thinking? Shall we put it off to too young and inexperienced to know better?

  5. How long will it take these reporters to admit they helped elect the most incompetent and INEXPERIENCED person to ever be president.

    • Joseph, are you kidding, they continue to tell us to stop going to church because the MESSIA has arrived.

Exactly why I don’t watch TV any more. The “NEWS” stations are in bed with NOBRAINA.

  6. I always thought Sec. Gates was an intelligent man. I guess not with him trusting the this White House bunch.
    They,d sell out their mother.

  7. Most transparent administration evah.
    Smartest president evah.
    Best economy evah.
    Best war president evah.
    Best border control president evah.

Do not believe me? Ask MSNBC or the other Democrat propaganda sites.

  8. I agree the media picked the republican candidate in the last presidential election. Lets hope the next time around the genuine legal American voter recognizes this and researches the actual record of the candidates. We should want someone who is anti establishment and a firm believer in smaller government. The incestuous relationship of politicians with big labor unions and big corporations, that yields crony capitlism and blanket labor union suppport, has to be stopped if we are going to have any faith in our elected government representatives.

  9. It seems that the campaigner-in-chief did not get a large spike in the polls with his supposed heroic efforts to rid the world of an old man who could only watch porno so he is now going to do away with cameras in his efforts to maintain his presidency. He is sad. He and his wife should slink back to Chicago!

  10. This Administration is funmbling around like it is clueless regarding the role of America in the world. It will be too long before Obama and his misguided minions are sent back to Chicago and responsible adults who really care about the future of this country can be appointed to restore sanity and balance to our foreign policy. And then there is the mainstream media, sitting on its hands and ignoring its traditional responsibility to hold Administrations accountable for their actions. The failure of progressive ideology to align with the real world grows more apparent every day within this hoplessly lost Obama administration. If this radical president survives the 2012 election, America is looking a a very dismal future indeed.

  11. Gibbs was a prick who thought nothing of giving the finger to whomever was asking a question. Carney, on the other hand, looks like a kid who has to pee really bad when he’s put on the spot.
Does anyone remember what it was like to have someone like Tony Snow as spokesperson at a briefing?

    • I remember Tony Snow…he was a statesman. Also really, really miss having adults in charge. These guys act like a bunch of narcissistic teens throwing a wild party while the parents are away for the weekend.

  12. TV cameras don’t lie, so if they are present the President can not lie to the PUBLIC who hired him to lead, not deceive.

What are you afraid of Mr. Obama? When your lips move we know you are lying, why not let us hear first hand the lies you are spreading. An informed public is an educated public, and since you counted on the UNEDUCATED to elect you, I see your ploy in keeping AMERICA UNEDUCATED.

    POTUS, no, just POS.

  13. Really? This is how a free country works, our leaders purposely make sure when decisions are made that questions cannot be asked on camera? So that the administration wouldn’t appear to be “stonewalling”? Sounds like how a communist country would try to control the press. If Obama had his way, I’m pretty sure there would be nothing but two state run TV stations that reported nothing but BS all day long.

  14. Oh Gee, what a surprise, this Adm. attempting to dodge failure? Naw, couldnt be. Apperantly the only thing he (Odrama) did right was to say “OK go ahead and try to get him (U.B.L.)” and everything from that moment on was the usual and expected cluster-(fill-in-blank). If this elementary administration was to get any more big terrorist so much classified info would be leaked we would probably see on the news the pictures of the agents that actually did the undercover work. I can see it now on M.S.Dem.B.C., “And here is agent John Doe, he has a lovely wife and three kids and blends right into the Florida suburb they live in, his neighbors probably never even knew he was a C.I.A. agent”.

  15. I wouldnt say anything about Herman Cain, better hope Christie (of New Jersey) doesnt get talked into running, he smooches the Muslims as much or more as Obumbler does. He may be a conservative when it comes to spending but I dont want a Mosque on every corner in every town in this country and if he runs and gets elected thats what will happen. Check him out real good, he is full of it.

  16. Is anyone really SURPRISED by this stunt? This is all part of this regime’s transparancy!!

This stunt ranks right up there with Baghdad Bob and what he use to do for that regime!

  17. Quote of the year..

“Thanking Obama Bin Lyin for killing Osama Bin Laden is like going into McDonalds and thanking Ronald McDonald for the hamburger. It’s the guy cooking the burger that should get the credit, not the clown.”

  18. And Israel, this very day, is defending its borders from attacks that are the boldest in years. The whole Bin Laden kill operation is being used by Obama’s administration to detract attention from what’s really going on….the uprising of Middle East forces who are only interested in their own definition of peace….which for them means Israel cannot stand, and only Sharia law can reign. The policies that Obama has fostered and nurtured throughout his career are achieving their intended purpose. Americans need to wake up.

  19. The only thing “Transparent” about this Administration is the fact that you can see right through them. And this bunch aint got nothing on old Baghdad Bob, Im sure he graduated from the Chi-Town school of spin as well w/flying colors. And from what’s being said thru the old grapevine is that mitta Peddident didnt even really want to do it but it was kinda done when he was in one of his many offices he has in this country. A.K.A. ‘Golf Courses’ and it would have been a real campaign-boner had it gotten out (and w/this bunch it would have) that they were ready to go and he didnt go along w/it. He didnt give a steaming pile about killing him, its all just a reelection scam. I have already read somewhere how he has “done what Bush couldnt do in eight years!”, Yea right, and had it all been up to him none of it would have happened and all of the innocent cab drivers and barbers at Gitmo would have been given a “wer’e sorry check” and a schloarship at the University of their choice and that “awfull place” would have been shut down and given back to Castro with an apology letter for us ever stealing it from them.

  20. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this lately, but…

Gosh I love you guys…thanks for the smile and the confidence that the whole world hasn’t gone mad. I was worried for awhile there…

  21. “Oddly”? Only if you expect the newspeople at thebeiefings to behave like journalists, instead of partisan cheerleaders… Nothing odd about it, just business as usual….
