In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

President Obama’s Trivial Pursuits

The Middle East is afire with rebellion, Japan is imploding from an earthquake, and the battle of the budget is on in the United States, but none of this seems to be deterring President Obama from a heavy schedule of childish distractions.

The newly installed tandem of White House Chief of Staff William Daley and Senior Adviser David Plouffe were supposed to impart a new sense of discipline and purpose to the White House. Instead, they are permitting him to showcase himself as a poorly focused leader who has his priorities backward.

This morning, as Japan’s nuclear crisis enters a potentially catastrophic phase, we are told that Obama is videotaping his NCAA tournament picks and that we’ll be able to tune into ESPN Wednesday to find out who he likes.

Saturday, he made his 61st outing to the golf course as president, and got back to the White House with just enough time for a quick shower before heading out to party with Washington’s elite journalists at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

With various urgencies swirling about him, Saturday’s weekly videotaped presidential address focusing on “Women’s History Month” seemed bizarrely out of touch.

Obama Friday took time out to honor the 2009-10 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. Thursday was a White House conference on bullying – not a bad idea perhaps, but not quite Leader of the Free World stuff either.

Obama appeared a little sleepy as he weighed in against the bullies, perhaps because he’d spent the night before partying with lawmakers as they took in a Chicago Bulls vs. Charlotte Bobcats game.

Meanwhile, the president has been studying for weeks whether to establish a No Fly Zone over Libya, delaying action while the point becomes increasingly moot as Qaddafi begins to defeat and slaughter his opponents. And lawmakers from both Parties are wondering why he seems to be AWOL in the deficit reduction debate.

The Libya indecision follows an inconsistent response to the protests that ousted former Egyptian President Mubarak and seemed to catch the White House off guard. The perfunctory response from the White House Monday to Saudi Arabia’s dispatch of troops to Bahrain suggested the administration wasn’t prepared for that one either.

But the fun stuff won’t end anytime soon. On Thursday, the Taoiseach of Ireland will be in town to help the president celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And then Friday it’s off to Brazil for the start of a three-country Latin American tour.

Oddly, he’ll be missing Carnival, which went down last week.

  1. If you put Obama’s behavior in the context of his work history (college professor, community organizer, state politician) then all of his actions make sense. He has grown up in an insulated business environment where someone else (ie. the university, the state government, the federal government, the political fundraisers) has always picked up the tab. He has never had to deal with the responsibilities of leadership and the consequences of a leader’s decision. To him, the presidency is how you get famous and enjoy the benefits of celebrity. The office of the President is his means to an end.

  2. He already knows he is done as a “one term mediocre president” – so might as well concentrate on having some fun and enjoy the “freebie perks of the job” – along with loser Michelle he just sees it as an opportunity to get his own personal reparations and to hell with sharing the sacrifice !!

  3. He’s biding his time. He’s got just under 2-years left as President. He knows it’s one-term. Why get so serious about things now?

  4. Man what a douche….is he brain dead retarded, clueless, doesn’t give a shit or all the above. A man like him is scary….freaky scary…cause some idiot actually believe in him.

    1. No. Let me say this. Not some idiot. 43% of the population still believes in him, if you can believe the polls! THAT’S what’s scary!!!

  5. Mr. Koffler,

Please admit to one and all that you have never browsed the internet during your working days, or taking time off to take a vacation or enjoy a personal hobby. Please admit this to us, and if you can’t, please delete this absurd blog post that reeks of hypocrisy .

  6. Obama for God’s sake at least ACT like you care about anything other than fun! Japan is going under, the whole world is following this closely, and YOU are completely oblivious. Oh yes… eventually you’llhave to make some little speech about it, in your usual monotone uncaring voice. WE see right through you, we know the real Obama!

  7. This makes me sick to my stomach to see this man that was elected by the people to turn his back on not only America but the world when everything is in a literal fush done the toilet. No budget for goverment workers, on the brink of civil war in Lybia, catostrophic disasters in Japan, stocks falling do to Japan crisis, economic fallout similar to the depression. Yet he can find time to enjoy his gulf outingat the expense of the tax payers, and the personal trainer flown in from Chicago again at the expense of tax payers, and lastly the video taping of his bracket for March Madness. Wow hope this was the change that everyone wanted. If this was President Bush could you imagine the leberal backlash, but where is this for Mr. Obama.

  8. As the saying goes… “It is better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you are a fool than open it up and leave no room for doubt.” I’m guessing his handlers probably roll their eyes every time he goes into his den to watch TV. They know there are major problems he should be trying to solve but they also know his problem solving attempt tend to make things worse. Better the country think he is a fool watching TV than to know he is a fool when they seem him grapple with one of the major issues on his plate.

  9. The president also sleeps barely 6 hours a night. You highlight the things that keep the man sane (attention to his favorite sports) and things that have probably been on the presidential calendar for months as “distractions”, then ignore the time in between. Many former presidents all had to do the same BS when world crisis were taking place. That’s what the president has to do, juggle the BS with world and domestic issues. Bush was reading my pet goat to a classroom of children (“not a bad idea perhaps, but not quite Leader of the Free World stuff either”) on 9/11. He sat there for a long period of time before being escorted to an undisclosed location WHILE the country was under attack. How ever you feel about his action/inaction on that day is subjective. It’s quite naive, in my opinion, to think the President is unable to multitask the most important matters all the while play the role of Ambassador to the Free World, to which Obama does so well.

    1. Can you say Brain Washed. As a goverment employee how might be laid off starting Friday. Yes I think that this man/child of a “President” is a disgrace to America and is not handling his role as leader of the free world with any respect towards America. As for President Bush he was reading the stories before the attacks, and like most people didn’t know this was terroist attack until the second plane. Also Bush did something about it and didn’t sit on the sideline and watch as America falls and crumbles.

  10. Isn’t it time to impeach this guy? THE worst president in modern history? At least he’s help set the democratic party back for years as people finally wake up to his poor leadership.

  11. Mr. Obama is a prime example of what a career politician really looks like.
He is very qualified as a speaker.
However he has no experience in leadership, decision making, running a business, staffing, or budget discipline.
Mix those inequities with the power of the presidency and you end up with political and economic chaos.
It is imperative that everone vote in ’12, and whether conservative or liberal, use the constitution as your litmus test for the presidential candidate.
We need candid, honest, straight-talking people to stand up for what is right.
Hopefully this downward spiral will be reversed.

  12. The world’s 3rd largest economy is crumbling and Obama is worried about his bracket – BTW, what happens when Japan calls in our debt – they are number two when it comes to lending to the US.

  13. One has to wonder if a person who grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii is harboring some sort of animosity toward the Japanese?

What kind of world leader does not speak on behalf of his citizens by offering condolences and aid to the Japanese people?? The US was quick to send to former Presidents to Haiti, but for Japan, we sit by quietly???

I really don’t understand this Administration.

What did you expect from the Child Executive? Sorry, couldn’t resist putting those two words together after seeing your phrase, “childish distractions.”
On a more serious note, forty years ago, I protested when a boy named Barry came into the United States to visit a known drug dealer in Decatur, IL and told people he wanted to be president of this country even though he hadn’t been born here. Barry’s drug dealing handler for that visit thought it important enough to send a message through a friend of mine (who was employed as his children’s babysitter), that if I told people about what Barry said that I’d be sorry. Well, I am sorry today, but not that I told people, only that this child-man who has been trained and coddled for four decades is now occupying the office for which he was groomed.
I tried to tell the FBI what I know, but they don’t care because the Holder Social Injustice Department considers this a political question settled by the election; they insist they are not equipped to do anything about the fraud perpetrated on the American voters in 2008. The Holder Social Injustice Department is too busy protecting the Black Panthers and courting the approval of CAIR and the illegal immigrants. Welcome to the fulfillment of my nightmare, America; many thanks to the idiots who voted for this aberration.
One other thing, Tim Geithner was well aware of Barry back in 1970 since Barry attended school in Jakarta, Indonesia with his sister. Tim had quite a bit of knowledge about Barry including his many names, Koranic studies and impending move to HI at the direction of SAD.
Two words come to mind when thinking about these two in tandem: demolition team. I hope I’m wrong Barry and Tim, so prove me that you’re not tasked with demoting the US economy and military supremacy to accomodate our enemies. We must scrutinize everything these two do and make it clear that we will hold them accountable if they jeopardize our fiscal and homeland security.
Sorry, Tim and Barry, but you and Erik “Homie” Holder made this message to the American people necessary. If you’d come clean about your pasts, I wouldn’t have had to alert the citizenry to these facts. Many thanks to Congress, SCOTUS and Louis Freeh’s politically correct FBI.

  15. “Leader of the Free World” was never appropriate for any US president, but isn’t abandonment of that horrid lie overdue even for the slower of the population? please take the usual “commander in chief” along with it, for under the constitution all presidents swear to support is the specific assignment of CiC regarding only the military. nor are US presidents “leaders of the country”. rather, they hold the executive power of “the liars, thieves, and murderers who style themselves the Government of the United States of America”. neither they nor any president “run the country”, as will soon be finally clear even to dullards.

  16. This is whats happens when the majority of people in this country elect someone who has no relevant experience in crisis management, let alone running a huge bureaucracy such as the US gov’t is. The really sad part is that because this guy will have an unmatched war chest of money to run for re-election coupled with there being no credible choice on the Republican side who I think, in the current field could take him on as a first rate candidate, he will be the President for another 4 years. The fact is that when people elect a President, they ought to rationalize in their mind that when the media is lambasting a VP candidate on the Republican side for not having any experience they should be very skeptical of the media not seeking out what actual accomplishments the Democratic nominee had other than writing 2 memoirs before he accomplished anything which to this point in time, the only thing he can add is that he destroyed America as a first rate power.

  17. Well yeh,the World has kind of gotten used to Barry not paying much attention to what’s going on,—-except if somebody like Arizona,or Wis., or New Jersey, or other people in America try to protect our country from Illegals or Terrorists, or run away Public Unions, etc.,then he really comes down hard.

  18. From now and till his last day in charge Obozo title will be AWOL-in-CHARGE.
The only thing that this person cares is a party no matter what the cause is. For example the next Saturday will be the party Quake and Nuclear disaster in Japan month. Shame on us that we have such a careless nobody in charge in the WH. World is in peril but a bunch of fill goods liberals just having parties. Where is so called media? The answer is they party together.

  19. Why is anyone surprised! This guy has ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE IN LEADERSHIP!
At least Jimmy Carter will be happy that he is no longer the worst US President!!

  20. You do know that this is no different than any other president, right? That it’s not just Obama, right? That presidents for the last 100 years have had to do/attend events that may seem mundane/expensive/whatever.

  21. Some of you people need a life. You don’t own this President. He can do what he feels like whenever he feels like it. There will always be things going on in the world and he can’t solve them all. You’ll find a reason to dislike him regardless. Go somewhere and sit on a live wire!

    1. TJ you are wrong, WE DO OWN the President. He is supposed to represent all of us not just the left/socialists. As for you, just take a broom stick handle and straighten out your back.

    2. tj: You are another “Obama Bootlicker” making excuses because the
con from Chicago conned YOU, and you STILL won’t admit the failure
      to the rest of America.

      1. “he can do what he feels like whenever he feels like it” That is a King, not a president. We are a country of laws and NOBODY is above our laws. Maybe you would feel better living in a monarchy. This country obviously is not to your taste.

  22. Shame on you Mr President .
All the problems that going on around world and here in USA and he worry about the basket ball bracket.
Just to show he was never ready to be president. He is still acting as child.

  23. i am a 50 something basketball player with 2 daughters of similar age to the president. I have no time to play or watch (except my daughter’s games) and i am not leader of the free world. I voted for him- my first Dem presidential vote- but would never again. He has no sense of seriousness and everything- i mean EVERYTHING- sounds like a speech. Hilary would have been much better.

  24. Obama behaves like he’s President for Life. Symtoms of it are in Wisconsin, his thugs don’t like to lose. Will they do the same in the U.S. Capitol building when we vote him (and them) OUT in 2012 ?

  25. The solution to Obama’s problems is to be honest. He should follow the ancient ‘Say what you mean and then do what you said’ maxim. It really is that simple.

Once he is honest, then if the majority voting population agrees with what he has done, then they may re-elect him. If the majority disagrees with what he has done, then they may or may not re-elect him, but he will leave with respect at having maintained his principles – even if the majority disagreed with him at the time.

It is troubling to see that Obama has given his public relations advisers so much authority in the White House, because they so not seed this authority if he simply meant and did what he said.

  26. As a state senator from Illinois, this individual was known to vote “Present” when the tough calls needed to be made. Well now he doesn’t have that luxury – he has to make those calls and it is painfully obvious that he lacks the spine to do so. 2012 can’t come soon enough.

  27. Hey he is Black Articulate and Clean just ask his VP.

The Guy makes Carter look competent and Nixon and Clinton like bastions of honesty.

Wonder if Jeremiah Wright, Farrkhan, Resko, Rashidi and Wm Ayers and Obama are having a million dolalr pool with our money. Must be some Stumuli or NEA money lying around.

Tell Obama Ohio State will win it all and I am a Michigan Fan.

  28. Disgusting, he can’t even be counted present anymore, how can he possibly have 43 percent of the US with him?Do we have that many flakes over here?Perhaps we should wrap him up in some frilly pretty wrapping paper and send him to China to lead there!

  29. most passive President since Eisenhower;disconnected;inept and socially inappropritate;has spent more time with leisure activities and parties than doing his job

  30. This guy is in so over his head it is pathetic. The sooner he gets UN-elected the better. He’d probably make a good talk show host, ala Maury Povich or Montel Williams.

  31. What a biased and over-exaggerated portrayal of the President. I don’t remember anybody complaining when George W. took months long vacations at his Texas ranch hideaway. Yet, somehow, when Obama watches a basketball game it is considered “partying” and a failure to complete his Presidential duties.

  32. So what’s the big surprise? Did anyone really expect fearless leader to make a difference in anything? On one hand it’s a good thing. If dip5h1t is busy with golf and basketball, it leaves him less opportunity to screw up the country more than he has. On the other, he has proved, as was foretold, to be an embarrassment of historic proportions.

  33. Focus, Mr. President, focus. Our country is collapsing, Japan has collapsing, and you appear so in love with yourself that you don’t have time to do your job.

What part of “public service” don’t you understand?
