In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

President Obama’s Trivial Pursuits

The Middle East is afire with rebellion, Japan is imploding from an earthquake, and the battle of the budget is on in the United States, but none of this seems to be deterring President Obama from a heavy schedule of childish distractions.

The newly installed tandem of White House Chief of Staff William Daley and Senior Adviser David Plouffe were supposed to impart a new sense of discipline and purpose to the White House. Instead, they are permitting him to showcase himself as a poorly focused leader who has his priorities backward.

This morning, as Japan’s nuclear crisis enters a potentially catastrophic phase, we are told that Obama is videotaping his NCAA tournament picks and that we’ll be able to tune into ESPN Wednesday to find out who he likes.

Saturday, he made his 61st outing to the golf course as president, and got back to the White House with just enough time for a quick shower before heading out to party with Washington’s elite journalists at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

With various urgencies swirling about him, Saturday’s weekly videotaped presidential address focusing on “Women’s History Month” seemed bizarrely out of touch.

Obama Friday took time out to honor the 2009-10 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. Thursday was a White House conference on bullying – not a bad idea perhaps, but not quite Leader of the Free World stuff either.

Obama appeared a little sleepy as he weighed in against the bullies, perhaps because he’d spent the night before partying with lawmakers as they took in a Chicago Bulls vs. Charlotte Bobcats game.

Meanwhile, the president has been studying for weeks whether to establish a No Fly Zone over Libya, delaying action while the point becomes increasingly moot as Qaddafi begins to defeat and slaughter his opponents. And lawmakers from both Parties are wondering why he seems to be AWOL in the deficit reduction debate.

The Libya indecision follows an inconsistent response to the protests that ousted former Egyptian President Mubarak and seemed to catch the White House off guard. The perfunctory response from the White House Monday to Saudi Arabia’s dispatch of troops to Bahrain suggested the administration wasn’t prepared for that one either.

But the fun stuff won’t end anytime soon. On Thursday, the Taoiseach of Ireland will be in town to help the president celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And then Friday it’s off to Brazil for the start of a three-country Latin American tour.

Oddly, he’ll be missing Carnival, which went down last week.

  2. There is indeed now of a residue of beggars and unionists of about 30 percent who are registered voters (and another 5 percent of fraudulent “voters”) who demand their freebies and so are actually impressed by the bankrupt and bankrupting ideas of a ProgSocialist debauch. No reality can ever deflect them from being tools of Trumka and Soros and Podesta.

Add to that are a scant 10 percent who are simply ignorant that there is anything basically unamerican and deconstructive about the Demmos, beause “they grew up that way” and watch Matthews/Couric/Whoopi for their opinions. That is the 45 percent of the problem in most of our elections.

  4. It’s looking more and more as if we have a spoiled adolescent in the White House who is also a lousy golfer and basketball player.

  5. You’re an idiot. Don’t you have other things to do besides attacking Obama for having one thing that makes him happy? Shouldn’t you be off polluting the waters and killing education funding.

  6. We have a Trojan Horse in the Whitehouse who was not raised in the United States and clearly has no loyalty to OUR country. To call him a traitor is to insinuate he was once on our side. Demented with the jealous rage of his Marxist father, he has taken advantage of those fools who would betray their country for false promises.

  7. Come on you guys, this is hollywood!! I can’t imagine the number or re-takes this starlet has had and will be allowed. It follows the support the news media gives to other wannabees. I can’t even stand to hear the man speak. Nasal is not the way to exhale words.

  8. For one thing ‘he’ does not have America’s priorities straight, another, he’s clueless of global affairs, He’s trifle, he’s a puppet of his advisers which means that he’s along for the ride only! What will happen when he fulfills his usefulness? He knows to much, what ‘bus’ will run over the Ex ovalarian? Will “they” try and pass the blame on to some poor fellow that has little skin tone?! You bet!

  10. I did vote for Obama and I am angry at his disturing and sometimes surreal lack of focus and in many cases, downright incompetence. But I want to make a point: I, and a lot of people like me, would have voted for John McCain had he not chosen as his running mate a scarily ignorant, pathological-lying, false-hunter-and-outdoorswoman who reveled in her ignorance and who plays the victim as well as the most liberal, left-wing whiner. I did not want to vote for the community organizer with little government experience and no pratcial experience, who hand’t served int he military, never had to make a payroll, and seems to be more interested in his own golf and college hoops. And the Dems need to apologize to W – of whom I’m not a fan – given that Obama has far outpaced him on trips to the kinks.

  12. Charlotte Cannon Dig A Huge Trench The Size Of A Small River..,Build A Resevoir Around The Entire Plant.., Bring The Ocean To Those spent Nuclear Rod’s And Flood Those Rods With Cool Water.., Until They Get Everyone Evacuated. Hand Out Radiation Suits To THose In The High Level Areas.., and evacuate the Japanese People, Load them up on Military Helicopters and get them out of there.., meanwhile on the other side of Japan load up the people in Commercial Aircrafts and Cruise Ships.., and get them out same time.., while letting the Nuclear Crises Specialists Handle The Crises.., instead of carrying water to the plant by helicopters, bring in the dosers and dig a small river size trench and bring the ocean to the plant through the small river.., dig a trenched out resevoir around the entire plant and flood those rods to cool them down. Meanwhile it will buy time to evacuate the Japanese people, hopefully before they have a full scale meltdown disaster event.., which looks to be happening anyways, slowely but surely. This is not rocket science folks.., flood those rods witht he ocean waters. First, Do No Harm! Thanks, Charlotte

  13. What do you expect from an idiot! He is not qualified to be president. What is the congress waiting for? He should be impeached!

If Obama is re-elected in 2012… you can say “good bye” to the USA. It may already be too late.

  14. Besides the fact that evry comment on this site seems to be a rehash of every other comment, most of the people commenting here seem to be idiots. I notice that the rare posts that defend Obama are met with comments like “keep drinking the kool-aid,” but never address what the commenters say. Here’s a couple of thoughts; We have already dispatched to Japan an aircraft carrier that can also serve as a hospital, along with several destroyers that are supporting the Japanese Defense Forces in rescue operations. We have also dispatched search and rescue teams that are right now searching through the rubble for survivors. The Japanese government is struggling to mount rescue operations. Why would any sane person think that we would be able to do more than the Japanese, from half a world away?

As for Libya, the solutions aren’t as clear cut as people here seem to think. What exactly do people think we dhould be doing? Enforcing a no-fly zone means shooting down Libyan planes, and act of war. Every time there’s an uprising in a country we don’t like, should we declare war on that country? Especially when there’s no real organized opposition waiting to take the reins of government? If the opposition fails, do we stay and topple Kaddafi on our own? Just how many mideast countries would you like to see us fighting in at the same time?

The real BS in this article and following comments is the whole “he cares more about his brackets” thing. If he was eating breakfast, you’d be saying “he cares more about his breakfast than what’s happening in Japan.” How many hours a day does he spend on the issues in Japan and Libya? You don’t know and neither do I. Do you really think the President, whether it’s Obama or Bush, can’t work whiole he’s traveling? Is he supposed to cancel everything on his schedule because there was a disaster in Japan? How much hour by hour involvement do you think the President has in rescue efforts? I don’t thnk any of you would be satisfied unless he put on a hard hat and started digging through the rubble.

And for the record, I didn’t vote for Obama, I wrote in Hillary. I’m not a huge fan of his, but these kind of attacks are just stupid.

  15. Didn’t Bush spend 32% of his time in office either at Camp David or his Crawford ranch? Almost 977 days, if I recall correctly.

And you’re moaning b/c Obama is taking some time to fill out a NCAA bracket?

Lord, you folks are morans if this is what you’re moaning and groaning about.

  19. Give the President of the U.S.A. some slack! After all, he can’t do everything –and that’s why he is supposed to have ‘staff: secretatries, assistants, press aides, media, etc. who are here to ‘help’. What about the V.P (Veep) can’t he do anything to help? This is a perfect time to see what the senior staff can do to ‘right the ship’, before the next election–2012!!

  21. Obozo’s lack of any sort of action or leadership involving Japan is nothing less than despicable. Now he is off to Rio? His spokesman says this is ok because this is “Japan’s crisis, not ours”,,, Had Bush said something like that they would have CRUCIFIED him. “Does he not know this is a GLOBAL economy,,, a GLOBAL society??”….

Considering the condemnation Bush received over Katrina, this pass for Obozo is just deplorable.

  22. When will Republicans have those job stimulus bills ready, like they promised during the elections?

Oh yeah I forgot – its more important to hassle gays and point fingers at everybody else.

Erm… how many days of vacation did George the Second take during his first four years? Thought so.

  26. I do not know HOW this imposter is able to get away with so much NON FUNCTIONAL to the Government, and play Mr. King of the Road games. His Main interests are not to make USA strong, helpful as needed, pull out where we do not belong, use the UN to develop a gun law, instead of the UN deciding who will help the middle east problems. Why do we have HIM or the UN? This guy seems to think that he is in full control of all situations, and all he is a man in a place he does not belong. God bless our freedom and our country, because NO BODY is doing anything to impeach this joker.

  27. Bonnie Alderman Powell

It is obvious to me that you are so very upset over the World Conditions. My heart goes out to you in Love. You know, I felt a lot like you do. Wanting to do something to help, but not knowing what I could do to make things better. Guess it’s human to want to blame somebody, anybody, for the mess this world is in. A friend of mine posted some of your words on facebook and agreed that he feels the same way. Words can be very Powerful! Anyway, if you ever need a shoulder to cry on or lean on, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. I really mean this. This is no Joke!! I Love You, Bonnie.

  28. Certainly the most inept President this once great country has been plagued with. He and his wife (with her $160,00,000 staff) have been nothing less than a total failer in everything they have been involved in. It is enough to sicken the strongest stomach. This is the only President I can truly say I have grown to dispise. I am so upset that I have grown to feel this way. I just don’t meet anyone that will admit they voted for this jug eared idiot. What an embarrassment he is.

  29. So President Obama spent a few minutes filling out a tournament bracket… get over it. President Bush also spent a lot of time on vacation and doing leisurely activites when he was president as well. Stop trying to humiliate this president any way you can. Grow up!!!

  30. Frankly, I think this article is downright petty. I thought it was ridiculous when people judged President Bush for his vacation days/personal interests during world crises, and I think it’s equally ridiculous to do the same to President Obama. People seem to forget that the President is a human being who needs downtime and stress relief, like we all do, even moreso since he has one of the most difficult jobs in the world. If he he waited for tragedy to stop striking before he commenced with a personal life, he would never have one.

  31. Notice too, that he has taken NO questions on the middle east in the last news conferences ! Are the reporters under orders not to ask ?? Interesting.
