In the history of mankind, many republics have risen, have flourished for a less or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state. TR

President Obama’s Trivial Pursuits

The Middle East is afire with rebellion, Japan is imploding from an earthquake, and the battle of the budget is on in the United States, but none of this seems to be deterring President Obama from a heavy schedule of childish distractions.

The newly installed tandem of White House Chief of Staff William Daley and Senior Adviser David Plouffe were supposed to impart a new sense of discipline and purpose to the White House. Instead, they are permitting him to showcase himself as a poorly focused leader who has his priorities backward.

This morning, as Japan’s nuclear crisis enters a potentially catastrophic phase, we are told that Obama is videotaping his NCAA tournament picks and that we’ll be able to tune into ESPN Wednesday to find out who he likes.

Saturday, he made his 61st outing to the golf course as president, and got back to the White House with just enough time for a quick shower before heading out to party with Washington’s elite journalists at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

With various urgencies swirling about him, Saturday’s weekly videotaped presidential address focusing on “Women’s History Month” seemed bizarrely out of touch.

Obama Friday took time out to honor the 2009-10 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. Thursday was a White House conference on bullying – not a bad idea perhaps, but not quite Leader of the Free World stuff either.

Obama appeared a little sleepy as he weighed in against the bullies, perhaps because he’d spent the night before partying with lawmakers as they took in a Chicago Bulls vs. Charlotte Bobcats game.

Meanwhile, the president has been studying for weeks whether to establish a No Fly Zone over Libya, delaying action while the point becomes increasingly moot as Qaddafi begins to defeat and slaughter his opponents. And lawmakers from both Parties are wondering why he seems to be AWOL in the deficit reduction debate.

The Libya indecision follows an inconsistent response to the protests that ousted former Egyptian President Mubarak and seemed to catch the White House off guard. The perfunctory response from the White House Monday to Saudi Arabia’s dispatch of troops to Bahrain suggested the administration wasn’t prepared for that one either.

But the fun stuff won’t end anytime soon. On Thursday, the Taoiseach of Ireland will be in town to help the president celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And then Friday it’s off to Brazil for the start of a three-country Latin American tour.

Oddly, he’ll be missing Carnival, which went down last week.

MR. President, what is your view on Libya? “Present”

How can we help Japan? “Present”

Will you help the budget process in congress? “Present”

There are further tensions in the Middle East, as well as the two wars. What is your plan? “Present”

Any last words? “I have instructed the DOJ to force New Dayton to lower their acceptance threshold so more Blacks can be hired as police officers. Now I am off to play golf.”

Thank you, Mr. President, you are a wonderful leader!

    1. Miss Palin, who is Ghaddafi?
      Raffiki’s friend from Lion King
Miss Palin, how does nuclear power work?
      Ask Smilin’ Joe Fission
Miss Palin, what’s your position on the Middle East?
I position it somewhere between the Far East and the Near East.

Everyone complains about Obama, but you were one senior-citizen moment away from having that idiot…

  2. This doesn’t surprise me at all. I think we saw thies coming a long time ago. This man is not fit to represent his home state let alone this country. His term can’t end fast enough! What will he be remembered for? As being the first black president. And that is it! What a waste!

  3. There are young Sailors working at sea day and night who do more work and accomplish more in a day than this wingnut does in a month. Pathetic. Why couldn’t anyone see this coming?

  4. 95 percent of blacks in america – and a majority of jews and single white females – still think he’s wonderful.

I guess we know which groups hate the country most, don’t we?

  5. This article is very timely and relevant; the president is distracted easily. He has organized himself into the presidency and now only wishes to extract the spoils of the office. It appears that his no wars campaign pledge has backed him into a corner concerning Libya. His statement to let the UN take the lead is mute based on their history of swift action; this will be over before action is taken. Just wait until the tape of his picks is released; there will be the jokes about “don’t air this until the tournament starts”. The spoils of the office. You know what they are and this administration is taking much more than they are giving. It may be a long time until 2012.

  6. Let’s face it. Obama voted “present” 130 times in the Illinois senate not because he had no opinion but simply so they would know he was there to draw a paycheck. The truth is he likely voted present simply because he was checking sports scores on his blackberry and didn’t hear the question. He is a disgrace to his office…heck, any office for that matter. I simply pray that America lasts until 2012 so we can learn from this colossal mistake…and that we never repeat it. *sigh*

  7. Keith Koffler, you my friend are an IDIOT! Is the President to blame for all that is wrong in the world because he takes an hour or two to relieve some stress? Now if the President didn’t visit with the great people of the United States and attend different functions, you would bitch about that also. Maybe you should direct your stories\reports to talk about something positive going on in this world instead of bringing everyone down with this worthless garbage I just wasted my time reading!

  8. Wouldn’t want world events to get in the way of his fun. No surprise that U.S. confidence in government is lowest in 35 years. Let’s see, 35 years ago peanut brain Carter was president, now is bball bama. Keep feeding that stereotype pres.

  9. This man is frighteningly incompetent and I am convinced he suffers from
Narcissistic Personality Disorder… I’ve noticed he can barely function without Biden at his side, which is even scarier. HOUSTON – WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

  11. Good to see that some of the journalists in the WH press corps actually provide honest analysis: The Emperor has no clothes.

  12. So why not have some fun. According to everyone who will weigh in he has no chance for reelection, everytime he makes a reasoned and thoughtful comment on an important issue he is beat down as a socialist and he is hated by the right and the left for not being left or right enough. If I was him I would give America the finger and enjoy the next two years. BUT, lets not assume that. he is doing what presidents do. Bush did the same things in times of crisis because the job of president does not end. If he had dropped everything to focus on Libya and Japan then the critics would say he is flexing too much imperial muscle. This is a president who cannot win. Early in his presidency he was too ambitious, now this. Make up your mind America! And if you think any of the Republican candidates will be any better you are just fooling yourself.

  14. His failure to help the Libyan freedom fighters criminal and I guess the Iranian protestors now know what kind of help they can expect from America, Zip, Nada, Nothing
    We’re so screwed…

  15. So what if he loves to travel on the taxpayers’ dimes…that’s what the electorate begged for in its Representative Democracy, and we should all embrace what we have. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about our debt holders, or their leaders who, frankly could help the Japanese tremendously if they weren’t so busy building nuclear subs like Tonka trucks. I guess all those are for peace, too, right? Keep lulled away in your deep sleep, America!

  16. And we expect anything different? With the exceptions of being over 35 what other qualifications did he have, Oh wait, he was also “born” in Hawaii, my bad. He has no experience in running a business, foreign or domestic policy, healthcare or for that matter any industry, and other that a few months as an absent Senator no Govt experience either. So with a resume like that what do you expect???

  17. Wow…’s great how you all drink the kool-aid together. Your man Bush gave us the worst economic implosion since the Great Depression, the worst deficits in US history and 2 wars to spend ourselves into oblivion, but you rail against Obama. He may not be as “great” as Bush, but maybe he’ll clean up some of the elephant dung that Bush left behind. But you guys can always rail…..your party has some of the best and brightest railers in America….Palin, Bachman, O’Donnell, just to name a few…..what a joke to read all of your garbage……

  18. Mixed feelings on the Libya No Fly Zone… I remember a handful of advisors in Vietnam turning into 50,000 dead Americans. If a couple NATO Aircraft were to go down, we could find ourselves in the middle of someone elses civil war. Historically we haven’t done well when we get involved in other peoples civil wars..

The Saudi’s, Jordonains and Egypt (Egypt might be a stretch at the moment) have modern US supplied Military Aircraft and American Trained Combat Pilots.. Let them play cop.

  19. What happened to the ‘Service’ aspect to Presidencial leadership. This Pesident is servicing himself and his empowerment to rule, not lead this country. We have a squatter in the White House. I’d hate to think where we’d be as Americans if anything close to what is happening in Japan were to break loose with this loser.

  20. I am truly happy that your leader is having a good time. I am still amazed that the liberal press took 4 years to question his actions. Had GW been so out of touch the press would have been blazing, but in everything The O gets a walk. Less than softball questions, and passes for real flubs; unending support for this ”leader”, the ”smartest man in any room”, is just sickening. If you want to know why he was elected, just look in the mirror. I have my problems with GW’s administration of this country, but, I knew he was for the America I used to know and love. What a freaking shame.

  21. Well! It’s about time that he got away from all the parties and golf and finally got down to the SERIOUS business of his re-election and the country! It’s all about ME! M!! ME!!!

  22. Actually I like the fact that we don’t see his face all over on the news trying to act like he knows what the heck he is doing.

  23. Does any find it unusual that relative the the last Presidential election, that their is very little campaigning taking place this close to the next Presidential election ?

  24. Jeff Schwandt …And the “Perfect Storm” hasn’t even started.
So you got several countries, including this one, about to go bankrupt, with China holding EVERYONES markers, you got riots all across the middle east, where EVERYONE buys their fuel and you got a small vital island nation going thru a massive earthquake, a murderous tsunami, a meltdown of their nuclear facilities and the pestilence of the unreachable dead beneath that pile of rubble hasn’t even started yet….yes, not a tripple slam, but a quadruple slap on those poor people…..and you say the “PERFECT STORM” hasn’t started yet? So if this is just the beginning, lets all put our head deep between our legs and kiss our butts good-bye! We are TOAST!!

  25. Nice to know that the people of Japan are pleading with the United States for help and our wonderful “leader” is too busy playing bracket-ball. Don’t hold your breath waiting Japan because after playing bracket-ball the teleprompter in chief has several more rounds of golf to attend to, a couple more White House parties (serving food that Michelle Obama wants to ban from all schools and from the menus of parents everywhere but it’s okay for them to gorge on it, and I’m sure there’s a couple more vacation hot spots for the family to see before they can be bothered with such piddly stuff as helping a nation and a friend recovered from a natural disaster. Can you hold on until November, 2012 Japan? Help will come then when America elects a real president.

  29. I think it is great that he runs off to the basketball game or spends time with trivial pursuits. That is less time that he spends screwing up the country.

  30. The man (and I use the word very loosely) is a travesty to this country and our system of government!! I must agree with others here, the name Nero DOES come to mind!

  31. Can we NOT yet oust this loser for dereliction of duty? If he were in the private sector, he’d have been fired long ago. If he were in the military, he’d be in the stockade.

  32. Patriotic Chicagolander

Knowing that “The One” has the full support of the Chicago Democrat Machine whose members include such “notables” as Bill Ayers, Farrakhan, Rev. Wright, the Marxist Democratic Socialists, gangbanger/”community organizer” “Gator” Bradley, Chicago ACORN, “Gitmo Nazis” Durbin, “The Fish” Emmanuel and too many other foul mouthed “Windy (City),” far left elitist radicals to mention, why are Barry’s actions a surprise?

  33. Thank you for being brave enough to state the obvious. Why isn’t the “mainstream” media reporting on this and other odd items that do make it seem as if Obama is spending his time as President enjoying the good life rather than leading the nation? Like when he sticks his nose into the WI public sector union debate (most likley at the very strong urging of his Union buddies back in Chitown)? I live in WI and voted for Gov. Scott Walker and the new more fiscally conservative legislature, . I am truly happy that they are keeping their campaign promises. The bused in Union protesters maybe reached 10k on 1 day; compared to the 1.37 MILLION voters who elected him, that is not representative of the will of the people of the state.

  34. what a perfect title: “trivial pursuits”! he’s channeling “back in jr. hi”!…perhaps more to the point, channeling nero, the infamous roman emperor, who fiddled while rome burned. the world is “burning” all around this fool & he’s fiddling, twiddling, diddling & partying!

  35. Chillout! March Madness is important stuff and so is golf. So relax and enjoy the cherry blossoms with Michelle (it is that time of year for spring vegetable planting too) and listen to Obama play enhancing music on his Neronian fiddle with the enchanting background hum of gov printing presses making money. What could be more idyllic?
