Oh no. Obama’s using the East Room for a political event again. First, the other day, we kicked off Rahm’s mayoral campaign there – technically the announcement that he was leaving as chief of staff – with George and Martha Washington looking down from their portraits in disgust.
Now this afternoon we have an East Room extravaganza for an obscure executive order I’ve never even seen such a thing. But of course, there’s an election coming. And the president, though he’s been appearing before African American and student audiences, hasn’t really done much to excite the Hispanic part of the base in recent weeks. And so, we have the grand signing of:
THE EXECUTIVE ORDER RENEWING THE WHITE HOUSE INITIATIVE ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE FOR HISPANICS
Yes, in case you were wondering when Obama might get to it, it’s signed, in a new and improved version. Something that the president normally would have done IN HIS PAJAMAS BEFORE GOING TO BED was elevated to an East Room event, complete with a mariachi band serenading revelers as they sauntered into the East Room.
Obama of course may have chosen to invite select Hispanics to the White House because appearing before a large, unfiltered group out in the hinterland might invite a show of discontent with the fact that HE HASN’T DONE ANYTHING FOR HISPANICS THAT HE SAID HE’D DO. Because he prioritized health reform instead.
And he won’t do any of it, either. With the GOP about to seize power, or a big share of it, comprehensive immigration reform is going nowhere. So he’s touting the more limited DREAM Act, which makes illegal youths legal if the enroll in the military for a couple of years or make it through college. And that bill fell four short of the sixty it needed this year.
But for today, it’s Fiesta! and Viva La EXECUTIVE ORDER RENEWING THE WHITE HOUSE INITIATIVE ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE FOR HISPANICS.
