Sessions Gives Sanctuary Cities a Final Warning

This is why President Trump needs to put aside his frustrations with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who handed the Russia “collusion” investigation over to a special prosecutor who will look into every crevice of the West Wing trying to find wrongdoing. Because Sessions is the best person to implement Trump’s immigration policy, which was a lynchpin of his campaign.

Sessions is trying to make local jurisdictions follow the rule of law instead of their “hearts,” which are actually in the wrong place. Immigration is a federal matter. A federal election was held in 2016, and Trump won it. As much as I would be tempted to allow sanctuary cities to secede from the nation, it’s probably better to keep the country together, as Abraham Lincoln once said. Or, you know, he said something like that.

From Fox News:

The Justice Department on Thursday delivered a “last chance” warning to cities suspected of having “sanctuary” policies to drop their resistance to federal immigration officials.

In a notice reviewed by Fox News, the DOJ announced that five jurisdictions “have preliminarily been found to have laws, policies, or practices that may violate” a key federal statute concerning cooperation with federal immigration officials.

They are: Chicago, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia and Cook County, Ill.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a written statement that sanctuary cities “adopt the view that the protection of criminal aliens is more important than the protection of law-abiding citizens and of the rule of law.”

Sessions Moves to Force Sanctuary Cities to Cooperate

This is what President Trump was elected to do. And this is what he appointed Attorney General Sessions to do. And Sessions has the determination to get it done.

From the Washington Times:

The Justice Department issued a new warning to sanctuary cities Tuesday, saying they must prove they fully cooperate with immigration agents in order to claim federal law enforcement grant money.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said jurisdictions that don’t allow federal agents into their prisons and jails, and that refuse to give at least 48 hours’ notice before releasing illegal immigrants, will lose money. “This is what the American people should be able to expect from their cities and states, and these long overdue requirements will help us take down MS-13 and other violent transnational gangs, and make our country safer,” he said.

The warning was attached to the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program, which doles out nearly $400 million in funds. Both the Obama and Trump administrations have concluded that federal law requires local law enforcement to cooperate on immigration enforcement in order to be eligible for these kinds of grants.
