As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

Trump Denies Telling Soldier’s Widow He “Signed Up” for It

President Trump today added a verbal denial to a tweet asserting that he did not tell the grieving wife of a slain soldier that the serviceman “must have known what he signed up for.”

“I didn’t say what that congresswoman said; didn’t say it all.  She knows it,” Trump said during remarks to reporters before a meeting with the Senate Finance Committee at the White House. “And she now is not saying it,” he said of the congresswoman, though she tweeted she was sticking by her remarks. “I did not say what she said, and I’d like her to make the statement again because I did not say what she said. I had a very nice conversation with the woman, with the wife who was — sounded like a lovely woman. Did not say what the congresswoman said, and most people aren’t too surprised to hear that.”

Meantime, the mother of the deceased soldier said Trump had disrespected her son.

According to the Washington Post:

The mother of a soldier killed in an ambush in Africa said Wednesday that President Trump “did disrespect my son” with remarks in a condolence telephone call.

Sgt. La David T. Johnson’s mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, told The Washington Post that she was present during the call from the White House on Tuesday to Johnson’s widow, Myeshia Johnson. Johnson’s mother also stood by an account of the call from Rep. Frederica S. Wilson (D-Fla.) that Trump told Johnson’s widow that her husband “must have known what he signed up for.”

“President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband,” Jones-Johnson said.

Trump lashed back. He denied Wilson’s account in a Twitter message Wednesday. He said he had “proof” that the exchange did not go as Wilson had described. Trump did not elaborate, but the claim again raised questions about whether the president tapes calls and conversations.

Wilson had said that the Johnson family was “astonished” by Trump’s remarks during the phone call, which Wilson said she heard via a speaker phone while riding in a car with the Johnson family.

Wilson told MSNBC on Wednesday that Johnson’s widow was shaken by the exchange.

“She was crying the whole time, and when she hung up the phone, she looked at me and said, ‘He didn’t even remember his name.’ That’s the hurting part.”

Wilson went on to say Trump “was almost like joking. He said, ‘Well, I guess you knew’ — something to the effect that ‘he knew what he was getting into when he signed up, but I guess it hurts anyway.’ You know, just matter-of-factly, that this is what happens, anyone who is signing up for military duty is signing up to die. That’s the way we interpreted it. It was horrible. It was insensitive. It was absolutely crazy, unnecessary. I was livid.”

“She was in tears. She was in tears. And she said, ‘He didn’t even remember his name.’”

  1. I don’t believe it one freaking bit, not one.
    Remember Trumps visit to Arlington?
Taking that little boys hand to visit the boys fathers grave.
I remember when an American was murdered by having his head cut off and Barry went golfing after saying a few words.
Not one bit do I believe it.

    • This is just another example of a Democrat trying to score political points, on the backs of dead American citizens. The Dems should be ashamed, but they’re incapable of admitting guilt or expressing shame.

  2. Get the Russian uranium story off the front page.Don’t be surprised of she tries to sue Trump for wrongful death.Doesn’t matter that she can’t win,it’ll use up the 24 hour news cycle for a while.

  3. From FLVoters.com, all redactions and emphasis mine:

Johnson, La David Terrence was born [redacted], is male, registered as Florida Democratic Party, residing at [redacted]. Florida voter ID number 118097145….The voter lists a mailing address and probably prefers you use it: [redacted] Fort Bragg NC 28310. This is the most recent information, from the Florida voter list as of 31 August 2017.

Registered Democrat. And oh, how convenient, that their Democrat congresscritter was available to validate the story for Pravda-on-the-Potomac.

I’m too young to be this cynical.

    • It doesn’t matter what political party Johnson voted for. What matters is that he proudly served our country. Sadly for his loved ones, he was killed performing that service. May he forever Rest In Peace. As for President Trump saying what he is accused of, I don’t believe it. I think Congresswoman Wilson will say anything to further the idea that Trump is incompetent, therefore he should be impeached.

      • As a civil and military matter, I agree.

But as a media and political matter, it’s relevant.

Per the Post, Wilson is backing up the story because she heard the entire conversation. How? Because it was on the speaker phone in the limousine, okay, that Wilson and Johnson were riding in.

And Wilson was getting interviewed about it on “The View” the very next day.

That doesn’t sound like a prepackaged political hit job?

  4. What if he DID say that? Every person in the military knows that a violent death by an adversary is possible. They certainly don’t hope for it or plan for it, but it is a reality.

He can be clumsy with words or phrases, but his heart is pure when it comes to our military ..and all of our first responders.
There is NO disrespect from this President. None.

    • Agreed. IF it was said….it was a compliment –
      If in a speach:
He knew what he signed up for… He knew that is life was in danger…He knew that protecting others and standing for our American principles could be dangerous. He knew he might die…AND he did it anyway. What a brave American hero.

I would not be surprised to find an Obama speech of similar tone out there….

  5. Um, anybody who’s seen how Trump handles himself at military and veteran’s events knows who’s telling the truth here.

And it ain’t the ‘grieving’ mother.

  6. Every other day the Dems and the MSM latch onto something else…just like during the campaign. Before they know it, he’ll be reelected and they’ll be gnashing their teeth for another four years.

They just don’t get it…and that’s fine by me.

  7. I don’t see what the problem with the comment is. He did “sign up for it.” He voluntarily enlisted. He voluntarily joined the Special Forces. The whole comment is being taken completely out of context. And the second part of Trump’s comment “but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt” isn’t being reported (surprise, surprise).
Trump should lay off the instant Twitter response to inane comments from idiot members of Congress. Let them get hoisted on their own petards.

  8. We had 8years of Obama constantly bashing Bush, and of course, Bush never rresponded or corrected any falsehoods. Trump is made of tougher stuff, he certainly cannot depend on the media to tell the truth.

  9. One other thing I noticed.

That call was made yesterday. How was it in The Washington Post, AND on “The View,” on such short notice?

“The View” is done live, in New York, at 11 AM. The story hit the Post website at 8:36 AM.

So let me get this straight. We’re supposed to believe that “The View” spotted this story less than three hours before they went on the air, LIVE, and they reached out to congresscritter Wilson, who just conveniently HAPPENED to be available for a live phone interview on such short notice, and THEN they got word to the studio to set up that interview, and cancel what HAD been scheduled, AND got all the prep materials out to the talent.

All that, in less than two and a half hours.

You know, pardon my French, but c’est des conneries, n’est ce pas?
