As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

Obama Vows Mars Mission Even as He Cuts NASA’s Budget

President Obama published an op-ed for CNN today declaring that we are going to Mars AND HE’S RESPONSIBLE, thank you very much.

The short piece, of course, includes ample self-references.

One of my earliest memories is sitting on my grandfather’s shoulders, waving a flag as our astronauts returned to Hawaii. This was years before we’d set foot on the moon. Decades before we’d land a rover on Mars . . .

The next step is to reach beyond the bounds of Earth’s orbit. I’m excited to announce that we are working with our commercial partners to build new habitats that can sustain and transport astronauts on long-duration missions in deep space. These missions will teach us how humans can live far from Earth — something we’ll need for the long journey to Mars . . .

Someday, I hope to hoist my own grandchildren onto my shoulders. We’ll still look to the stars in wonder, as humans have since the beginning of time. But instead of eagerly awaiting the return of our intrepid explorers, we’ll know that because of the choices we make now, they’ve gone to space not just to visit, but to stay — and in doing so, to make our lives better here on Earth.

CNN’s website is a model of Obama glorification. Look at this.

Obama Mars

Gotta hand it to Obama’s press shop. Talented group.

Of course, Obama forgets to mention in the piece that, memories of grandpa and astronauts being fished out of the sea near Hawaii aside, he proposed earlier this year significantly cutting the funding for space exploration so he could pursue all his various earthbound social welfare and environmental policies.

“This administration cannot continue to tout plans to send astronauts to Mars while strangling the programs that will take us there,” Texas Republican Rep. Lamar Smith, chairman of the House Science Committee, told The Daily Caller in February. “President Obama’s 2017 budget proposal shrinks our deep space exploration programs by more than $800 million. And the administration once more proposes cuts of more than $100 million to the Planetary Science accounts, which have previously funded missions like this past year’s Pluto flyby.”

That, even as the overall federal budget continued to increase. Universe Today reported:

This 2017 budget request amounts to almost $300 million less than the recently enacted NASA budget for 2016 and specifically stipulates deep funding cuts for deep space exploration programs involving both humans and robots, during President Obama’s final year in office.

The 2017 budget proposal would slash funding to the very programs designed to expand the frontiers of human knowledge and aimed at propelling humans outward to the Red Planet and robots to a Jovian moon that might be conducive to the formation of life. Absent sufficient and reliable funding to keep NASA’s exploration endeavors on track, further launch delays are almost certainly inevitable – thereby fraying American leadership in space and science.

This is clearly more Obama legacy garbage. The Great Man wants to be credited for stemming the rise of the oceans and, should that fail, finding another place for humans to live. CNN is only too happy to help him construct his ongoing self-hagiography.

No doubt this is another thing Obama watched, at least as a replay, at his grandfather’s side, thinking, Why not me?

  1. They should stamp President Barack Obama, Mars One on it. Insert said Obama and blast the damned thing off.

He can be the first Mars Man. And he can live there forever. King of Mars.

    • I’d contribute to that!

OT but interesting. I know many of you shun Facebook, and rightly so, but it’s convenient for me as Bernese Mountain Dog fancier with global friends. A Trump supporting friend looked up the pages of both The Donald and Crooked Hillary. First, he has over 11 million supporters, to her 6 million. Second, a bunch of us checked, and in every case, a greater number of our friends were Trumpists. Based on the rabid comments of the Libs on any pro Trump, post, one could think she had greater Facebbok support than she does. Also, 6 of my pro-Clinton friends are foreigners–Swedish and Danish mostly–who hopefully (!) won’t vote. I just thought it was interesting, and it gives me a little hope.

      • OT

Paul Ryan is a (insert) for not supporting the candidate of his party…. 4 years ago when we were not happy with the POTUS or VP or both…..but support we did.

        No honor.

    • HA!

I think also that in the official Mooch Garden there is a compost pile with his name on it as well. I have some suggestions for the pile’s plaque if one is not yet erected. I don’t know about the dedication but the plaque could be in the shape of something less fortunate socialist nations do not have. Say, a roll of toilet paper.

I could do more, but best left as is.

  2. A reminder:

“NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his “foremost” mission as the head of America’s space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world.
Though international diplomacy would seem well outside NASA’s orbit, Bolden said in an interview with Al Jazeera that strengthening those ties was among the top tasks President Obama assigned him. He said better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel.”

Soooo, does this mean that MrObama plans on colonizing Mars with Muslims?

  3. Once again we are reminded of Obama’s playbook. Never mind what he says, because he lies about everything all the time. But watch what he does very carefully. Watch where he sets the land mines, the flash bombs, the trip wires.

      • Our problem is that if they corrupt the electoral college we can’t do anything about it.

They have far too much power and influence over the system.

Us peons have to suck it up and take it.

We elected what we thought was going to be a congress that would stop Obama’s liberal policies.
They told us that they would, remember?

The American People are tired of the lies.

Now we have found a man that says that he will make America great again and they are doing everything they can to stop him.

We need term limits in congress.
        This is becoming beyond ridiculous.

        • I am a Happy Warrior. I am voting for Trump.

If he does not win, I will become a member of the almost inevitable newly formed party of Americans. Done with the Republicans and the Democrats.

  4. Interesting, but not in the least surprising:

“Astroturf ‘Outrage Machine’ of Paid Trolls Floods Social Media to Counteract Negative News About Hillary Clinton”

    https://stream.org/astroturf-outrage-machine-of-paid-trolls-floods-social-media-to-counteract-negative-news-about-hillary-clinton/

    From the story:

“It (using paid pro-Clinton trolls) is meant to appear to be coming organically from people and their social media networks in a groundswell of activism, when in fact it is highly paid and highly tactical.” He went on, “That is what the Clinton campaign has always been about. It runs the risk of being exactly what their opponents accuse them of being: a campaign that appears to be populist but is a smokescreen that is paid and brought to you by lifetime political operatives and high-level consultants.”

  5. A last attempt to imitate the Kennedys. Now, no matter when we go to Mars, the record will say, “Barack Obama was the one who set this goal for America.” Puke.
