Kristol Courting Romney to Make Independent Bid

From the Washington Post:

In spite of his insistence that he will not run, Mitt Romney is being courted this week by a leading conservative commentator to reconsider and jump into the volatile 2016 presidential race as an independent candidate.

William Kristol, the longtime editor of the Weekly Standard magazine and a leading voice on the right, met privately with the 2012 nominee on Thursday afternoon to discuss the possibility of launching an independent bid, potentially with Romney as its standard-bearer.

I’m not so sure Romney couldn’t win, given the number of disaffected Democrats and Republicans, though of course it’s unlikely. And, that he was a previous GOP nominee would give many prominent Republicans an excuse to back him over Trump.

Romney

I am pretty sure Romney would prevent Trump from winning, siphoning off more votes from the GOP nominee than the Democrat. Though if Romney won a few states and nobody received a majority in the Electoral College, the House of Representatives decides, and it would likely support the GOP nominee. I think.

  1. Poor Billy Kristol. Romney? Why not Wendell Willkie? He’d be available too if he weren’t so dead. Billy’s as clueless as was his father, Irving Kristol. Does he have no friends who can explain to him what is happening politically? Not even one?

    • The Weekly Standard looks more and more like just a money front for him and his buddies to get free meals at their symposiums and take a couple of free cruises a year.
But I will give them credit for one thing: At least TWS isn’t sucking off the government teet as a non-profit tax exempt like NRO. It doesn’t get much lower than claiming to be “principled conservatives” while hiding under a 501 C 3 tax umbrella. Now THAT is hypocrisy.

  2. Hillary just subscribed to The Weekly Standard, as they might as well be shilling for her…

Wake up Mr Kristol, this is not your old man’s GOP any more..
    H

    • Krystol’s “old man” Irving(Krystol)was the creator of the neocon movement in the United States that endorse a liberal social policy ( abortion and gay marriage) and an aggressive, internationalist foreign policy that uses American boys-and girls-as cannon fodder for unending senseless wars against sovereign nations that don’t threaten America or it’s interests.
By the way, Irving Krystol (nee Bernstein)was a Bolshevik communist and Trotskyite and his son Bill has only given his assent to his father’s legacy and policy positions.

    • Well, the idea would be to throw the election into the House–so he could be pounded and still do that…Still, I think it’s a long long long shot.

    • All this “principled conservative” crap is sickening.
When the Founders met in 1776 there’s no record of them whining “Bbbbut Mr. Jefferson, Mr. Franklin, Mr. Adams, we can’t stand on principle. It would shut down trade and the King will never sign our little Declaration so what’s the point. We must pass what we can and wait till later.”
That is the attitude of the GOP leadership since 2010 and it is exactly that attitude that has caused them to now have to face the messenger of their betrayal, one Donald J. Trump.

  3. The guy was a horrible candidate who couldn’t win when he ran as the GOP nominee. Why in the hell does anyone think he could win as an independent?

  4. Leave it to the inner circle of politics to circumvent the will of the ppl. Since Trump doesn’t seem willing to play the game that Republicans and Democrats thrive at, here comes the call for the independent candidate. If Romney wanted to be President, he would have tried harder instead of rolling over and going through the motions. This is why ppl are angry and upset. What a joke.

    • I have been so pissed at “Romney 2012” etc. for NEVER going after “Barack Hussein Obama” and his ‘basic qualifications’ to ever be “Pres. of the U.S.”…

  5. Romney running AGAIN,?
That would be akin tons prize fighter, getting knocked out in the first round, getting up after the 10 count and a heavy dose of smelling salts, getting into a boxing and telling the ref, I’ll get him this time.

  6. Get real. What are these dc attorneys drinking? Gary johnson was on cavuto. He was # 1 google after cruz dropped out. He said he could not get on all 50 states as a liberterian no matter what at this late date. Not happening. Give it up the voters have spoken.

    • …I like drinking in DC ;-)
(just sucks they have an early last call & the Metro doesn’t run late/post “last call”)

  7. Romney? Why not John McCain or Bob Dole for that matter? I think the GOP just can’t feel good unless they are playing the roll of LOSER.

  8. That might be the most bombastic display of sound and fury, signifying nothing, to come from a Harvard alum since Brian Tyler’s score for the last Ninja Turtles movie.

  9. This guy is out of his f’ing mind. Somebody get a net!!

Giving him a platform to spew this insanity is dangerous.

    • Romney has ZERO chance of succeeding. The only possible effect of his involvement would be to increase the odds of Hillary winning.
