Fellow prisoner: Freddie Gray was trying to injure self . . . A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that he “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post.
Protests spreading . . . Protesters marched against police violence in cities from New York to Denver on Wednesday, and a large demonstration in Baltimore ended peacefully two days after rioting over the death of a black man injured in police custody. Reuters
Protestors back in Ferguson . . . Protesters returned to Ferguson on Wednesday night, a day after looting, fires and gunfire broke out there during demonstrations over the death of a black man who died of spinal injuries after his arrest by Baltimore police. Associated Press
Baltimore protestors being released without charges . . . By Wednesday as officers struggled to complete the paperwork needed to charge more than 100 people who had been detained since the unrest began, officials began releasing most of them. Washington Post
Source: Baltimore mayor ordered police to stand down . . . Despite a firm denial by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, a senior law enforcement source charges that she gave an order for police to stand down as riots broke out Monday night, raising more questions about whether some of the violence and looting could have been prevented. U.S. economy stalls . . . If anyone has any questions about the decrepitude of the Obama economy and the “recovery” that never seems to get to “fully recovered,” it was answered today as the Commerce Department announced that GDP had expanded by 0.2 percent during the first three months of the year – that is, growth basically stopped. This comes off a lousy 2.2 percent increase in the fourth quarter of last year, suggesting the slowdown is endemic and not due to the bad winter – i.e. increased cooling due to global warming – or the alignment of the planets, George W. Bush, the Tea Party, or the Nixon administration.White House Dossier
Fed downgrades outlook . . . The Federal Reserve downgraded its view of the U.S. labor market and economy on Wednesday in a policy statement that suggested the central bank may have to wait until at least the third quarter to begin raising interest rates. Reuters

White House: Special ops in Texas won’t be incognito . . . When hundreds of U.S. Special Operations Forces descend on Texas (and six other states) for an eight-week training mission in July, they will not be “incognito,” nor will they threaten the constitutional rights or civil liberties of Americans, the White House said on Wednesday. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) this week directed the Texas State Guard to monitor the U.S. military exercise taking place in his state from July through September, “to ensure that Texas communities remain safe,” he said. Taking U.S. and Russian missiles off high alert could keep a possible cyberattack from starting a nuclear war, a former commander of U.S. nuclear forces says, but neither country appears willing to increase the lead-time to prepare the weapons for launch. FBI aided Weinstein ransom payment . . . The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2012 helped facilitate a ransom payment from the family of American hostage Warren Weinstein to al Qaeda in an unsuccessful attempt to get him released, the Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday. Reuters
Air Force watching falling Russian satellite . . . The Air Force is watching an out-of-control Russian satellite tumbling toward earth that could reenter the atmosphere with some 3,000 pounds of toxic fuel within two weeks. Washington Free Beacon
