The Justice Department today said it will seek the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Islamist who is accused of bombing the Boston Marathon last year, killing three and wounding more than 200.
This is quite a commendable action by Holder, who is personally against the death penalty. Holder said in a statement:
After consideration of the relevant facts, the applicable regulations and the submissions made by the defendant’s counsel, I have determined that the United States will seek the death penalty in this matter. The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision.
Well, yes, that’s certainly correct. I’m pleasantly surprised Holder put aside his own views on capital punishment to pursue the penalty an overwhelming majority of Americans believe Tsarnaev deserves.
Maybe they should amputate one of Tsarnaev’s legs first. No, that would be cruel and unusual. Well, unusual, at least.
