The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York today announced the indictment of Dinesh D’Souza, a veteran conservative commentator who recently produced a book and a movie critical of President Obama.
D’Souza is charged with campaign finance violations. His 2012 movie, “2016: Obama’s America” and 2010 book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage” posited that Obama’s politics derive from the anti-Western ideas of his father.
The U.S. attorney, Preet Bharara, is a politically connected Obama appointee who is being talked about as a potential replacement for Attorney General Eric Holder, assuming Holder ever resigns. Before his appointment, Bharara worked for Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and helped lead the Senate Judiciary Committee investigation into the controversial firing of U.S. attorneys by the Bush administration.
Bharara’s office made sure to note that “the Indictment is the result of a routine review by the FBI of campaign filings with the FEC.”
But given this administration’s track record, it’s hard not to wonder if the targeting of D’Souza was anything but routine.
