WSJ: Uh Oh. Obamacare Enrollees Older Than Expected

The Wall Street Journal has a piece I thought you would want to see today – it’s behind their paywall – reporting that those who have bought insurance under Obamacare so far are much older than expected.

This is very very bad news for Obamacare, because young people who will pay for insurance but won’t need health care services that cost insurers cash money are ESSENTIAL for Obamacare work. Otherwise, the insurance companies lose money on older, sicker enrollees and must either force youngsters to sign up at gunpoint or raise prices for everyone.

Or go out of business.

That is, liberal geniuses have concocted a special scheme called Obamacare that seeks to make Americans do what Lefties know is best but which also happens to be against people’s self-interest. It is a perfect example of liberals trying to mold the square peg of human behavior into the round hole of their utopian fantasies.

The article cites numerous examples of money-losing demographics:

The average enrollee age at Priority Health, a Michigan insurer, has ticked up to age 51 for newcomers, from about 41 years old for plans offered for the current year, said Joan Budden, chief marketing officer. Arise Health Plan, Wisconsin’s largest nonprofit insurer, said more than half its 150 signees are over 50, a higher proportion than expected, while declining to be specific on its target age . . .

At a health-law education event in North Carolina last week, more than 100 people, mostly in their 40s and 50s, came. “I actually didn’t see a single young person,” said Liz Gallops, an insurance agent from Raleigh, N.C., who attended.

Insurers are hoping for an average enrollee age of about 40.

Part of the skewing is due to the dysfunctional website, because those who need health insurance the most are more likely to keep hitting “enter” until something works. But even in states running their own exchanges, where things have been smoother, it’s the elders and not their grandkids who are signing up.

In states that are running their own marketplaces and have seen smoother rollouts, officials are now also reporting a similar phenomenon, suggesting the economics of the law play a role, too. In Connecticut and Kentucky, which have enrolled more than 4,000 people each in private health plans so far, the largest segments of enrollees in new commercial health-law plans are over age 55, much older than industry actuaries say they had anticipated.

What’s more, higher proportions of younger people are simply signing up for Medicaid, putting them on the public dole instead of assisting with insurers’ bottom lines.

Once insurers start raising premiums, Democrats will drag them before congressional committees and accuse them of gauging consumers. And once they start going out of business, the march toward a single-payer system – that is, a nationalized health insurance program – will be on.

It’s what most liberals, likely including President Obama, are seeking as the cornerstone of our future Workers’ Paradise.

So sing with me, if you will, the Internationale, as we look forward to the day when we are One Nation, Under God, and Under Obamacare. And, if necessary, Under Martial Law.

Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we’ll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They’ll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We’ll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E’er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we’ll strike while the iron is hot.

Well stated, Mr. Koffler. Reminicient of Adam Smith, who saw this guy coming a quarter-Milleneum ago…

“The man of system…is apt to be very wise in his own conceit; and is often so enamoured with the supposed beauty of his own ideal plan of government, that he cannot suffer the smallest deviation from any part of it… He seems to imagine that he can arrange the different members of a great society with as much ease as the hand arranges the different pieces upon a chess-board. He does not consider that in the great chess-board of human society, every single piece has a principle of motion of its own, altogether different from that which the legislature might choose to impress upon it.

If THAT don’t describe our Hopey…

    And THIS one calls Obama out directly;

“The statesman who should attempt to direct private people in what manner they ought to employ their capitals, would not only load himself with a most unnecessary attention, but assume an authority which could safely be trusted, not only to no single person, but to no council or senate whatever, and which would nowhere be so dangerous as in the hands of a man who had folly and presumption enough to fancy himself fit to exercise it.

Pretty GOOD for a guy that died in 1790, nicht wahr?

Oh, wait, he’s a dead White guy, we don’t have to listen to HIM…

Really, though, that’s what’s the MOST distressing about THIS President; not that he’s doing something NEW, but that NONE of it is new! The Devil always repeats, ’tis said, and that’s the case here…That’s why Adam Smith can describe him so precisely; why it ALWAYS seems like we’ve heard his programs, ideas, ways of “governing” before, why the MOST RECENT ideas Obama has came directly from the 1970’s – IT’S NOT NEW! IT’S BEEN TRIED AND FAILED, IN MANY PLACES AND MANY TIMES! THIS WON’T BE ANY DIFFERENT!

Sorry about shouting, but it does get tiresome, and the LIV’s continue to not listen. Those who don’t remember history are doomed to repeat it, it’s been wisely said; but, it seems that even when some DO remember history, we are doomed to repeat it because MORE people do NOT…

  2. We need to be careful about falling into a trap of identifying how many people enrolled through Obamacare.

The statistics need to be delineated between those who had insurance before Obamacare and are now on the exchange and those who didn’t have insurance before Obamacare and are now on the exchange.

Because the measure of success is how many newly insured they are.

At every turn, the administration and insurers should be pressed to present enrollment numbers in that way.

      • Not worth much, but I heard somewhere that 17% of those previously uninsured had if not enrolled then signed on. Don’t know how many went automatically to the taxpayer funded medicaid.

Pretty much the fact that the verification for those who qualify for subsidies will come later speaks to the moth eaten fabric of this whole scam anyway.

  3. Before I get all weepy thinking about the sad fate of the devilish health insurance companies, I do remember that the Feds (all of us) have promised to reimburse those devils for (1) subsidies to low income clients and (2) the taxes that the uninsured will pay at the end of the year will cover some of their losses.
The insurance gurus struck a deal with the Obama administration, helped draft some of the regulations and is as complicit in this destruction of our health care system as are the Dems who voted for something they hadn’t read, nor understood.

It’s really difficult to discuss the workings of this mess when we don’t actually have anything to refer to or check for accuracy. Oh, sure, we can order a copy of the ACA and spend hours trying to decipher the convoluted regulations, if we have the stamina. Also, there doesn’t seem to be any news or information outlet that has the information on who, what, when and how much is involved here.

re: The WSJ boo-hooing about the older clients signing up for new health insurance, well….what did they expect?
The older client is more mature, knows that a health disaster is a given, and wants to insure that they won’t lose everything for a single hospitalized illness.
The young, the young&fit, have no assets to protect, believe that some anonymous mom&dad will take care of everything, and besides, they’re sure they will always be healthy and are not going to get sick or come down with some terrible disease.

IMO, single-payer health care can’t work until the healthcare providers become government employees. That means that doctors, nurses, hospitals and healthcare clinics must be part of the federal government, either as employees or contract facilities. Indentured slavery and government takeover comes to mind with that scenerio.
    Not going to happen, imo.

    • Some of these so-called approved plans where you pay 50% are going to wipe people out, too–even the 20%ers. Or the ones with a $10K deductible the surgeon will want upfront before your bypass. In CA, the companies–speaking of them–are hanging back waiting until the sick people sign up with their competitors and then they will come in in a year or more and scoop up the athletic youngsters. This is calculated–they are not idiots and certainly not saints. Like a said, this whole magilla is like pulling out the bottom block in Zenga–let’s see what happens….aw….i

  4. There’s another ‘young’ demographic that is being totally ignored – 15-20m illegals. I read somewhere that most of them are under 30. Why aren’t we hearing from LaRaza and all the hispanic out-reach groups? They’re chaining themselves to fences demading amnesty, but not a word about Obamacare. Do they know something we don’t know? Are they getting Medicaid under the table….or are they just going to continue driving the ER’s into bankruptcy.

    • If illegals aren’t required to buy ins. or pay a fine, why not charge them a hefty ‘squatter’s fee’? Obama has ordered ‘no deportations’. Why should they get a free ride? Very few of them pay taxes (undergrouind economy) and most of them avail themselves of various forms of subsistance, i.e. Auntie Z and Uncle Omar. We wouldn’t be in this mess if we enforced the existing Federal immigration laws!!!

    • Little secret–ERs depend on insured people as a profit center–some doctors will SEND you to the ER. I have had it happen many times. On weekends, when they don’t have one-day appts left or even available at all, when it sounds like something serious…etc. The ERs would be full even with an insured population–in fact, they will think up new ways to get people to come–such as little urgent care divisions, etc.

      • Interesting. A few nights ago my daughter cut her finger chopping onions- drove to the ER – got 3 stitches. Cost $2000. Good thing she still has employer insurance!

        • For a while… When I had my last eye infection, I would not let them sew it shut (fool me once) and they put in a so-called bandage contact–took one sec…On the EOB, it was listed as a $1650 procedure–would people paying 50% after the deducible pay half of THAT?

    • Here in AZ, before our state made being illegal illegal, our ER rooms were packed, with additional people waiting outside in lines.
Now, our ER’s are back to normal usage.

Who knows what California with their 50% illegal population is doing for healthcare. Good luck there, CA.

  5. That 50ish group–pre-Medicare–is a problem age–they have trouble getting even a real bad apple–not just those fake bad apples being scorned. Yes, this is a poison pill in the law. Maybe the admin vaguely figured all this was a win-win–if it bombed, single payer would look good, but I still have trouble believing they could make it bomb this big on purpose.

  6. I’m not seeing how this presents a problem to the Obama Administration. It is the insurance companies that need younger people to enroll – not the government. It is insurers that offer these policies. They will be the ones hurt by having more higher risk people join while lower risk younger people opt out.

This is all part of the grand design to have insurance companies run out of business. Insurers made a deal with the devil back in 2010, and now they will reap the consequences of that deal. As for the Obama government, they have a printing press. So they really have no concern with how much it will cost them. They ran up more than $400 billion in deficit spending last month alone without batting an eye.

  7. What’s going on elsewhere while our eyes are focused on this Charlie Foxtrot? If FCMABBHO knew how bad this would be, I wouldn’t put it past him to have all kinds of mischief to do while the MFM are busy with this. Friday, he signed some EO’s about so-called climate change. (Whatever happened to AGW?) Is Iran about to test a nuke?

    • I posted on the EO’s–we need to look into that more. Climate whatever is not one of my subjects. Iran–one month from a bomb…really? I don’t know how to take that one.
