As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

Shutdown Chances Grow as GOP Stands Ground

UPDATE: The House approved the legislation  231-192, with only two Republicans opposing and two Democrats joining Republicans to pass it. The bill now goes to the Senate, which is not expected to convene until Monday.

Original story:

Bowing to the wishes of conservatives, Speaker John Boehner and the House GOP leadership team have decided to propose a bill to fund the government that would include a one-year delay of Obamacare, increasing the likelihood of a government shutdown.

The legislation, which could pass today, would also permanently repeal an unpopular medical device tax used to help fund the law.

With the Senate unlikely to pass the measure and Obama certain to veto it, the bill would lead to a government shutdown if nothing else is done. But lawmakers have until Monday night, when funding runs out, to figure something out.

Republicans are expected to unite behind the bill.

  1. This constant last minute showdown only cements in the minds of millions of Americans the Republican Party is dead. Because there is no leadership in the party, and it seems clear with each passing year the Republicans support big government as much as the Democrats, the train wreck called Obamacare is going to be a reality.

  2. It would be interesting if an open forum with the on the ground survivors of Benghazi were a requirement here. What if Obama were charged with “shutting down the government transparency”?

Put that shoe on the other foot. “What difference at this point does it make”? It would be enlightening to find out.

  3. The meandering dickheads that are currently running around on the floor of congress are like a bunch of rats that have rejected the advice of the people that feed them.
The elitist philosophy of this congress and this administration is obvious to anybody paying attention.
In 2014, we need to take the knees out from under them.

    • Just the knees?

I’m originally from Chicago, and I vote that we start at the feet with a 9mm round, and keep working our way up on each joint until they can no longer do anything but lie there writhing in pain, screaming that they are done.

The Tea Party needs to stop the playing nice with the GOP and Dems, and get their own operatives working around the clock to find the dirt and skeletons that these bastards all have in their closets. Find the dirt, and USE it.

You wanna know how to get Obama? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the “Chicago way”! And that’s how you get Obama. Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that? (Apologies to Sean Connery).

This is all metaphorical of course. DO NOT need men in suits showing up at the house.

  4. Well, well, well. The plot thickens. The game is afoot. and all that.

It looks like we’ll see if MrO’s domestic red-line, “..I will not negotiate….” was drawn with a water-based marker or permanent ink.

  5. Throw it back on BHO and let him squawk. Republicans need only to hammer whose fault it is. Let BHO squawk. The wheel that squeaks the loudest gets replaced. Let democrats remember that.

    • “Republicans need only to hammer whose fault it is.” As though they have ever succeeded in doing so. Truthfully, how many people do you think are going to blame the Democrats if the government shuts down?

  6. It’d be a shame if the Republicans are blamed, when those who vote don’t see the cataclysm the health bill will be when it hits them. Just recently, I read how so many Latinos are in favor of this particular bill. If they’re Univision watchers, they get a “colored” version of the benefits of this new bill, plus Obama’s push for immigration “reform.”

    • Latinos are especially excited about Obamacare. Most of the ‘clinicas’ here in L.A. County force the uninsured to pay up front before they see a doctor. Ironically, most of them manage to come up with the $$$ b/c the services provided are markedly less expensive than American doctors. Wait until Latinos discover that their ‘free’ Obamacare is going to cost them more than the ‘clinicas’!

  7. If the government shuts down Oct. 1 commissaries stateside will be closed starting Oct. 2, according to officials with the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA).

They will be open Oct. 1, the first official day of the shutdown, so that they can offload perishable foods, they said.

If the shutdown extends into mid-October servicemembers will not receive a mid-month paycheck, but will instead be given “back pay” after funding is passed by Congress and signed by President Barrack Obama. Many civilian workers will be also be temporarily furloughed and will not receive back pay.

If a shutdown occurs on-base schools and child care centers will remain open and Exchanges will continue to operate as well as most services at on-base hospitals. MWR programs, however, would likely halt.

    • That is pure, unadulterated fear mongering. If any of that really happens, it will be because the commander-in-chief of the military ordered it. I worked for the federal government at a military hospital during the 1995 shutdown. The military was still paid; the hospitals, daycares, and commissaries were still open; even the non-essential government employees who were furloughed got a nice paid vacation. Believe me when I say none of those closures will occur unless Obama wants to punish the military and their families because Congress won’t capitulate to his demands.

  8. For grins and giggles, follow the Virginia Governor’s race which is a national bellwether for 2014, like it was for 2010. It’s ugly, mean and full of Obotsh*t. Corporate media is out to destroy the Republican. Why? Cuccinelli was the first state AG to challenge Obamacare as unconstitutional. He must be destroyed ! The Dem, Terry McAuliffe is wiping the floor with mega donations and high poll numbers. He’s less qualified to be a governor than Obama was to be President.

The GOP is nowhere to be found in Virginia right now, they want McAuliffe to win.

    • Same thing is happening in the New Jersey special election for US Senate. The GOP and NRSC has shown Steve Lonegan the back of their hand. It’s almost like they don’t want to win elections if a conservative is running for the office.

    • Denise, I live in VA and I don’t want McAuliffe to win! The problem is that the women still have that vag probe issue to think about and the men that want McAuliffe should maybe have that probe waved in front of them! Good grief. McAuliffe is about as dirty as they come – fits right in with the O culture. In fact, he probably taught the culture to most of them when he was the Chair of the DNC. I worked at the WH when his wife had a couple of their kids. He left her in labor to attend a fundraiser – and then again, on the way home from the hospital with the second child born around that, he made her and the baby wait in the car while he went to yet another fundraiser. The gossip in the halls were all about how brazen he was. Can you imagine? If he didn’t care enough about his wife and newborn children, he is never going to care about VA.

      • I didn’t like McAuliffe back when I was an activist Dem. He was like the “Fredo” of the party. Just a dumb knob, photogenic talking head for the DNC. He didn’t even win the Dem primary for Gov in 2009, Va Dems just selected him this year, no primary. It’s crazier than I ever remember Va politics ever. Something’s up, and not in a good way.

  9. I am no big fan of squish Republicans and I do wish this delay included an elimination of the Congressional exemption. That said, let’s put the blame squarely where it belongs. On the Democrats whose knee jerk response is all or nothing. Screw that. Screw them. Shut it down. Try and implement Obamcare as it is. And the people will see it for what it is.
No matter what Republlcans — squish or conservatives do — the media will work it so that the people blame them anyway. The American people and the American MSM signed up for this and this man Obama. I am tired of trying to save them from themselves. The country is strong enough to play this out.

  10. Repubs are just plain stupid. Tie the money to a required immediate complete implementation of Obamacare. Make clear that all wavers, exemptions, and the like are ILLEGAL. Make the poisoners eat their own swill!

  11. From The Washington Post:
    Obama golfed as Congress debated

On Saturday, as the shutdown drama played out on Capitol Hill, President Obama played golf at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.

According to published reports, the White House said that Obama’s partners were two presidential staff members, Joe Paulsen and Marvin Nicholson, and Nicholson’s brother, Walter.

  12. OT: sort of
A phone call from someone named “Nick” asking if I heard about Obamacare. “Nick” had such a bad accent I asked where he lived. He said, “California, but I wasn’t grown there”.
    click.

      • Just thinking here.
I paid into Medicare for 40+ years, then find out it doesn’t cover diddly, so I have to ‘buy’ Part B, C, and D and that still doesn’t cut it. Regardless of what a lot of youngsters believe, Medicare is not “free”, unlike Medicaide that is “free”.

I think I’d be better off with some of that Obamacare if I can get a subsidy to help pay the premiums. If “Nick” calls back, it might be wise for me to play nice and see if I can get some of that ‘bamacare subsidy.
