As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

“I think this should work. We’ll reach a deal with Assad on giving up his chemical weapons while we’re arming the rebels who are trying to kill him.”

– Barack Obama

    • Putin, Assad, and all the rebels did not learn how to win an argument or a war by sitting in an IvyLeague dorm room, or in some 1%er’s drawing room. We can’t be sure what’s in their hearts and minds, butt it isn’t sitting at a table working on something they all agree upon.
The one thing we can be sure of is that they all have a common enemy, us/America/Obama.

    • That is a very interesting but disturbing piece. It seems well within the borders of plausibility. I’ve always thought that Al Zawahiri was the brains behind Al Qaeda. Bin Laden was the poster boy and the original moneybag.

      • There is an increasing amount of info. I try and be careful but there are biases and loyalties. In general I think PJM is pretty conservative and pro Israel.

My concern is push come to shove we have a reluctant warrior and a complex theater.

    • I read that piece too. There is so much at stake right now so information, desinformation, propaganda and lies fly around. Personally I believe that there is a lot of desinformation in that text, it smells of smearing, it smells like anti Assad propaganda. Someone realized what a PRcoup that Putin post was and then….By the way, I heard Trump praising it on CNBC yesterday.
I think there is one good measuring rod for the parties in the conflict, how will the women fare ? How will the minorities, the Christians, fare ? No doubt in my mind how these groups will fare under the Islamists Taliban regime. They will be oppressed, even exterminated. Therefor, I go for the secular Assad with all his flaws. I guess you can´t survive as a politician in the MidEast without some flaws. It´s not a place for the good guys. I really doubt that this man would cooperate with Al Qaida, he wouldn´t be able to rein them in after they had “done their job”. Assad wouldn´t tolerate for them trying to establish Sharia laws in his country.

Another measuring stick for me is how Israel will be affected. Syria’s tight with Iran, which funds Hizb’Allah, and is busy building a nuke. But, I think Assad is more predictable–and, perhaps more containable–than the Sunni Islamists.

      • I heard Trump’s comments on Putin’s op-ed on Fox News, and I thought he was fair and honest in his assessment. Many people here glommed onto the ‘exceptional’ comment and reacted emotionally. That, imho, is what the NYT intended.

I really do not trust Assad. There is a sort of circular relationship going on among Assad, Iran, and the various terrorist groups (Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas etc.). I don’t know where Russia and Putin fit in the mix because they have as much of a problem as we in the West do with terrorism, maybe even more so. Does he think he’s playing them (using the latest buzz word)?

  1. Our consulate in Herat, Afghanistan, was attacked by two splodey-dopes. No Americans were killed, but two Afghanistan security personnel are dead.
