Working off the same playbook he used to pass sweeping health care legislation, President Obama this year will try to ram a single, all-encompassing immigration bill through Congress that creates a path to citizenship for nearly all the illegal immigrants in the country, the New York Times reports today.
From the piece:
Mr. Obama and Senate Democrats will propose the changes in one comprehensive bill, the officials said, resisting efforts by some Republicans to break the overhaul into smaller pieces — separately addressing young illegal immigrants, migrant farmworkers or highly skilled foreigners — which might be easier for reluctant members of their party to accept.
The president and Democrats will also oppose measures that do not allow immigrants who gain legal status to become American citizens one day, the officials said.
This will be the major initiative of Obama’s second term. I expect him to follow his health care legislation template of brokering little disagreement and seeking little compromise.
It will be a bitter battle that will feature heavy doses of demonization of Republicans. And given the inept leadership the GOP has in Congress, I expect Republicans will find themselves perceived as a bunch of bigoted elitists by the time this over.
