Michelle Says “I” or “Me” 83 times

by Keith Koffler on September 5, 2012, 10:51 am

In her address to the Democratic Convention Tuesday evening, First Lady Michelle Obama used the words “I” or “me” 83 times, an average of more than three self-references a minute during her 25 minute speech.

The emphasis on herself is of note not only because of the strikingly personal nature of the speech, but because of the remarkable suggestion by the first lady that her political views and those of her husband arise much from their own experiences than a reasoned assessment of policies and facts.

Time and again in her remarks, Michelle cites examples from her life and President Obama’s that lead to policies they have tried to implement during his presidency.

From the transcript:

So when it comes to rebuilding our economy, Barack is thinking about folks like my dad and like his grandmother.  He’s thinking about the pride that comes from a hard day’s work.  That’s why he signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help women get equal pay for equal work.  (Applause.)

That’s why he cut taxes for working families and small businesses, and fought to get the auto industry back on its feet.  (Applause.)

Michelle talks about how deeply in student loan debt she and her husband were, saying:

That’s why Barack has fought so hard to increase student aid and keep interest rates down — (applause) — because he wants every young person to fulfill their promise and be able to attend college without a mountain of debt.  (Applause.)

President Obama’s personal experiences, she suggests, guide his entire political outlook, from economic policy to gay marriage.

So in the end, for Barack, these issues aren’t political — they’re personal.  Because Barack knows what it means when a family struggles.  He knows what it means to want something more for your kids and grandkids.  Barack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it.  (Applause.)

And he wants everyone in this country — everyone — to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we’re from, or what we look like, or who we love.  (Applause.)

Obama has been criticized here and elsewhere for conducting a self-indulgent presidency in which he focused on his personal priorities rather than securing the economy.

Writing in today’s Wall Street Journal, Holman Jenkins notes that Obama misused the stimulus to fund Democratic priorities and spent his political capital on health reform instead of focusing on issues like revamping the tax system.

Bill Clinton, who speaks to the Democratic convention Wednesday night, once lamented that he didn’t have a world-historical crisis to deal with on his watch. The irony is that President Obama had one and was too busy with his own priorities to notice or give the country the leadership it needed . . .

Faster growth would have done a lot more to advance Mr. Obama’s own professed aims—improved access to health care, jobs and opportunity—than any of his own big initiatives have done. Faster growth would have done a lot more to prepare the country to face its large challenges, with less conflict and less zero-sum bitterness, than any post-partisan magic he hoped to spread around.

In that context, it’s not surprising that Mrs. Obama used the word “I” – including six uses of “I’ve” – 59 times, and “me” 24 times.

In her own convention speech, which was in its own ways self-indulgent, Ann Romney nevertheless managed to limit herself to 60 self-references.

Good article Keith.

If only she looked more like a First Lady.

Grammar Nazi September 5, 2012 at 1:38 pm

What is that supposed to mean? She’s beautiful and has arms that are well-toned enough to be able to wear sleeveless dresses.

MyTwoCents September 5, 2012 at 11:01 pm

I am so tired about hearing how “toned” her arms are. If you have to focus on that as her best physical feature, then you know she isn’t anything special. Just imagine if a friend wanted to set you up on a blind date and the best they came up with was “she’s got really toned arms”.

So how do you say “I” and “me” in Wookie? -lol

Carl Williams September 6, 2012 at 9:23 am

Great article, if you overlook that he left out a slightly important piece of information — when you consider the word counts fo their speeches, “I” or “me” made up 2.7% of Obama’s words, 2.6% of Romney’s. If you think that’s a significant enough difference to start the name-calling of Obama you’re an angry, petty idiot.

BH September 7, 2012 at 8:27 am

As for you who referred to me as an angry petty idiot…actually, I’m probably one of the more happy and agreeable people you’d ever meet. However, I do a lot of fishing (Gee, I worked hard, saved smart and was able to raise my family and retire before I was too old to enjoy anything except tapioca and TV). The other day, I went fishing…cast my line out and landed one WHALE of a “sucker”……Sounds like you must be a self-made “have-not” from one of the “Libstates of America” like “Brokefornia” or “No Jobsy” (NJ)

“Michelle cites examples from her life and President Obama’s that lead to policies they have tried to implement during his presidency.”

Here’s one of the examples that was not included in the speech:

Documents reveal that The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ordered over 1,400 pounds of super high-powered explosives through the (TSA) Transportation Safety Administration set to be delivered on August 31st. The news comes just after it was reported that the DHS had purchased over 1.2 billion rounds of hollow point bullets and a wide assortment of riot gear. The new explosives purchase, as highlighted by mainstream news service Government Security News, consists of 1,400 pounds worth of high density ammonium nitrate and A-5 Flake RDX explosives.

Candidate Obama 2007:
“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

srdem65 September 5, 2012 at 11:49 am

The wonks at Social Security also ordered a big lot of hollow point bullets, too. Their explanation was that security at local SS offices have to be prepared for any acts of violence.

What a bunch of hooey. Anyone who has ever had to sit in a local SS office is either a Senior or a disabled person and their family. ewwwww, scary.

Vicky Bevis September 5, 2012 at 12:16 pm

That’s funny! I thought WE HAD a national civilian ( kinda) security force called the National Guard. And although they can be called up to reguaalr active duty, their mission for almost ALL of my life has been to protect the contiguious U.S., mostly from natural disasters.

The TSA is showing more & more “teeth” as reports of their nefarious activities begin to become public knowledge like testing people’s (who had already gone through security.) drinks this past wk. at the Columbus, Ohio Airport. ( U-Tube now has it)

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.”

-Alexander Tytler

Hmmm, “always followed by a dictatorship”…

srdem65 September 5, 2012 at 11:44 am

The Obamas need to hire one of those ‘story-watchers’ that the old TV soap operas used to keep the story line straight and not forget what was claimed in the past by the characters.

The story (and it is a story) that MrsO told last night conflicts with other ‘stories’ that they and others have told about their past. She equated her seemingly normal and loving upbringing by her stable, hardworking parents to MrO’s bizarre and troubling childhood of an uncaring father, a mother who dumped him in his grandparent’s care, and a strange unexplained education at elite, private schools and mysterious foriegn trips as a young man.
No one, neither Dem or Repub, believes that he went dumpster diving for furniture, wore thrift store shoes that were too small, and drove a rusted out auto to date the woman he met while working as an attorney in a Chicago law firm.

The incredible back story that seeps between the lines is that he choose not to work at a ‘high-paying’ job even though the O’s were deeply in debt, but assumed that his wife would support both of them and pay the bills because SHE had a high-paying job. She apparently forgot that she contemplated divorce because he had no interest in her or their children (in her own quoted words).
No doubt she’s matured into a fine public speaker, that her delivery is smooth, but the story keeps changing.

cincycinco September 5, 2012 at 1:19 pm

Why bother with keeping the story straight? Just say a bunch of feel good things you don’t really know or care about, hope some of it sticks, and count on a compliant media to file any inconsistencies down the memory hole.

If all else fails, say the other guy hates your race/sex/age/name/religion/whatever, and just keep yelling it loudly until whoever was dumb enough to expect some kind of reasonable answer from you goes away. It’s worked this long…

Susan September 5, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Well said, srdem. It was nothing but a bunch of lies and the only one’s who belief that bunk are the true believers. Mooch has become a fine public speaker with her masterful performance last night. Heard a caller on Rush make a comparison of her to Eva Peron with that rags to riches story she was telling. That couple took Argentina from a bustling economy to third world country status with their Marxist ideology, just like the Obamas plan to do with America.

I am sorry…I just want to start out by saying this. I am not here to say which party is the better party. So please don’t bring that argument to my doorstep. What I am here to ask is what is the point of this article? Michelle made reference to herself 83 times…23 more times than Ann? And this is supposed to prove what, that Obama is a bad president? That the whole time in office they have been focused on their own agendas? Because Michelle said I or me 83 times? I’m sorry but I want my president WHOEVER it is to bring their personal struggles they had (especially when if they have been in my shoes) to the table. It is the only way they will remember where they came from. When a parent or coach raises or leads a team should they not bring their personal experiences to the table? Will they not use I or me to express what they have been through? Because at the end of the day who else’s experience do they have but their own?

Grammar Nazi September 5, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Bravo!

Susan September 5, 2012 at 3:48 pm

Guess you missed the meat of the story…

The emphasis on herself is of note not only because of the strikingly personal nature of the speech, but because of the remarkable suggestion by the first lady that her political views and those of her husband arise much from their own experiences than a reasoned assessment of policies and facts.

The future of America can’t be based on one couples life experiences. We own this country, not the Obamas. The best way to learn who Obama really is and where his life experiences are leading this country, watch the movie “2016: Obama’s America”. It isn’t anti-Obama as the MSM has labeled it. Interspersed with his own words, it tells the story of Obama’s life and how his life-experiences shaped his ideology. The interview with Obama’s half-brother George is very telling about the Obamas compassion for their fellow man. If any open-minded American comes away from that movie still convinced to vote Obama, then they want the future he has to offer, forfeiting forever the freedom and liberty of their children and their children’s children.

Cara September 6, 2012 at 12:51 am

The point of Michelle’s speech is that life experiences DO matter. Someone who has struggled, who has made tough decisions before, is better prepared to make decisions under stressful situations, such as killing Osama. She made the point that there is more to life than making money, something Romney doesn’t get.

Also Michelle spoke for 7 minutes longer than Ann, leaving them at about the same rate.

Susan September 6, 2012 at 9:27 am

Enough of the he killed Osama BS. He had to be dragged into that decision kicking and screaming and he didn’t kill anybody – a special ops team did. On top of that, he made sure to cover his butt in case anything went wrong so he wouldn’t be held responsible.

no one would also believe that my sister and i grew up in the ghetto of indianapolis, wore shoes that were too small, ate raw hotdogs and and bologna and yet still managed to get into private schools…and yet still my little sister got into harvard, graduated, moved across country to get her masters…and currently has no car and a low paying job. look, stop trying to figure out peoples back stories. you claim the proof that it happened is thin and wavering, the proof that it didn’t is just as thin and wavering.

Radegunda September 6, 2012 at 12:37 am

We know, from facts on record, that Michelle’s attempt to spin her pre-White-House life as dominated by penury and shtruggle is a lot of hokum.

She grew up comfortably middle class. Barack went to a very expensive prep school. Both got preferential admission to elite universities & law school, despite mediocre grades. Both had high earning potential right out of school. Michelle had a six-figure patronage job. They lived in an expensive house in Hyde Park.

And yet Michelle still carried a huge chip on her shoulder, and a disdain for the “downright mean” America that granted her those privileges, up until she was crowned queen. And then she complained about how difficult it was to live in the White House.

Michelle was never happy, it appears, until she became the focus of a bizarre mass adoration (and not even then, really). And considering how enthusiastically she has adopted the high life (and how the Obamas, prior to the WH, apparently lived beyond their six-figure means), her nostalgia for the “simple life” was as phoney as her overwrought emoting and her claim that Barack reaches out to people of any party.

People who insist that Obama is supersmart and capable do nothing but prove their own idiocy.

Evangeline Brabant September 5, 2012 at 11:56 am

Do those “personal experiences” include the fact that Obama is gay, or at least bi-sexual?

How about the fact that he is a Muslim, or so he said awhile back “My Muslim faith.”

How about how our troops are everywhere “fighting for me.”

Then there is his communist background and radical indoctrination from childhood on?

What personal experiences? Every word out of Obama’s mouth is a self-serving lie.

Read Michelle’s senior thesis, you can find it online, read her equally badly written, but racist Masters thesis. Both shocking.

Only one of the candidates was married in the living room of a convicted terrorist and cop-killer. Hmmmm……I wonder who that could be?

Susan September 5, 2012 at 5:43 pm

Mooch and Barry weren’t married in Bill Ayers living room. He did begin his political career in the unrepentant terrorists living room and was much more familiar with him and his ‘lovely wife’ Bernadine Dohrn than “just a guy who lives in my neighborhood’.

Bernadine Dorhn, who in a 1969 speech to her followers, made reference to the Manson Family murder of Sharon Tate by saying “Dig it! First they killed those pigs and then they put a fork in pig Tate’s belly. Wild!” Sharon Tate was 8 months pregnant at the time of her murder.

Radegunda September 6, 2012 at 1:02 am

Michelle and Barack hated America before most of us ever heard about them. Mooch said this is “a downright mean country” with a “hole in our soul” — even though she had gotten more privileges than the average American.

And I’ve never head a single story about either of them directly, personally helping others with their own time or resources — unless it was with a camera crew in tow.

When they talk about how we should be all help each other, what they mean is: THEY will take OUR resources and “spread it around” to their preferred voting block or campaign contributors.

Radegunda September 6, 2012 at 12:56 am

Will, she DID have that nifty scheme to send the poor folk away from the U. of Chicago medical center, out to “community clinics.” Had to justify her six-figure patronage salary somehow.

STV September 5, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Good catch. If their reason for doing something is based upon themselves one might conclude their reason for doing anything has nothing to do with the America public, change, or facts. Using “I” or “we” at that level is probably over the top. It also appears the President and First Lady only really do things they want to do and maybe not best for the country. Their experiences are more important than facts, change, or their ability to learn from others.

“Barack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it.”
We don’t know who paid his way through school, but there’s nothing in his past that indicates he struggled to pull himself up. The way was paved for him. And his grandmother was a bank VP….believe me, he never knew hard times. Everything he ever had was given to him on a platter.
That’s not “the American dream”, that’s “being privileged”.

Defending or presenting something very wrong as right is a serious problem that has added to our troubled society. The First Lady and President speaking and advocating obvious wrongs and the sad part about it is young and old are influenced while it just adds to what these two are about…class warfare and dividing us from within.

James Robinson September 5, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Just like in 2008, Mr and Mrs Obama opened their “What do you say to Poor Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics” and said all the right words. The problem is once he was elected he did the opposite. This guy is a fraud, his wife is a fraud, and the DNC is a fraud.

Grammar Nazi September 5, 2012 at 1:54 pm

The entire American political process is a fraud…

It’s not that difficult. His father was a staunch anti-capitalist, anti-American. His mother was a staunch anti-capitalist, anti-American. His step-father was a staunch anti-capitalist, anti-American. The preacher he listened to for 20 years was a staunch anti-capitalist, anti-American. All his idols and associates were staunch anti-capitalist, anti-Americans. We are the company we keep.

This country was NOT founded on capitalism, and it grew into a powerful nation anyway. America is supposed to be a melting pot of MANY different faiths, ethnicities and political leanings. Why is everyone so hateful and fearful of someone who isn’t a mirror image of themselves?

Radegunda September 6, 2012 at 1:12 am

Why does Obama hate people who “cling to their guns and their religion”?
Why does he sneer at people who take pride in the businesses they’ve built?
Why does he go around the world putting down America? Why does he want us to be weaker?
Why does his campaign say that people who disagree with his policies want to push granny off a cliff?
Why do Dems constantly accuse Republicans of hating women, blacks, Latinos, etc. — and then vilify the women, blacks, Latinos etc. who are Republicans?
Why do Dems believe that every black person has to think and vote the same way?

And this country sure as heck was not founded on what Obama and today’s Dems are planning.
As for different faiths: didn’t you know that America’s first dealing with Muslims was in the form of needing to defend itself against the vicious Barbary Pirates (piracy and plunder being a long tradition of Islam)?

What a joke. Complaining about her college debt when she chose to go to the two most expensive schools in the nation, Princeton & Harvard (US News Rankings)! Uhh Michelle, try living within your means or stop complaining.

daddio September 5, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Also…she said her student loans were more than their mortgage….does anyone know how much their 1st mortgage was? It could have been $10,000…or maybe they were renters.

jr September 5, 2012 at 12:57 pm

And Barry racked up no debt because much was paid for by Ayers father, the Saudi family or scholarships (Fulbright) for chumdog foreign students.

Anyone notice the st..st..stuttering she did throughout the speech…especially at the end??? That is the same dramatic tactic her dear husband uses to g..g..get you emotionally ho…ho…hooked. Ann Romney used the same words 57 times in a 2400 word speech. Michelle Obama used them 83 times in a 3000 word speech. Roughly the same ratio. If you are looking for self-centerdness, each poster in this comments section should look in the mirror.

Julian Castro mentioned everyone in his family (from grandmother to daughter) but I don’t recall him ever mentioning his father or grandfather. Didn’t these figures play any part in his upbringing ? Did he just forget to give them any credit or was he too ashamed to tell what part they played in his life?

Susan September 5, 2012 at 6:21 pm

He also failed to mention his mom was co-founder of La Raza Unida (The Race United), a radical anti-white socialist group. She also called the heroes of the Battle of the Alamo “a bunch of drunks and crooks”. What a lovely role model she must have been for this young, aspiring politician and his twin brother.

C’mon everyone. How about 4 more years for Mr. Big. I’ve got lots and lots of trips and vacations planned for us. After all, he needs to be able to unwind after a long day of saving the planet. Besides, it only costs a few million per trip and that’s chump change for you taxpayers.

Grammar Nazi September 5, 2012 at 12:58 pm

At least she knows how to use her pronouns properly–unlike the majority of America. I thought her speech was well written and delivered in a convincing fashion.

It doesn’t matter who gets elected. As long as the parties refuse to reach across the aisle and cooperate with each other, nothing good is ever going to be accomplished, and the average American will continue to suffer, while the rich keep getting richer and keep complaining about the unwashed masses they refuse to employ at a decent living wage.

We need to bring our troops home from foreign lands and stop giving aid to other countries until we fix our messes at home. I’m tired of the propaganda of how sacrificing our soldiers’ lives in the Middle East is keeping us safe in America. Freedom is an illusion. The States of America are NOT United in any fashion.

Robin H September 5, 2012 at 11:59 pm

You’ve been spouting off on this article with really incredibly stupid thoughts. This has to be the dumbest. She uses pronouns better than anyone else? I should elect him president because of HER pronoun use? Really? I guess you’ve never heard her say “Barack and me?” That’s a mistake most kids have fixed by 8th grade.

If someone’s paying you for trolling, I hope they demand their money back.

Re: the Student debt – Note that they do not talk about pursuing the actual cost of higher education, the cost of which is partly pumped up by needless and self-indulgent humanities which should absolutely not be subsidized by the government by whatever means. More importantly, if they attacked the cost of higher ed they would alienate one of their core constituencies, and long term bureaus of indoctrination.

So far we’ve had Hitler, Goebbels and now Eva Braun.

Via Weekly Standard:
South Carolina Democratic chairman Dick Harpootlian compared his state’s Republican female governor, Nikki Haley, to Hitler’s mistress, Eva Braun this morning at a breakfast in Charlotte, North Carolina.
South Carolina’s the State reports:
S.C. Democratic Chairman Dick Harpootlian, never a loss for a quick quip, tossed a few stinging one-liners at the Wednesday delegation breakfast.
On Gov. Nikki Haley participating in daily news briefings in a basement studio at the NASCAR Hall of Fame: “She was down in the bunker a la Eva Braun.”

What kind of college loans did Obama have to pay back and from whom did he borrow the money. Maybe if he released his college records from Occidental, Columbia and Harvard, I have a feeling we could learn more about how Obama was accepted into these prestigious universities, than we can about Romney submitting more tax returns. Maybe the American people should demand that both candidates come clean in order to remove any doubt.

Hike the Ball September 5, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Obama said, “That’s why Barack has fought so hard to increase student aid and keep interest rates down — (applause) — because he wants every young person to fulfill their promise and be able to attend college without a mountain of debt.”

We worked through college–the one going to college worked part-time and the other worked full-time. We both received loan-free college educations. We saved to put our kids through so that each graduated with no debt–no loans to repay. This can be accomplished in most educational majors and for most students and graduates. (There are majors and students that require a full effort for studies but these are a minority.)

The Obamas took the easy way for an education and now complain that there was a cost. They now hate those who plan to gain a college education without loads or debt and instead others who take the easy way in majors and for students where loans are not required.

JanaMc September 5, 2012 at 4:16 pm

My husband did post graduate work taking classes after he got a job. His company reimbursed us for the cost of the classes with great incentives. If he made an ‘A’, they reimbursed us 100%, ‘B’-90%, ‘C’-80%, and if you made below a C they did not reimburse you. We don’t understand why the government does not go after the steeply rising costs of education. They seem to go after anything else that costs more! We have 4 kids and told them that we would pay for any school they wanted to attend, they just had to make the grades to be accepted. We scrimped and saved and all the kids left school with NO DEBT. They took some classes at community colleges (one of our kids said, “English 101 is English 101, no matter if it costs a little or a fortune…it still shows up as English 101!); they made decisions that would make them attractive to employers; 3 have been successful at 4 yr schools and one chose a technical career. It is a shame that parents and kids think that they have to take out loans for an education and go so deeply in debt. This is a major part of our education crisis.

OBlunder says he needs more time to complete the ‘transformation’ of this country. I say we give it to him with Holder in his cell for about 25 to life – that should be sufficient.

BO’s “American Dream” apparently included being mentored by a Communist, Frank Marshall Davis, and far-left radicals Alinski, Dohrn and Ayers, with spiritual guidance from the good Rev. Wright. All this after he was fathered by a Communist womanizing drunk to a far left grifter mother. You can argue “nature” vs. “nurture” all day long and the result is the same. But of course it is racist to talk about this stuff.

heb September 5, 2012 at 1:09 pm

So the Romneys are selfish for keeping a horse? And employing a groom with a family to support. And paying for feed that’s sold by someone with a family to support and transported in trucks by someone with a family to support and manufactured in a factory by people with families to support from stuff that’s grown by farmers with families to support. And having a barn built by construction workers with families to support with materials trucked by drivers with families to support from factories with workers with families to support.

Sounds to me like that one horse has done more to put Americans to work than that horse’s behind in the White House.

If Obama wins just imagine the mess poor ol’ Barry will inherit. Will he blame himself for the mess since he can’t go back to Bush again? The guy just can’t catch a break.

Even Al Gore is saying Bush can’t continue to be blamed. These guys are really desperate.

It will be President Bush’s fault when Obama loses in November.
