Obama Flew Air Force One for 90-Mile Campaign Trip

by Keith Koffler on July 16, 2012, 9:06 am

President Obama Saturday commissioned Air Force One to travel to a campaign rally near Richmond, Virginia, a location only 90 miles away from the White House, highlighting the large expenses being borne by taxpayers as the president traverses the country to campaign and raise cash for a campaign that is failing to meet its fundraising goals.

The cost of flying Air Force One is currently about $180,000 per hour, according to ABC News. Only a portion of the cost is borne by the campaign.

With a cruising speed of around 130 mph, Obama’s Marine One chopper could easily have had the president at his location in 45 minutes at far lower cost. Obama had to use Marine One anyway to ferry him from the White House to Andrews Air Force Base, where he boarded his jet.

It’s possible there is some kind of security purpose to using Air Force One instead of Marine One, even though Obama flies his chopper several times a week. What’s more, Obama took Marine One on a trip of similar length in 2009 to Dover, Delaware. George W. Bush used Marine One to ferry him to the Richmond area in September 2003.

But certainly, Air Force One is a more convenient and comfortable method of travel that makes a more impressive entrance to a city hosting a presidential appearance.

Either way, Saturday’s trip is emblematic of the approach of president whose frequent use of Air Force One for campaign purposes has drained money from taxpayers while filling his campaign coffers. In June, Obama held 33 fundraisers – about eight times the number held by Bush during his reelection effort in June 2004 – traveling literally from coast to coast to supply his operations with desperately needed cash.

I’ve been trying to keep tabs on the costs of AF1 this year, and for June’s 33 fundraisers and other trips the costs ended up breaking down as follows:

June total flown on AF1 = 19,785 miles
Cost for June, 2012 = (19,785/550 avg. air speed of AF1) * $181,757 p/hr for AF1 = $6,538,295

As of June 30, 2012 YTD miles: 65,830 domestic 35,110 international = 100,940 miles
As of June 30, 2012 YTD cost of AF1: (100,940 miles/550 mph) * $181,757 p/hr for AF1 = $33,357,367 (approx.)

None of this includes any other support craft or other travel related expenses (ground transport, hotels, etc.) this is just the operating costs of AF1.

veritaseequitas July 16, 2012 at 11:21 am

One hour of AF1 would pay off my mortgage AND my credit card, and I would still have enough for a vacation. Not Martha’s Vineyard of course, but then I’m just a plebe and they probably wouldn’t let me through the gates anyway. I would be happy with a trip to NY though to see my kid.

lcsouthern July 16, 2012 at 11:36 am

One hour on A1 would pay off my mortgage, my car and I would have $100,000 left…

Lindy July 16, 2012 at 5:27 pm

One hour on A1 would pay off our mortgage, both of our cars, AND we could go on a world cruise with the remainder.

Lizzy July 16, 2012 at 12:14 pm

You’ve created a full time job for yourself!:)

Marine72 October 29, 2012 at 12:22 pm

I know you are using ball park figures; however, it would be prudent to increase your time by at least 50% since the average cruising speed is only derived when up to altitude and speed. Air Force One, like most commercial jets, spends most of its time during in country flights just in taxiing, take-off, landing, climbing to cruise altitude under high throttle/power, and landing again at higher throttle to maintain airspeed under maximum lift (dirty flight trim) at low speed.

Therefore:
- AF1 June = $6,538,295 x 1.5 = $9,807442.5
- AF1 YTD = $33,357,367 x 1.5 = $50,034550

The military in the Norfolk area use helicopters all the time to go to the DC area and back. He could have hitched a ride with them and it would have made a much better optic.

He’s coming to my town (Cincinnati) today. Barf.

RickW July 16, 2012 at 9:37 am

The abuse of authority POTUS has demonstrated with his campaign trips points out the need for some controls to be implemented for future Administrations. Perhaps the Speaker of the House to serve as an arbiter? I hate adding to the bureaucracy but this man is bleeding the taxpayers dry without any limits on his ability to travel at will. Thoughts?

Gunnerdad October 29, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Rick,
I totally agree with the desparate need for some restraint, but when Nacy P. was Speaker she used militarty aircraft every week for her and her family to and from CA. So the control needs to be beyond someone who may abuse the system themselves. They get an expense account. That should be for none essential travel. Raising money, flying the Flotus to Spain or wherever shouldn’t be our problem. And then there is the expense of flying the vehicles all over the place which straps our Military to the point that sometimes civilian aircraft have to support our troops in battle. The same can be said for the cost of the Sec. of State. Enough’s enough. We all must tighten our belts in this Country and it needs to start at the top. You wantr to go out to be on with Letterman…..pay for the trip…..let Letterman pay for it or let him fly his stuff to DC.

OldTimer July 16, 2012 at 9:47 am

What is the operation cost of Marine One?

Alky October 29, 2012 at 12:39 pm

The cost of Marine One and AF-1 should be 0 (zero) to the tax payer, for campaigns!!!
Wait… isn’t that a law already? That’s right, Obama doesn’t obey laws.

Susan July 16, 2012 at 9:49 am

Thank you for writing an article on his frivolous waste of taxpayer money, Keith. There may have been a security reason for him taking AF1, but chances are it was because he prefers riding around in the comfort of a luxurious aircraft rather than being cooped up in a helicopter. One thing I’ve observed about this shallow shell of a human being is that he cares about #1 first and foremost, and everybody else be damned.

Grifter-in-chief

Anonna July 16, 2012 at 10:33 am

Interesting, isn’t it, that we have begun to get hints of danger lurking for the Prez and Miz. Someone in the motorcycle entourage (I think) wants to hurt Meesh. BO may be using Airforce One for security reasons. Although you are the only one to have suggested this, Keith, it rings as a possible truth.

I wonder if this is shadowplay for the Obots, another means of binding them emotionally to The One Couple. Or could there really be people out there crazy enough and un-American enough to think that killing is the answer to our Presidential problem? I pray that nothing happens to President and First Lady Obama. I dislike them both intensely, but hope they are safe from harm.

These little tremors of suggested danger make me wonder what we will read when this administration’s tell-all memoirs pour forth. They are keeping up such a brave front, attacking everyone so freely, look so confident, and yet I wonder what is really going on behind the curtain.

hirider July 16, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Assassination is NOT EVER the answer to our problems!!! This simply makes the one who was killed a martyr for years and years to come. And then we would have the bozo Biden in charge!

david trueman July 16, 2012 at 11:03 am

He used AF1 to fly to Roanoke, Va on Monday, then Hampton Roads/Norfolk on Friday, returned to DC, then flew into Richmond Saturday. This is ridiculous use of such a large aircraft, what happened to his bus?

Girly1 July 16, 2012 at 11:12 am

It’s all about megalomania and narcissism! This fraud has been ‘strutting his stuff” since Day One! It’s ‘affirmative action’ at it’s worst – lowly community organizer hits mega lottery. A day without AF One and the motorcades is like a day without cocaine. He’s addicted.

l have been watching Presidential motorcades pass through my neighborhood since the days of Reagan, Clinton, and Bush. They were usually around 10 vehicles. Obama has been here 20x with a 44 vehicle caravan. We never, ever had our steets closed down – with Obama they are closed 12 hours before his arrival – until he leaves. I have to show my DL to enter my own street! Often times, the motorcycle escorts put their sirens and red lights on to announce the arrival of the Messiah.

This narcissistic charade is being repeated on a daily basis – somewhere, some unfortunate city in America. Every day for the past 42 months has been party time for the Con Artist-in-Chief! He is addicted to the fame and celebrity and cares nothing for this country or it’s people. It’s all about HIM…and spending Trillions of taxpayer funds to buy votes. Every day is a campaign day!

When all the dust settles, history will define Fast Eddie as the greatest fraud ever perpetrated on this country. And Fast Eddie will be laughing all the way to the bank – giving high fives to MO – as they ride off into the sunset laughing about how easy it was to fleece America.

Just2old July 16, 2012 at 11:36 am

Ding ding ding!!

MarjoJimbo July 16, 2012 at 11:13 am

And then the crowd gets riled up with his speech:

“If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.”

veritaseequitas July 16, 2012 at 11:16 am

How revolting that speech was.
But then look at his point of view. He certainly didn’t do the necessary to get to be POTUS. Everyone else did the dirty work for him.

Beam Me Up July 16, 2012 at 12:37 pm

Yeah, that ‘…you didn’t build that’ statement made me say “F*** YOU!” I find that he makes me say that a lot.

I think owebama is competing with Algor for the biggest carbon footprint award. Tell all your liberal friends. :-)

Carole July 16, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Did you notice he is sounding a little unhinged and looking a bit crazed? I kind of expert him to have a meltdown if he doesn’t calm down.

Langley Spook July 16, 2012 at 3:11 pm

PLEASE! PLEASE!! let Barack Hussein Obama have a public ‘melt-down’ (that the sycophant “media” can’t explain away) to show all of America what an ‘empty suit’ Obama truly is…

sablegsd July 16, 2012 at 8:14 pm

That would be wonderful.

gracepmc July 16, 2012 at 3:07 pm

This had me fuming. Obama doesn’t have a clue about building a business. But they say laughter is the best medicine so to get myself out of this funk I played the Obamas and the Smiths start a lemonade stand business. At the Smiths, Sally goes out and either picks lemons from their tree or goes to the local market or store, Sam stays at home and prepares the work space, and gathers all the necessary tools for processing and presenting of the lemonade — juicer, adequate ice supply, containers, card table, signage from materials on hand. Michelle goes to her closet, selects the appropriate JCrew outfit, puts on her $500 sparkly tennis shoes and goes off to Whole Foods for the organic Meyer lemons. Barack, at home, in the meantime, watches sports on the flat screen. When Michelle comes back, she has to go back out and get a Cusinart or some other appliance to process the lemons, although they do have two manual juicers. Barack still watching sports. Michelle back at home and they both hit a brick wall with the container. Plastic — not enviro friendly, glass — might break. What to do? Same with cups. A card table no — a phone call to the local union builder to contract for the lemonade structure….In the meantime, Sally and Sam have made $15 profit off their sales so far. Barack is back to watching sports, waiting for the union contractor to get back to him and Michelle has started calling all the Democratic mothers at Sidwell Friends to tell them of the upcoming event. Beyonce has agreed to come and sing. Anyway, it’s a game you also can play, in your own head, for free. And have a glass of homemade lemonade while you’re at it.

gracepmc July 16, 2012 at 3:11 pm

Oh yeah I forgot about the sugar dilemma. The Obamas are consulting Mayor Bloomberg. The Smiths, knowing the market likes to have a choice, makes some with and some without.

Jojo July 16, 2012 at 4:20 pm

Love this!

DougH2 July 17, 2012 at 10:34 am

Keep listening to Republican advocates and you will continue to get dumber and dumber. Listen to the entire clip.

warren w November 19, 2012 at 11:43 am

Who’s money do you think built those roads and bridges ! Not only my taxes but my business taxes,so we built that also! NOT the Gov. MORON!

veritaseequitas July 16, 2012 at 11:14 am

Uh, maybe he was thinkin’ he just wanted a change. Ya’ know? Oh, I think I’ll take the Rolls today instead of the Hummer – change it up a little. Don’t want to be too bored after all.
On the other hand, maybe he is using AF1 as much as possible now because he thinks his days could be numbered. That’s what I’m talkin’ about.

srdem65 July 16, 2012 at 11:30 am

It’s time to polish up “Michelle’s Crystal Ball”. MrsO flew to NewYork yesterday, attended a fundraiser, then took the children to see a movie (the new Spiderman) and topped off the junket with dinner at Chef BobbyFlay’s restaurant. It’s good to be queen.

Anonna July 16, 2012 at 12:07 pm

Keith — can you let us know more about this little fun time between Mother and the Princesses Obama? How much did it cost us? Did the Princesses attend the fundraiser? Were they listed as “senior staff?” Did they have that all-important 6:15 family dinner with Daddy? How much does it cost to sup at Bobby Flays?

RickW July 16, 2012 at 5:03 pm

A normal human should be able to eat for about $90 (w/o liquor) at Bobby’s place, Anonna. However, I doubt Moochelle or her immediate posse were charged. The servers usually get screwed out of a tip as well.

SnarkEsq. July 16, 2012 at 12:12 pm

Actually, it looks like MO and the kids spent the weekend in NY. They went to THREE Broadway shows, one on Saturday and two on Sunday (before and after the fundraiser brunch):

SnarkEsq. July 16, 2012 at 12:06 pm

Keith, he also flew around VA on Friday. The schedule isn’t clear, but I assume he used Marine One. He flew into Norfolk International Airport to attend the first event at a high school in Virginia beach, Then he went back to the airport to travel to another high school in Hampton, Va. He flew from Norfolk to Langley Air Force Base to get to Hampton. A Google search tells me that it’s only about 30 miles from Va beach to Hampton, Va, yet he went back to Norfolk airport in order to fly into Langley and then drive to Hampton. (After that, he flew over to Roanoke, which of course if much farther away).

Enough!
Hello, Congress, he has his own money to campaign with. Send the bill to Obama for Preezy Headquarters.com or whatever it is this week. Air Force One is not a personal re-election tour bus for Obama.
It is a modern, gas guzzling high tech symbol of the wealth and power of the United States. For Offical Use Only.

Linky Drake July 16, 2012 at 1:37 pm

Air Force One is not ‘his jet’… It belongs to ‘we the people of the United States’…

aunty M July 16, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Everyone now knows that what P. Obama does best is waste taxpayrs money.
He really has no respect for we peons.

KN July 16, 2012 at 2:12 pm

“But certainly, Air Force One is a more convenient”

More convenient for who? Certainly not the flight crew, maintenance crew nor any other support staff. Marine One would have been a much better choice. Better yet staying at the WH and actually doing some work would the best choice.

Imperial President indeed.

Lizzy July 16, 2012 at 3:14 pm

Perhaps when we get a real President and maybe have a real Senate and a
Congress that work together we should change a few things. How about some
new stringent rules about the use of AF1 and other military personnel for use
as free campaign travel. We can’t undo what the Obama’s have done but we could keep it from ever happening again!

Jojo July 16, 2012 at 4:14 pm

And the story from the MSM… ~crickets~

copper July 16, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Pathetic and what’s worse is Congress, who is supposedly in charge of the purse strings, does nothing! What event did he attend as an excuse to make the trip. It is illegal for him to use government property solely for a campaign trip. I don’t care if there is a security issue. Stay home. Putting lives at risk just to go campaigning is irresponsible..

DougH2 July 16, 2012 at 6:50 pm

You people are stupid. Google George W Bush’s use of Air Force One. All this is public record. I didn’t see many articles when he was campaigning in 2004. President Obama’s use of Air Force One hasn’t yet come close to Bush’s use in his first term. Further more, Obama has covered a greater percentage of operating costs from his campaign funds.

warren w November 19, 2012 at 11:50 am

Obama has used AF-1 more than any other prez in the first two years he is second only to that sleezbag pervert Clinton. and he isn’t close to being done yet.

hiway280z July 17, 2012 at 3:10 am

Using tax payer money should not be allowed for any president to campaign. first of all if they are a good president they are a shoe in for re election. Should not cost us for him to go make money from people to get re elected.

hiway280z July 17, 2012 at 3:26 am

just a second thought. bet he is trying to figure out how to get an ex order stating when he leaves office Air Force One goes with him and Marine one too. watch his daily schedule on white house web site daily. He is almost always on AFO going somewhere, or vacation, golf, or has is am briefing and nothing else. parties or on occasion meeting someone, usually sports figures. He is someone’s useful idiot and when they finish with him they will throw him under the bus with the rest of us.

DougH2 July 17, 2012 at 6:27 am

And he still hasn’t flown it as much as Bush at this point in his Presidency.

warren w November 19, 2012 at 12:01 pm

That is total BS look at the stats he is second only to Clinton the perv

Dave July 17, 2012 at 10:03 am

You folks are all missing the point. Sure, he values his comfort and prestige over the cost to tax payers, but that is just a consequence of his real intent. The only way the US can be dragged into a one world order scenario is to break us to the point that we no longer have the means or will to resist. The more of our money he can spend frivolously, the sooner he can accomplish that goal. Of course, once that happens, providing it is soon enough, he stands a good chance of becoming the head honcho of that world government.

Mach37 July 17, 2012 at 12:33 pm

There are smaller VIP planes available with adequate security and communications equipment. All the fancy stuff on the 747 is intended for long distance travel and is not necessary for short trips. But no one has the fortitude to question Obama about his use of the high-priced stuff even though it is not necessary.

umreb78 July 17, 2012 at 1:32 pm

Sure he could have taken Marine One, but we must keep in mind the obvious mental illnesses suffered by the Messiah. One of them is similar to a “napoleanic complex” but a bit different. I think Barry has a touch of “little tool and no ball complex”. Given these deficiencies, you do have to admit that arriving on a manly roaring 747 does make it seem more like the arrival of a real man than showing up in an egg beater. What a man!!!!!

Barbara E. Taylor July 17, 2012 at 1:52 pm

Why does anybody today want to have nine children or more when they cannot afford even one child. The fathers refuse to pay child support, they don’t live at the home with his children.

Why does anybody today want to have 12 or more children when the father is not even around to teach them about all the opportunities that await them through education and not selling drugs.

Why?

‘They’re standing on the corner and they can’t speak English.

I can’t even talk the way these people talk:

Why you ain’t,
Where you is,
What he drive,
Where he stay,
Where he work,
Who you be…

And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk.

And then I heard the father talk.

Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can’t be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth.
In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living.

People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an Education, and now we’ve got these knuckleheads walking around.

The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal.

These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids.

$500 sneakers for what?

And they won’t spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics.

I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit.

Where were you when he was 2?

Where were you when he was 12?

Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn’t know that he had a pistol?

And where is the father? Or who is his father?

People putting their clothes on backward:
Isn’t that a sign of something gone wrong?

People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn’t that a sign of something?

Isn’t it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body?

What part of Africa did this come from?

We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don’t know a thing about Africa…..

I say this all of the time. It would be like white people saying they are European-American. That is totally stupid.

I was born here, and so were my parents and grand parents and, very likely my great grandparents. I don’t have any connection to Africa, no more than white Americans have to Germany , Scotland , England , Ireland , or the Netherlands. The same applies to 99 percent of all the black Americans as regards to Africa. So stop, already!

With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua,… Mohammed, and all of that crap……..
And all of them are in jail.

Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person’s problem.

We have got to take the neighborhood back.

People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different ‘husbands’ — or men or whatever you call them now.

We have millionaire football players who cannot read.

We have million-dollar basketball players who can’t write two paragraphs. We, as black folks have to do a better job.

Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us.

We have to start holding each other to a higher standard..

cmy October 30, 2012 at 1:29 am

seriously embarrassed now about wearing my cap backwards.

fair question.

It’s not his money. What does he care?

cmy October 30, 2012 at 1:19 am

he does love his entrances, though I wasn’t aware it had gotten so bad that the world’s most sophisticated 747 was used when a much cheaper helicopter would have done nearly as well. I appreciate you pointing this out.

Non-Sequitor alert – remember the presidential date to Broadway not long after he won the election? Shut down blocks and inconvenienced theatergoers and probably lost money for the theater, though the bloom was still on the rose at that point and nobody complained. My memory, which could certainly be wrong, is that generally presidents went to Camp David for R&R…secure, remote, and keeps the boss safe without shutting down blocks of economic activity just to have a little fun or get away with the fam. But not as glamorous as holding back the crowds while the boss strolls through, eh? What good is having it if you don’t flaunt it?

Hello there! Do you know if they make any plugins to help with SEO?

I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good results.
If you know of any please share. Thank you!

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin

The vacation day record-breaking Bush didn’t even get this level of scrutiny as he was doubling the national debt after having received a balanced budget from Clinton.

Republicans have now completely lost credibility in the following:

National Security – Bush failed to keep us safe against foreign enemies
Fiscal responsibility – Bush, and Republican congress receive bal budget and proceeded to double the national debt.
Picking winning candidates – McCain/Palin, Romney/Lyin’ Ryan
Freedom – Contraceptives, choice

I wonder how much Obama spent for his shoes. Was that significantly more than Bush? Did he buy more expensive dog food?

I’m sure we will see an article to answer these compelling questions soon.
