Obama Plays Golf for the 100th Time of his Presidency

by Keith Koffler on June 17, 2012, 12:40 pm

Updated 5:40 pm

President Obama rolled out of his Kenwood, Chicago home Sunday morning and headed to out to play his 100th round of golf since becoming president.

Obama played at the Beverly Country Club with two old pals, Eric Whitaker and Marty Nesbitt, as well as regular golf companion Marvin Nicholson, the White House trip director.

Obama has already played golf eight times this year. He actually is a little off his normal pace – perhaps campaigning is intruding on golf. The president golfed 28 times in 2009, 30 times in 2010, and an incredible 34 times in 2011.

Obama’s golfing takes about five hours, including the motorcades back and forth from the fairways. If one thinks of this as taking up  much of the day – include getting ready to go and cooling off afterward – it’s fair to say that Obama has spent more than three months of his presidency golfing.

While golf is played by millions of Americans and extends its reach well into the middle class, it is also perceived as a game of the idle rich and is generally unavailable to the poor, putting Obama’s frequent outings at odds with his image as a man of “hope” for the dispossessed.

The White House carefully downplays Obama’s golfing, rarely talking about it and releasing few pictures of the president swinging away. A search of the White House uploads on the Flickr photo-sharing website finds only a handful of shots of the president playing golf, compared to nearly two dozen of him playing basketball, which he spends far less time at.

Many argue that golf provides a badly needed source of relaxation for Obama, a refuge and a respite from extraordinary demands of the presidency. And most or all of Obama’s golf days have been on weekends or during scheduled vacations.

But others say the president could find another way to relax, and that golfing sends the wrong message to the poor and to the troops during a time of economic struggle and war.

George W. Bush gave up golfing in 2003, explaining his rationale five years later in an interview with POLITICO, saying it was wrong to play during wartime:

I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.

Obama clearly disagrees and has been unperturbed by criticism of his golf, maintaining a steady pace even during an election year.

Out of reach of the poor? Are there no caddies?

Tomas June 17, 2012 at 9:57 pm

Remember the outrage by the incompetent main stream media when Bush played golf while soldiers were dying in Iraq. Remember the daily counter of the dead. Today Obama spends his hundredth day on the golf course….. crickets and the families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are lucky if their sons and daughters are scrolled, once on the bottom of the screen.

TaterSalad June 17, 2012 at 10:00 pm

Liberal Hypocrisy at its finest. David Axelrod hammers GWB for playing golf while the countries economy falters. How ironic that President Obama has played more golf in 3-1/2 years than any other President……………….while the economy not only falters but also tanks into depression.

Tim K June 17, 2012 at 10:01 pm

Playing golf every other week? Eisenhower played every other day. Maybe 100 times a year would be excessive.
I want to know how much time he spends watching ESPN.
All the guy has to do is read the speeches that Plouffe and Axlerod write for him; maybe he could take up polo, or is that a racist comment?

Beverly June 17, 2012 at 10:05 pm

Yes, but is his game better off than it was four years ago?

Texas Jack June 18, 2012 at 9:09 am

BRAVO…Beverly….BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave June 17, 2012 at 10:07 pm

so it goes… different standards for a Dimorat President…when Bush was president the press crucified him for playing golf but what does anyone expect from an out of touch pandering liar like Obama who sat there and said the “private sector is dong FINE”!!

The more this socialist is on the golf course the less damage he can do to our country. November can’t come soon enough. After he loses in November maybe he can run for office in FRANCE…

Dave June 17, 2012 at 10:08 pm

I don’t like Obama’s policies or leadership than most conservatives… However, why nit pick on this issue… Being in a stressful job and playing 100 rounds of golf in approx 200 weeks of service does not seem to me the thing to be focusing on. Come on… complain about the real reasons to complain about our national leadership or lack thereof…

john smith June 17, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Good or bad at golf we all know he’s new at the game and a hundred rounds in 4 years means he has had nothing to do in all this time, but golf. Perhaps the nation going down the tubes was what he wantd after all.

KipNoxzema June 17, 2012 at 10:20 pm

You know, we’re in such a great recovery the Private Sector is going so well and doesn’t need any help. Might as well do nothing but play golf…the last 3 and a half years. Wait. He needs 4 more years to complete the job, though. I remember now. Do you understand? I don’t either.

Texas Jack June 18, 2012 at 10:24 am

David…..IF he was a leader would be one thing, but I don’t think he could lead kindergartners to the bathroom. He has caused gas prices to double since his inaugaration, deficit has increased FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS, unemployment close to double digit, 3200 NEW regulations on small business. OVER 50% are on some form of Federal Relief, under 50% pay taxes…so can you point out ANYTHING that makes your point…THOUGHT SO

Mike Loomis June 17, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Dear Barack–

My daughter was born 4 and a half years ago. I was afforded two days off (unpaid). Now that I’ve seen your tax-payer paid vacations, the choice is clear. Thanks for making my vote so easy.

Jack Nicklaus June 17, 2012 at 11:00 pm

Wow. A hundred rounds? Let’s see. Four to five hours per round. Another hour or so to drop by Five Guys Burgers. Hmmmmmm? Four to five hundred hours away from the harpie and his job. What’s not to love. Every day is fathers day. Well done president slacker. Do you need a caddie? Probably not, libs are well known cheaters.

Chad June 17, 2012 at 11:25 pm

All this spending and getting around the constitution is stressful… Golf is crucial for our President to decompress.

Racist Obamessiah June 17, 2012 at 11:36 pm

The failed, racist, wee-weed up, America-hating, golf-vacationing, one-term-is-one-too-many, socialist, media-anointed Obamessiah could not be more desperately out of touch with the unemployed American Middle Class.

Dcinnamin Baker June 17, 2012 at 11:40 pm

PRESIDENT OBAMA NEED SOME TIME TO HAVE RECREATION TOO. HE WORKS WORKS WORKS ALL OF THE TIME SO YOU NEED TO CHECK THE TRUTH. THE TRUTH IS THAT HE HARDLY EVER GETS ANY TIME TO RELAX AND VPLAY GOLF. PRESIDENT OBAMA HELPS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN OUR WORLD ALL OF THE TIME.

Dcinnamin Baker June 17, 2012 at 11:46 pm

100 TIMES OUT OF ABOUT 1100 eleven hundred days not A lot because he need to be physically fit too SO HE SHOULD REALLY BE PLAYING 2 TIMES A WEEK TO GET A WORK OUT BUT HE WORKS ON HIS JOB AND TRAVELS TO AND FROM WORK ABOUT 80 HOURS AWEEK. IF HE WERE TO PLAY 2 TIMES A WEEK THAT WOULD BE BETTER FOR HIS HEALTH, THAT WOULD BE 104 TIMES PER YEAR. HE IS SUPPOSED TO PLAY GOLF TWICE A WEEK FOR BUILDING MUSCLES ETC.

AZ Granny June 18, 2012 at 12:49 am

gosh Dcinnamin, I had no idea Obama’s doctor prescribed golf twice a week for him. Do you know there is a gym in the White House where Obama can work out and do strength training to build muscles? It would be more effective, less time wasted and less people inconvenienced than his indulgent games of golf, tying up the golf course for hours and keeping other people away.

To answer your earlier post, Obama plays golf an average of every 12 days, as previously mentioned in the comments. How much more time off does he need? He doesn’t start work til nearly noon most days and campaigns several days a week so he really isn’t doing very much work he was hired to do.

mike feehan June 18, 2012 at 12:50 am

I THOUGHT THIS EMPTY SUIT WAS A CHRISTIAN (WHAT A TOTAL JOKE THAT IS!!!). SERIOUSLY, HE AND HIS WIFE CONTINUE TO TELL US THAT THEY ARE CHRISTIANS.

I KNOW OF NO CHRISTIANS, ABSOLUTELY NONE, THAT SUPPORT THE KILLING OF INNOCENT CHILDREN IN THE WOMB AND SAME SEX MARRIAGE. ALSO, MOST CHRISTIANS THAT I KNOW OF GO TO CHURCH PRETTY MUCH EVER WEEK UNLESS THEY ARE EXTREMELY SICK OR IF AN EMERGENCY COMES UP.

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME THE SO-CALLED CHRISTIAN ATTENDED SERVICE, ABOUT THREE MONTHS AGO OR SO. HE FINDS TIME TO GO GOL,FING, ATTEND WEDDINGS, AND GO ON VACATION YET HE CANNOT FIND TIME FOR THE LORD.

I SEE RIGHT THROUGH THIS PHONY AND I’M SURE THAT GOD CAN AS WELL.

Shelley Peck June 18, 2012 at 1:06 am

Where was the headline “George W Bush” Spent 1/3 of his time In Office on Vacation”?

Susan June 18, 2012 at 10:35 am

Not sure why that would be important to the issues we’re facing in 2012. If you insist on living in the past, I’d suggest checking the MSM archives from 2000-2008…I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.

The Original June 18, 2012 at 9:23 pm

And according to his staff, he never went on vacation. He would take a few hours a day to work outside with his hands when he was on the farm, but unlike this guy in the WH right now, he actually was at his desk by 7:00 am while in Crawford or at the WH.

Joseph June 18, 2012 at 1:35 am

Bush couldn’t even play one round without the sack of dog crap media giving him grief. Whatever Obama does they slobber all over him. It’s disgusting.

Spencer June 18, 2012 at 1:52 am

Obvious typo in your first sentence. Please fix it. Feel free to delete this comment.

Jeff Kelley June 18, 2012 at 1:59 am

Let’s run the numbers. …..

50 weeks a year at 40 hours per week for 3 years is 6000 hours (let’s allow 2 weeks of vacation). If BHO played 100 rounds while in office and (by all accounts) a round of golf takes 4 hours, that’s 400 hours playing golf or 6% of his time in office. He’s got a lot of catching up to do to beat the progressive democrat Woodrow Wilson … who btw, sold out the USA to the Federal Reserve.

Realist June 18, 2012 at 3:09 am

My Father defined golf as, “the useless way of prolonging the life of a worthless man”.

seagull911 June 18, 2012 at 3:37 am

History repeats itself. The same comments were made about Eisenhower during his presidency.

The Original June 18, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Yeah . . . well, at least Eisenhower actually did something during his life. Even with having the title of President, Obama hasn’t done anything but mess up everything. He is an embarrassment.

Larry June 18, 2012 at 5:42 am

Let them eat cake, (while I’m busy golfing). Come on, lt’s hear the liberals say he need to unwind. Fortunately for him, maybe he can plan a long vacation beginning next January.

Dan L June 18, 2012 at 6:32 am

A round of golf probably takes about 6 hours with travel time, prep time, a meal, and interference with other activities. 100 x 6 = 600 hours. 600 divided by a 40 hour work week = 15 weeks. 15 weeks of “time off from work” is a lot in 3 and a half years. I haven’t played 100 rounds of golf in my life. Since I have my own business in the last 3 years I haven’t played a single round of golf. I just don’t have time, yet the President has time for 100 rounds. Unbelievable.

LC June 18, 2012 at 3:36 pm

He played this round of golf, and many of the others, on a weekend – not during your 40-hour work week. How does that make it “time off from work”? Your equation is flawed.

The Original June 18, 2012 at 9:30 pm

So did Pres. Bush . . . but the lefties still blasted him. Now, Obama . . . he just gets a free pass.

whatsername June 18, 2012 at 6:58 am

Funny thing about Obama. When he was running for president he played basketball, now he plays golf??????

Jimmy Neutron June 18, 2012 at 7:03 am

James K. Polk is an underrated and under-appreciated President. On top of being one of the highest achievers in office, he also said some remarkable things. Here is one that is apropos:

“No president who performs his duties faithfully and conscientiously can have any leisure.”

Polk, at the time, was our youngest elected President. He died three months after leaving office at the age of 53.

frank June 18, 2012 at 7:30 am

Wish he’d played golf everyday, then he wouldn’t have time to destroy the US economy and rid the country of jobs. Barack Crybaby Oblame-O, says it’s Bushs fault hes on the links, Oblame-O trying to beat Bushs score. HAHA

Maybe I will care when Boehner is ever elected to the Office of President.

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

“Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation — I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.*

“* Unless, you know, 224 years from now, whoever happens to president simply decides he really doesn’t want to do that.”

- Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of Barack Obama’s U.S. Constitution

The Founders set the course in a simple, concise, 35-word affirmation — the president’s top job is to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution. The chief executive does, of course, have other responsibilities, but his guardianship of the document they had just written was deemed by the Founders to be of such great import that they made him swear it — aloud, in front of witnesses.

In 1884, Congress, having no set oath of office, wrote its own: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same …”

Little did they know then that 128 years later, America would face just that: a domestic threat to the U.S. Constitution.

From the very beginning, the president and his administration made clear they had no intention of enforcing laws they didn’t like. Mr. Obama and his minions decided that they would simply stop enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, no longer prosecute growers of “medical” marijuana, and let some states walk away from provisions in the No Child Left Behind law (which, by the way, was co-authored by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, and passed the Senate by a 91-8 vote).

Mr. Obama’s Justice Department has even more flagrantly flouted the laws of the land. Out of the blue, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, reinterpreted America’s gambling laws (and dumped the decision on Christmas Eve so as to avoid scrutiny). More recently, Mr. Holder has decided to thwart congressional oversight by refusing to release documents on the disastrous “Fast and Furious” gun-running scheme, and he is actively fighting Florida for trying to expunge dead people from its voter rolls.

Now comes Mr. Obama’s decision to stop enforcing America’s immigration laws. The new policy states that illegal immigrants who were younger than 16 when they entered the country are eligible for a two-year exemption from deportation. Of course, the “deferred action process,” as Homeland Security Secretary Janet A. Napolitano called it, will apply to illegals up to age 30. (Think when they legally get their driver’s licenses they will also be handed a voter registration card?)

The increasingly desperate Mr. Obama, once a constitutional professor, knows full well he is circumventing Congress. In March 2011 he told a group of young Hispanics: “America is a nation of laws, which means I, as the president, am obligated to enforce the law. I don’t have a choice about that. That’s part of my job.

“Congress passes the law. The executive branch’s job is to enforce and implement those laws,” he said. “There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system that for me to simply through executive order ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as president.”

So why now? Politics. The Hispanic population in Florida, Virginia, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado may well decide the November election, and with working-class whites, religious blacks, disenchanted young people and Jews fleeing in droves, Mr. Obama is looking to shore up his support, even if that means violating his oath to protect the Constitution.

Continuing his nonstop campaign of division — black against white, rich against poor, straight against gay, religious against secular, race against race — the president is seeking to build whatever loose coalition of support he can. Forget bipartisanship; a coalition of the middle, Mr. Obama’s sole path to victory, he thinks, is to stir up so much discontent within different strata that he can win re-election.

Of course, the liberals who whined about President George W. Bush’s signing statements haven’t made a peep about Mr. Obama’s Napoleonic power grab.

“What’s ironic,” columnist Charles Krauthammer noted, “is for eight years, the Democrats have been screaming about the imperial presidency with the Bush administration — the nonsense about the unitary executive. This is out-and-out lawlessness.”

But that doesn’t matter when you are King Barack. The Founders were determined to make sure no American leader ever had the power King George III enjoyed. Which is why they also wrote this in the Constitution: “The president, vice president and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

George W. Bush’s vacation time (grand total)

487 days at Camp David
490 days at Crawford Ranch
43 days at Kennebunkport Compound

Total: 1020 days, more than 1/3rd of his presidency. Bush set the record for most vacation time taken by president.

Carter took 79 days in 4 years.
Clinton took 152 days in 8 years.

Reagan took 335 days in 8 years.
Bush Sr. took 543 days in 4 years!

GWShrub June 18, 2012 at 10:57 am

Lets see…487 days at Camp David, close to the office so one can presume that he worked. 490 days at Crawford Ranch, his home, where he did ranch work. 43 days at Kennebunkport, his parents home, probably did in fact vacation. Oh yeah, all other times he WORKED.

Obummer doesn’t go home, he always stays in hotels & eats out, he sends his wife ahead seperately in AF2, adding more expenses. Also, he DOESN’T WORK….except for spending money.

You ever hear of W stopping off at Dallas for a fundraiser on his way home?

toledofan June 18, 2012 at 9:50 am

I don’t think it’s really about the golfing as much as it is his lack of leadership and the continued hypocracy of blaming everyone else for our problems, the continued intrusion by the government into how we live, what we eat and especially what we should endure in high food and gas prices, and almost anything else we buy while they live lavishly off our dime.

Richard Whitney June 18, 2012 at 9:56 am

Bush played golf 24 times during his 8 years. And the media trumpeted that. This guy has played 100 rounds already in less than 4 years, has taken many expensive vacations, and the press looks the other way. He is a hyper-narcissist, lazy and self-absorbed. A journalist could write a book identifying all the traits of a hyper-narcissist that this guy displays.

Ernaldo T June 18, 2012 at 9:57 am

When he’s golfing, he’s not fundraising, or pulling executive order stunts that are wrecking the USA. I say retire the retard so he can golf every day….

Dasa Hasa June 18, 2012 at 10:10 am

Like virtually everything else he does, he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. As a Left Wing Elitist, he is convinced that he knows best. He is so good at what he does he can afford the time spent on golf because of his superior talent and productivity. Wasting that much time on golf shows that there is nothing else he can do about strengthening the economy and if this is the best he can do then it does not add up to a passing grade. As a veteran the image of the Commander in Chief (and believe me when I say just typing that makes me want to gag) playing golf while servicemen and women are in harms way sends an uncaring and hostile message. I would expect the enemy commander to do it, not our own. What makes it even worse is that he, nor his followers, see anything wrong with it.
