The White House today offered Politico a statement on why it has pressured news organizations to withdraw their stories about Malia Obama’s vacation to Mexico.
Michelle’s Communications Director, Kristina Schake, confirmed that the White House has been scrubbing the stories.
From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls.
Ironically, suppressing the stories has probably only added to the attention to the trip, since the media is now avidly focusing on the White House’s actions.
UPDATE: Santorum today waded into the Malia Mexico issue, saying with Malia’s trip, President Obama is suggesting to Americans it’s safe to travel to Mexico, when it’s not.
