Obama Called Smaller Bush Debt Rise “Unpatriotic”

by Keith Koffler on January 13, 2012, 8:16 am

President Obama Thursday quietly notified Congress that the government needs another $1.2 trillion to continue operating.

That’s both irresponsible and unpatriotic of him.

How do I know? A presidential candidate named Obama told me.

The new borrowing requested by the CURRENT president would raise the debt ceiling to $16.4 trillion. The debt stood at $10.6 trillion when Obama took office. That’s an increase of $5.8 trillion, nearly $2 trillion more than the “unpatriotic” figure cited by Obama in the video.

Sure, a portion of the new debt is carryover from the Bush administration. But Obama can still be labeled utterly “irresponsible.” I’m not serious about the “unpatriotic” charge. I don’t call my president unpatriotic, though as you’ve noticed, some people will do that.

Obama has done nothing during his three years as president to address the central cause of the debt run up – the unsustainable increases in entitlement spending.

And he has actually worsened the deficit with a feckless $800 billion stimulus bill and a new $1 trillion health care entitlement.

So this is not the Bush deficit. It is the Obama deficit, and it’s threatening to ruin the country.

H/T to one of our readers, Mike Lester, for showing me this. Mike is one of the country’s great cartoonists. You can find his work at mikelester.com.

He also said that having to raise the debt ceiling was the sign of a FAILED presidency. DO AS OBAMA SAYS NOT AS HE DOES.

The big difference Republicans wont admit is that what Obama was talking about is that Bush ran up the debt in times of good economy. What happened at the end of Bush and into Obama’s administration, was to stop the hemoraging economy, at least partially caused by what Bush initially did. Face it folks, McCain/Palin would have been elected and done the exact same thing, and you Ideological Republicans would be silent about it

Do you realize that ALL revenue bills originate in the House of Representatives? (See Constitution – Article I, Section 7.) All president’s send a budget to congress, but it is congress who legislates funding.
Do you know when Obama made this speech? On July 3rd, 2008 in Fargo, ND while campaigning for the office of president.
Do you know who controlled congress during that period of time? The Democrat party under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were responsible for all spending from January 4th, 2007 until January 5th, 2011.

Yes, Bush liked to spend money, but he could never have spent it without the aid of the Democrat majority in congress. We will never know if things would have been different under McCain. He was a progressive so probably not, unless Sarah had a say in it.

No wonder Mr. Obama wants more money, he has, since I have known anything about him, NEVER had a job. The money comes from the printing press ready to spend right? Oh come off of it sir. You are THE WORSE President since, well, NO ONE! You are it sir, you win first place in being the WORST!

wow, that is an interesting set of data on Wall Street. No wonder Wall Street contributed so much money to Obama in 2008. They bought a president that sacrificed the rest of the country for Wall Street!

So what you are saying is, the Wall Street 1% got rich as crap under Obama while the rest of America saw run away unemployment, inflation, foreclosures, 50% reduction in housing values, and more debt in four years than Bush did in 8 years fighting two wars, dealing with 9/11, and dealing with the Enron/Anderson fiasco which put people in prison.

I don’t know if you were being sarcastic or not, but your post should be in every republican commercial this fall.

There’s our name-caller again. At least you didn’t call us crackers this time.

Nobody trusts the stock market any longer. The Dow is like a bunch of junkies. Once Uncle Ben pumps in more quantitative easing (i.e., prints more money) the Dow will fly sky high (just in time for the election). Once the euphoria of the high wears off, the Dow will come crashing back to reality (right about the time our new president takes office).

This debt thing is so out of hand and I’m not sure anyone can stop it. I wrote a blog recently where I posted the debt as of Sept 30, which is the end of the fiscal year.

Date
Dollar Amount

09/30/2011
~15,000,000,000,000.00

09/30/2010
13,561,623,030,891.79

09/30/2009
11,909,829,003,511.75

09/30/2008
10,024,724,896,912.49

09/30/2007
9,007,653,372,262.48

09/30/2006
8,506,973,899,215.23

09/30/2005
7,932,709,661,723.50

09/30/2004
7,379,052,696,330.32

09/30/2003
6,783,231,062,743.62

09/30/2002
6,228,235,965,597.16

09/30/2001
5,807,463,412,200.06

09/30/2000
5,674,178,209,886.86

At the rate we are going, I suspect the debt will be about 18 trillion by the end of this fiscal year. Which would give Obama about 8 trillion for 4 years, though in fairness I think the first bailout Bush did didn’t go on the books until after Sept 30th, so it’s in the 2009 numbers.

It’s like being on a mountain looking down at a train wreck you can see is going to happen and there is nothing you can do about it.

Everything Obama does p*sses me off as does most of what he says. He even managed to p*ss me off when he got Usama because his gloat, sorry I mean informative speech, was peppered with “I got Usama, my adminstration got Usama, I, I, I, me, me, me, my, my, my” as if to say that he alone was responsible for getting him, what a narcissistic blowhard. His administration CONSTANTLY plays the race card, and that includes his wife. If you want to read a racist piece of tripe go look up Moochelle’s college thesis and then honestly tell me that she’s just as much a racist as all those who criticize her husband. And that’s what peeps are doing, criticizing his policies, besides he’s not black, he’s half black.

Anyone who’s ever had a leadership position can attest that before you were a leader, you thought it was so easy to make everything better, but once you became the leader, you realize that you didn’t know everything, and you have to do things differently than you thought you would. People do change their minds, and it’s not unreasonable to do so when the circumstances change. He may have said that back then, but now that he’s the Pres, he has more facts and may have to change his tune.

Also, politicians say things all the time, they say what people want to hear. Not just Obama, but all of them. Don’t be surprised when you hear them change their mind.

And things were different back then when he said this. When he took over office, the economy was heading down the toilet, so he had to do something drastic (this is what he thought would help).

Just saying, it’s not really fair to point to something someone said in the past, and then bring it up years later when everything is different.

Reply

Susan January 13, 2012 at 3:58 pm

This video was filmed 6 months before he took office, so it’s not exactly years later. Another quality of a good leader is taking responsibility. Obama has blamed everyone (Bush, Republicans, the Tea Party) and everything (Arab spring, tsunami in Japan, oil and gas prices, Europe) for the bad economy. Obama will never take responsibility for his failed policies.

It always amazes me that those who view President Barack Obama as the worst president in American history seem to believe that American history began Jan. 20, 2009 when he was inaugurated. In Albert Foster’s column on Jan. 8, 2012 debunking Obama (and me, if you can imagine) he says that if the president is re-elected “the country [will] continue borrowing money at an unsustainable rate.” As if this alleged “unsustainable borrowing” only started after Obama took office.

In fact Republican President George W. Bush and the policies he implemented are primarily responsible for most of the borrowing we are doing today.

Bush was the only President in American history who led our country into war without raising taxes to pay for the war. We borrowed the $1 trillion the Iraq War cost. Regardless of the cost consequences of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bush lowered tax rates, and tax revenues, without making sure spending was also reduced thereby squandering the Bill Clinton era surpluses.

Did any of you even read this article? When Obama took office BUSH had already run up the national debt to $10.6 trillion!! The article also says Obama ran it up another $5.8 Even a third grader can figure out BUSH ran up almost double the debt and don’t forget a portion of the debt Obama has run up includes interest on BUSH’s debt. The author.. sure a portion of the debt is carry over from the Bush administration yeah like 2/3!!!!!!!!
This reads like something FAUX news would put out to get people that aren’t capable of thinking for themselves to vote for a republican………..

Bush being responsible for a ‘portion’ of the debt is a bit of an understatement. It’s closer to 5x what Obama has contributed. Talk to an economist. The single driver of the huge increase in debt over the past decade has been the Bush tax cuts. You can try to avoid facts all you want, but hopefully the American voter won’t give into the fear-mongering and know the truth before they cast their ballot.
