Obama Compares Himself to Martin Luther King

by Keith Koffler on August 14, 2011, 12:15 pm

At least it wasn’t Jesus.

At a small, exclusive New York City fundraiser Thursday night featuring the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, Obama compared himself and his agenda to that of Martin Luther King Jr.

And now that King has his own memorial on the Mall I think that we forget when he was alive there was nobody who was more vilified, nobody who was more controversial, nobody who was more despairing at times.  There was a decade that followed the great successes of Birmingham and Selma in which he was just struggling, fighting the good fight, and scorned, and many folks angry.  But what he understood, what kept him going, was that the arc of moral universe is long but it bends towards justice.  But it doesn’t bend on its own.  It bends because all of us are putting our hand on the arc and we are bending it in that direction.  And it takes time.  And it’s hard work.  And there are frustrations.

Mr. Obama, I knew Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King was a friend of mine . . .

MrO should hang his head in shame to compare his travails to those of MLK or to imply that his agenda is the same as RevKing’s.
RevKing never once called his many opponents “enemies” or called for their punishment, he never ridiculed anyone to further himself, but instead, prayed for a day when all would be judged by their character, not the color of their skin.

12wlw12 August 13, 2011 at 2:50 pm

How dare that flea compare himself to Martin Luther King! He is no more than the dirt beneath King’s shoes!. We all shared King’s dream and prayed some day it would happen. Of course there are, and always will be, those with hate in their hearts, on both sides who will not give it up. But remember this, it was not only blacks marching with Rev. King. His dream was to bring America together.. Obama and his ilk have almost destroyed everything MLK stood and fought for… the unmetigated gall of that ‘person’ comparing himself to such a great man… He has no shame!!

Carol August 14, 2011 at 4:13 am

I agree, Obama does not even come close to Martin Luther King,

Bob White August 14, 2011 at 10:15 am

COMPARE THE TWO. DO A SEARCH!
King was managed by Stanley Levison, who wrote King’s speeches, did his taxes, and funneled USSR funds to the Communist Party USA. Investigation of Levison led the FBI to King. An FBI liberal follower of King investigated. There investigations concluded he was an embezzler, a hypocrite, a moral degenerate, and a worthless charlatan, who described himself as a Marxist.

King used SCLC funds to pay for liquor, and numerous prostitutes, both Black and White, who were brought to his hotel rooms, often two at a time, for drunken sex parties which sometimes lasted for several days, including the day he died. These types of activities were the norm for King’s speaking and organizing tours.

Obama was born of second generation Marxists, mentored, tutored and befriended Marxists all his life. Obama was a member of Man’s Country, a Chicago gay club. Obama was alledged to have had sexual relations with at least three male members of the church, two of whom were killed and the third died of AIDS within 6 weeks just before Obama started his presidential campaign.

Jeff Barnes August 14, 2011 at 11:06 am

Where do you find this stuff? I’d like a chance to read it at a reputable source.

walker_81 August 14, 2011 at 5:58 pm

MLK also ‘had some issues’ how he ‘earned’ his PhD… something about plagerism…?

sailorV August 14, 2011 at 10:32 am

It’s possible BO and MLK share the same shoe size so the comparison may be justified.

Star August 14, 2011 at 11:42 am

Latest gambit they are “testing”–becoming more combative on the economy–which translates into attacking the other side for campaign purposes rather than real change…
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/14/us/politics/14econ.html?_r=1&hp

Oh yeah–very King-esque!

Susan August 13, 2011 at 11:19 am

All this talk of August vacations has me wondering. Do you ever take a vacation Keith? Love coming to your blog each day to get an unfiltered view of what is happening in DC, and you are always here. Thank you for what you do.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was also a Republican. He believed in non-violent resistance, just like us Tea party advocates. “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” That is one of the quotes Obama had weaved into the oval office rug. It was actually Theodore Parker, an 1800′s abolitionist and not MLK who originally said those words. Too bad the progressives stole that quote and twisted its meaning. I’ll bet neither Theodore Parker nor MLK thought those words would one day be used to justify Obama’s version of social justice and redistribution of wealth.

Desert Fox August 13, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Susan: I was going to say the exact same thing you did. Obama does not have enough character to even be allowed to mention him in a speech, much less compare himself to MLK. And it should not be forgotten that it was the Republicans who got the Civil Rights bill passed, not the Dems.

Arturo Reaza August 13, 2011 at 9:25 pm

No.
“And I say to you today that if our nation can spend thirty-five billion dollars a year to fight an unjust, evil war in Vietnam and twenty billion to put a man on the moon, it can spend billions of dollars to put God’s children on their own two feet right here on earth…And one day, we must ask the question, “Why are there forty million poor people in America? And when you begin to ask that question, you are raising questions about the economic system, about broader distribution of wealth. When you ask that question, you begin to question the capitalistic economy.” —MLK jr.

Susan August 13, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Have my doubts about the veracity of this quote.

JIm August 13, 2011 at 11:31 pm

I think it is from “Beyond Vietnam.” Towards the end of his life King rightly labeled the US as the greatest purveyor of violence in the world. O’bama is carrying on the tradition.

Korbo August 14, 2011 at 1:42 am

It appears, just as it is quoted here, on several websites, but I cannot find a single attribution to where it comes from, in its entirety, cited with a source I could actually look up and verify. Part of it (but not the whole thing) is attributed to a 1967 speech, on one site. It certainly is not pulling up a MLK book, it’s just people who “quote” it. I hate mystery quotes. People run with them, and then they just turn up to be vapor.

Bob White August 14, 2011 at 10:09 am

The quote is consistent with his philosophy.

Terry August 14, 2011 at 6:26 am

King did, in fact, say this among many, many other derogatory remarks about American. People seems to have a very selective memory when it comes to people like him who has, over time, brought us to the brink of destruction. I suspect a great many of you commenting were not even alive when he was around and only know what you read about him in history books and listen to in socialist propaganda. Be careful what you wish for, you may get it.

Gerald August 14, 2011 at 11:16 am

President Johnson started the war on poverty and trillions have been spent on handouts since. Welfare has destroyed the nuclear family and made single parent families the norm, crime and drug use is rampant. That money could have been better spent strenthening the capitalist economy and the country’s infrastructure and feedom for buisnesses to create jobs. I never had a poor man sign my pay check have you???
We are taking the same path that the British took to build their welfare state. Do you read the news? Do you see what’s happening in England, Philly and Illinois????

hargen August 13, 2011 at 9:33 pm

Yes, I take a vacation, usually in July or August. I don’t see a problem with the President taking a vacation but he had 4 in 2009 for 58 days of vacation in his first year as President (apparently the toughest job in the world allows for this much time to unwind in your first year?). In 2010 he went on 6 vacations over 32 days. I had to wait a year to accrue 10 weeks vacation, how about you Susan?

Susan August 13, 2011 at 10:15 pm

I haven’t had a vacation in years. Maybe I’ll have time to take a vacation after Obama gets served his pink slip in November 2012. Actually, the vacation question was for Keith, the author of this blog.

KN August 14, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Heck I only had to work 7 years to get 3 weeks off, 12 years for 4 weeks off and 16 years for 5 (max).

Scullman August 13, 2011 at 11:27 am

This Marxist loser couldn’t find Selma with a map.

Scullman August 13, 2011 at 11:39 am

Obama said his parents “got together” and that he was born as a result of the Selma, Alabama March “Because some folks were willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama, Jr. was born. So don’t tell me I don’t have a claim on Selma, Alabama.” (Senator Barack Obama, Remarks At Brown Chapel AME Church, Selma, AL, 3/4/07)
Obama said at a prayer breakfast the next day, “If it hadn’t been for Selma, I wouldn’t be here.” (Anne E. Kornblut “Clinton,Obama link Selma March” WaPo,3/5/07)

Barack Obama was bornAugust 4th, 1961. Four years before the Selma March in 1965.

I guess his parents were time travellers, or else he’s a stone cold liar.

Geepers August 13, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Maybe it’s both. He just can’t remember when he was born, as his b/c is a fabrication along with the narrative of his entire life – all carefully crafted and put together but nothing is the truth.

Alice Polarbear August 13, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Well, Scullmam, I think we know the answer to THAT either-or proposition!

meadowlands August 13, 2011 at 2:00 pm

He is a liar and can’t keep his story straight. He probably doesn’t know where or when his true birthday is.

Nico August 13, 2011 at 3:01 pm

Great point. Obama has such grandiose and delusional views of himself, as narcissists typically do, he’s compared himself to just about anyone who was truly great in some way. The only thing “great” about Obama is that he’s the greatest fraud ever to be elected POTUS. In the real world he’s much more akin to Jimmy Carter, a weak, spineless loser. Marx, Stalin, Lenin and people like that at least had good leadership skills and were successful in convincing people to follow them, even though it was to their doom. Obama has zero leadeship skill and nobody follows him, since he’s the Great Follower.

Texan August 13, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Superbly stated; I couldn’t have said it better!

Bill August 14, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Marx, Stalin, Lenin are the leaders. O’bama is the follower.

Just2old August 13, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Liar

Cleary August 13, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Of course he’s a liar. But one has to feel sorry for him (sort of). Here he is – praised as the most important man to EVER grace the Universe – more important than Jesus, Mohammed, Moses, Einstein, Schweitzer, and even MLK – combined! – and now the bloom is off the rose, people who LO-O-O-V-E-D him can barely tolerate him, and he seems so small and petty. He is 100% responsible for squandering one of the most important opportunities in our time – to have someone of a different ethnicity show that he could govern as a patriot every bit as well as any of his predecessors. Instead, he put his own idiotic agenda on a pedestal, demonized everyone who disagreed with him, went into narcissistic-megalomania and has hollowed out the country’s strength in ways Al Qaida never could short of a nuke. The man is a menace. He needs to be a one term president, but if he had even an ounce of patriotism (he doesn’t) he’d Resign, Resign, Resign, Resign, Resign.

Stanley August 13, 2011 at 6:26 pm

Well said! It’s a shame that he’s so inept. The country, and especially blacks who are in desperate need of a positive role model, deserved a patriot with quality leadership skills. Obama is an abject failure on all fronts.

Forbes August 13, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Obama has trouble with time and dates: “There was a decade that followed the great successes of Birmingham and Selma in which he was just struggling, fighting the good fight, and scorned, and many folks angry.”

Selma to Montgomery march was in March 1965, MLK was killed in April 1968. That’s a passage of 3 years, 7 years shy of a decade.

Alice August 13, 2011 at 9:21 pm

Very true – he has trouble with time and dates, and the story line. There are several items in his book Dreams of My Father that have since been proven to be incorrect.

Bob White August 14, 2011 at 10:34 am

That’s because he is not the one who wrote it.

Roni August 14, 2011 at 3:42 am

Maybe that is the date they used on his “long form” birth certificate.

bili August 14, 2011 at 7:14 am

Definitely time travelers. Obama Sr.and mate were aliens from a distant planet. So are Democrats, liberals, progressives and environmentalists.

john squires August 13, 2011 at 4:02 pm

I’ll bet he couldn’t find it with a GPS.

Anonna August 13, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Obama wants to believe that his mother and father had sex because of a grand social movement for racial equality and not because each wanted to score some nooky that night.

mharper42 August 13, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Stanley Anne Dunham was smitten, but maybe the African student wanted nookie…

bobmac August 13, 2011 at 11:28 am

This socialist comparing himself to Martin Luther King is laughable.

Star August 13, 2011 at 11:40 am

One gigantic difference–King believed in something. Many things.

denise55 August 13, 2011 at 7:05 pm

yep, America

Star August 13, 2011 at 12:09 pm

Speaking of tasteless “handling,” there’s a story on what the president may encounter on that ludicrous bus hall or whatever it is–and one of his mouthpieces said: “The president does anticipate that he’ll detect a little frustration about the dysfunction in Congress and the strident position of some in Congress to put their parties and affiliation ahead of the country,”

Or…maybe anger, rage and disgust at a floppy, clueless chief exec? Think?

Granny Jan August 13, 2011 at 12:13 pm

I hadn’t even seen Politco’s whole quote. Obama feels like he’s being martryed but instead of the likes of Bull Connors who would be martyring him, it’s the entire Tea Party and maybe the entire Republican party. Words can’t express.

GL Lee August 13, 2011 at 12:45 pm

So Granny… is a difference of opinion with the POTUS your issue?

Granny Jan August 13, 2011 at 12:55 pm

My work speaks for itself but my opinion of Obama is low.

Kevin August 14, 2011 at 9:56 am

As a reminder Bull Connor was a Democrat. George Wallace was a Democrat. The Civil Rights Bill would not have passed without Republican votes. More Republicans as a percentage voted for it than Democrats. And of course it was Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves, a Republican.

typicalwhiteguy August 13, 2011 at 12:27 pm

I’d say he more closely compares to Rev. Jeremiah Wright than Rev. Martin Luther King…

mark timm August 13, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Wright is his mentor according to his own words.

John Q. Adams August 13, 2011 at 5:31 pm

WMR spoke to several well-placed sources in Chicago who reported that Jeremiah Wright, the pastor of Obama’s former church of 20 years, Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC) on Chicago’s south side, ran what was essentially a matchmaking service for gay married black professional members of the church, including lawyers and businessmen, particularly those with children. The matchmaking club was called the “Down Low Club” but references to it over the phone and email simply referred to the group with the code phrase “DLC.” The ruse, according to our sources, was to make anyone who was eavesdropping on the communications believe that the references were to the Democratic Leadership Council, also known as the DLC.
The gay DLC’s services were intended to keep ensure TUCC’s gay members avoided posting solicitations on web services like Craig’s List and refrain from cruising gay bars. The strategy was to protect them from getting busted and being “outed.”

Deborah August 13, 2011 at 12:32 pm

And you Mr. President are no Martin Luther King

Samael August 13, 2011 at 12:38 pm

MLK was against Vietnam. Obama can’t wait to find the next one.

MLK believed in civil disobedience. Obama ignores it.

MLK dreamed of equality. Obama’s White House enforces the deceptively named “Defense of Marriage Act”, tearing loved ones apart.

Yes, he’s got his hand on the arc, but he’s pushing from the opposite side, to keep it from moving too fast for Washington.

rjh August 13, 2011 at 12:38 pm

The clown in the White House needs to be tested for drugs…unbelievable.

Lisa Lamour August 13, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Why aren’t you reporting on the executive orders he’s been handing down? Specifically Order 13575, which will greatly impact the farming/ rural communities of our nation.

?max? August 14, 2011 at 2:03 am

How is this bad? Enlighten me?

mark timm August 13, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Flies on AF One with is own personal chef, parties with celebs, golfs almost every weekend, harvard Lw degree, middle class upbringing in Hawaii, elected to the Senate and then the Presidency due in large par to his ability to use his race to his advantage, and was not eklected in spite of it. And he has the audacity to compare himself to MLK? When is the last time he was in a Birmingham jail, or beat by a racist cop. This is sickening, what a loser.

ecomamacita August 13, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Not to mention he’s not really “black” per se, or even an American who has suffered through the system of inequality found in the white picket fences of the American Dream. MLK fought for his people…Obama fights his people! And dare we even bring out the list of legitimate accomplishments between these two?! MLK was a real community organizer/activist, Obama left multiple hot messes in Chicago impoverished neighborhoods – all under the guise that he was a big Saul Alinsky fan, and dreamed of making a difference for “his people” (who actually reside in Jakarta). At least Alinsky actually worked, unlike Obama and his dried up old predecessor who is still REALLY running the show – Hillary.

Dave August 13, 2011 at 12:41 pm

He’s a legend in his own mind. But why does he keep comparing himself to conservatives like Lincoln, Reagan and MLK, Jr.? They must be rolling over in their graves.

ecomamacita August 13, 2011 at 1:47 pm

I actually feel really bad for Jimmy Carter at this point. Carter at least tried to make a difference (not just talk about it), even going as far as putting solar panels on the White House. Carter was a good man, but not necessarily a great president. Obama is just a pathetic puppet for the Democrat’s corporate blue blood regime…

Bob White August 14, 2011 at 10:20 am

Put down the Kool-Ade
Both Obama and King are Marxists and plagiarists, so I guess the comparison is valid.

Obama was born of second generation Marxists, mentored, tutored and befriended Marxists all his life. His books were written by others. King was managed by Communists and plagiarized all his writings, but they gave him a doctorate anyway because it was PC.

Allie F. August 13, 2011 at 12:42 pm

The Obamanation is NO MARTIN LUTHER KING! Again, I continue to question the sanity of this man. He is slipping into a world of total delusion, a separate universe that has absolutely nothing to do with our reality of today! Perhpas a psych evaluation is in order for our faux President!

NowSwimBack August 13, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Well Hussein is a communist anti-White just like MLK (Michael King), so the comparison isn’t far off. Hussein has a sealed birth certificate and MLK has sealed FBI documents. They are the same in many ways.

Biggest difference would be everyone loved Dr. King. Dr. King worked to ensure everyone was judged based on the content of their character, not the color of their skin. You have decided skin color tells you all you need to know.

James August 13, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Mr. Obama, I knew Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King was a friend of mine . . .
MLK died 1968 Obama born 1961 Wow Obama was really connected at age 7

Marbran August 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Granny Jan August 13, 2011 at 4:22 pm

It was Keith’s.

Smogdude August 13, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Yes, it was Keith quoting Senator Lloyd Bentsen’s reply to Dan Quail in the 1988 vice presidential debates when Mr. Quayle attempted too compare himself to MLK.

Ginnie August 13, 2011 at 7:47 pm

You mean JFK

WingedVictory August 13, 2011 at 8:02 pm

StopGovtBondage August 13, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Barry compares himself to a lot of important and successful people: Abe Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and now Martin Luther King Jr.

Thing is – Barack Obama has earned nothing – there are NO ACCOMPLISHMENTS…..his positions have either been Affirmative Action, or positions have been purchased or politicized….nothing has ever been based on merit.

And with the chip on his shoulder regarding successful people – Obama is now tearing the country apart with his class warfare……MLK – I think not.

ss12 August 13, 2011 at 12:59 pm

And people out there still think this guy isn’t arrogant? This guy is truly amazing in his diatribe. Vote “present” in the next election if you like Obama. It worked for him.

Fed-up with Obama August 13, 2011 at 1:05 pm

The more Obama opens his mouth the more I am sure he is
nuts. He tells so many lies one can’t believe anything that
comes out of his mouth. The idiot is incompetent to hold any
elected office. He is out to destroy our country! IMPEACH HIM NOW!!!!

Ground Airforce One and chain him to his desk,,,he needs to put plans
in writing that are actionable to get people back to work. He certainly
does NOT deserve any further vacations until he is out of office.

wrongcolor August 13, 2011 at 1:06 pm

He can’t stop comparing himself to his betters because he’s got nothing on his own. I’d call him an empty suit, but the man is full of hate.

Hmm August 13, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Martin Luther King Jr was not known for hating the United States of America – try again, Mr. Obama. Martin Luther King Jr was not known for promoting divisiveness – try again, Mr. Obama. Martin Luther King Jr was not known for encouraging dependence on government handouts – strike three, you are out, Mr. Obama.

issues_ho August 13, 2011 at 1:12 pm

This is so disturbing. You ever notice how Obama is always trying to make sure everyone understands just how special he is? It is a really strange combination of arrogance and insecurity. Like he NEEDS you to know this. It really creeps me out.

Teri August 13, 2011 at 4:25 pm

You just said it in a nutshell. In everyday life, it turns people off when someone brags on themselves. That’s just human nature and Oblame is to stupid to consider that. You’ll never get people to band with you projecting yourself that way. “Leadership 101″ failed. But before this, he’s not qualified to feed the chickens. I’m surprised he can remember his way around the White House. Probably gets lost daily……

Keith Greene August 13, 2011 at 1:19 pm

LMAO!!! Comparing Barry to MLK is like comparing islam to peace. THERE IS NO COMPARISON!

JoeKidd August 13, 2011 at 1:19 pm

In his epic “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. warned of “drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.”

Today, Obama is eagerly serving up that cup.

JoeKidd August 13, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Americans are citizens of The UNITED States of America — not Obama’s divided states of America.

They belong to one race: The HUMAN race.

And under their skin, they bleed ONE color.

Now Obama may think he can get that color to run in the streets — he has been busy stirring his pot of Hate — but he’s wrong! You only separate colors when doing wash.

Alice Polarbear August 13, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Geepers August 13, 2011 at 1:25 pm

The first comparison he made to himself was messianic – “if elected the seas would cease to rise and the planet heal.” Then it was to Reagan and now MLK. Since his entire life is one, big, put-together fabrication, he’ll keep coming up with different comparisons but none will ever fit. Especially the messianic one.

RA0725 August 13, 2011 at 1:26 pm

MLK fought against rascism. You, Mr. Obama, are the polar opposite.

forrest August 13, 2011 at 1:27 pm

The narcissist in chief has also compared himself to Lincoln, FDR, Kennedy, and even Reagan. The only problem is that none of these folks were unaccomplished political hacks. If morons like Obama and the rest of the idiot democrat party would actually follow the teachings of MLK Jr. then we wouldn’t have the perpetual racial hogwash, but of course there’s no graft for the left in that. The democrat left are the most racist people I know of.

Obama is not even close to MLK. First and foremost MLK was willing to die for his beliefs, Obama can’t even make a decision that might result in him being a one term president.

Luke August 13, 2011 at 1:32 pm

How dare he compare himself to MLK, MLK gave people freedom and Obama is taking peoples freedom away.

Remember Dr. King very well.

First of all, he was an American and a Patriot! He did not want a socialist welfare state, nor did he substitute his loyalty to this Country for anti- American interests.

He was not a redistribution of wealth fanatic, but really wanted a level playing field. Most of all, his goal for all was a real policy of “a hand up”, not “a hand out”. Big difference.

For this guy to compare Dr King to himself is like throwing a rose into a pile of fertilizer. (Which is the only thing that was really “shovel ready” in this administration).

He is like Michael King they’re both frauds.

Kiba August 13, 2011 at 1:34 pm

I wish they had more in common………..

Pastor emeritus Nathan Bickel August 13, 2011 at 1:39 pm

It’s common knowledge that our unconstitutional non “natural born” bogus “president” is narcissistic. But, you have to give him credit. By comparing himself with Dr. King, Obama is only going a step farther expressing the [his] legend that is in his own mind……….

King calmed the stormy waters. Obama creates chaos everywhere he goes.

What an arrogant jerk obama is. Delusional, manipulative, and dangerous for the entire planet.

How ’bout them drones he’s playing war with? And doing it all on his own without Congressional approval. Congress should impeach him, and the Nobel Committee ought to be screaming to get their Peace Prize back.

Todd August 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm

” the Nobel Committee ought to be screaming to get their Peace Prize back.”

A used condom would be worth more.

Jim from AR. August 13, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I would compare Obama to MLK but he surely would not like my comparison. You can compare night to day, rain to drought, salt to sugar, good to evil. The last is the comparison between MLK and Obama. King tried to do what was good for his people and what God would have him do (he thought) Obama does what Lucifer would have him do and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. The last comparison may come to be, How did Obama die compared to how did MLK die. We will just have to wait and see, I guess.
