A new crop of nice young things is ready to be trained to “organize for power,” in the words of Saul Alinsky, the author of the “Rules for Radicals” community organizing manifesto whose methods President Obama has adopted to great effect throughout his career.
In an email dispatched today from the headquarters of Organizing for America – the zillions-strong grassroots outfit that during the campaign was known as Obama for America – members are urged to get a little more active by becoming “summer organizers.” Says the email:
Summer organizers will be trained in the basic principles that have always built and powered effective grassroots movements. They’ll work directly in communities around the country to organize supporters street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood.
Click the link and go to the website, and you see this:
This summer, Organizing for America will train a new team of summer organizers. We’re looking for a new generation of organizers — not only to help us win elections but also to help strengthen our democracy in communities across the country.
If you apply and are selected, you’ll be trained in the basic organizing principles that have helped to build and power this movement, and you’ll be assigned to a specific community where you’ll get to work organizing supporters.
Interesting, you’d hardly know this had anything to do with reelecting Obama president – like you’re just in it for the experience and to learn some new skills. It’s like telling people to get some experience boating by joining the Navy.
Either the president’s brand is not what it was, or there’s something more subtle at work.
Maybe the former. Though the video was targeted at Kool Aid-drunk OFA members, it currently as only 59 “likes” and full 21 “dislikes” on YouTube.
