As of now, I am in control here, in the White House

Golf is Back! Obama’s 60th Outing as President

Well, the mercury has crept back up above 60 degrees here in Washington, and so it’s time once again for President Obama to head out to the golf course.

This is the president’s 60th time golfing as president, meaning Obama has spent two months of his presidency on the golf course.

The rounds usually take about five hours, including motorcading back an forth to the course.

According to statistics compiled by CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller, who keeps close tabs on the president’s activities, Obama played 30 rounds in 2010, 28 rounds in 2009, and two this year, including today.

George W. Bush gave up golfing in 2003, explaining why he did it in a 2008 interview with POLITICO.

“I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf,” he said. “I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.”

Some think Obama should follow Bush’s example. But Obama clearly is addicted to the game and probably feels he needs to play to get his mind off of Washington, generally choosing the company of young administration staffers instead of lawmakers or senior aides.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is an avid golfer too, and unlike Obama, plays with lobbyists.

Obama’s on the links with his usual posse. From the pool report:

The president, in a black cap and light black jacket, emerged from the White House at 1 p.m. for what I believe is the President’s first golf outing this year stateside. A 10-vehicle motorcade departed a minute later and stopped at all stop signs and mixed with traffic for the uneventful 22-minute ride to Andrews AFB.

POTUS’ golfing buddies today include Ben Finkenbinder of the press office, Marvin Nicholson, the president’s trip director and David Katz, a Dept of Energy staffer.

  1. Your math leaves a bit to be desired.

Two months is ~ equal to 720 hours. President Obama has golfed 60 times, according to your article, and it takes ~ 5 hours each time. That’s 300 hours. Since he’s been President for 2 years, a total 17530 hours. So… he’s spent 0.017% of his time as President golfing, not two months.

  2. “..Probably feels he needs to play to get his mind off Washington…”

A serious question for Keith Koffler: How much time does this President spend with his mind on Washington”? He seems disinterested and detached from the usual presidential haunts of adminstration, foreign policy, domestic policy, legislation, government reform, the budget, debt and deficits, or the economy. So what DOES he do? (Of substance).

  3. Meeting with Gillard – to address the increasing Moslem violence in Oz and globally, no doubt.

Don’t worry, Australian Christians, Barry is looking out for you.

  4. We love that the President is a golfer, it’s great for the game! The President should take his two girls out to the putting green (on the White House Grounds) and use the custom Sweet Spot putters we sent them so they could help promote Play Golf America’s Family Golf Month.

  5. What a loser! You’re bitchin’ about Obama playing golf? I would submit that the time spent away from the White House through his 60th golf trip is well below the number of days Dubya had “blown off” by this time in his first non-presidency. Why don’t you make a comparison as to the number of ACTUAL press conferences each held at this point in their “first” term? If you wanted to take it a bit further, you could also compare “guest lists” between the two Presidents and see which one appeared the most times ONLY in front of a “selected audience”.

  6. the world is burning and the knee grow golfs…. get his bojangle a$$ out of office now…and take the cow of a wife with him. the only thing she is good for is natural gas…

  7. I am embarrassed for the U.S. – at a time when we should be showing compassion and empathy for all of the loss of life in Japan, that our president should decide this is the appropriate time for him to go out and have fun is simply disgraceful.

  8. At least those five hours or so he is not colluding with Holder or other
Democrats on how further to bankrupt the nation. I wonder what these
golf outings cost? We have elected a king, or at the least a person
who lives like a king at our expense.

  9. Seems like a lot of business people and CEO’s play golf. The activity of walking, upper body movement and quiet conversation have to be good for deep thinking. And how many of those rounds were played while the Pres was on vacation??? I give him a PASS.

  10. Wow people still don’t see the big picture for the pile of shot that they are stuck in up to their necks this individual is not a u.s. citizen we do have right but we have not come together . Read the declaration read the law we the people not we the gov. . This pos has spent money on vacations andgolfing at least bush worked out his ranch he had video piped on to his ranch from the white house and he didn’t play around of golf. . This pos has just spent and. Spent not just this his wife comes over the tv no child left be hide act wastful. Look at all the teachers across this nation. That has lost their jobs look at all the czars that works for them and her which has no position in the goverment.

  11. Did it bother you this much when Dubya took all his vacations (many more days than Obama)? Or weren’t you aware of his track record? In hindsight it was a blessing that he didn’t spend more time on the job and screw up the country worse than he did.

  12. I can see why you, Keith Koffler, are no longer working in the White House. This website and Fox News is more in line with your narrow-minded and distorted views. You really shouldn’t call yourself a “reporter” if you lack substance.

  13. Give the President a break for God’s Sake.
The man is nover far from disaster around the world…he is under National and Internatiional pressure constantly.
He is entitled to plqy 18 holes of golf.

Oh, I forgot, blacks don’t play golf.

  15. Do you need some other expert articles in relation to this one?
?! We would want to explore more info on this particular area of interest!
!!! :-) I like the postings, but I really want a bit more info concerning Golf.
    Thanks alot : )!!!

  16. You say:
“This is the president’s 60th time golfing as president, meaning Obama has spent two months of his presidency on the golf course.

The rounds usually take about five hours, including motorcading back an forth to the course.”

    ummmmmm….let’s do some math.
5 hours times 60 rounds of golf is equal to 300 hours, divided by 24 hours in a day….12.5 days….not “two months.”

    Republican morons.

  17. wonderful post, very informative. I ponder why the opposite specialists of this sector
don’t realize this. You must proceed your writing.
I am sure, you have a great readers’ base already!
