Obama dropped in on a shocked high school in Wisconsin yesterday. From the pool report.
Surprise stop: La Follette High School
(As in Robert L. La Follette)
Lots of shrieking — “Oohh myyy god! It’s the president!”
Obama posed with a photo with five volleyball players.
And he walked over to the football team — the Lancers — huddled in the middle of the football practice field.
The freshman, sophomore and varsity teams welcomed him with a 1 … 2 … 3 … Clap
Your pooler was kept five yard lines away, so very, very small snippets of conversation could actually be heard.
Obama stood while the players all took a knee around him.
At one point Obama was asking question, and the team replied “Yes sir”
ABC’s boom mic man said there was some ribbing of the coach and the team gave the president a t-shirt
At the end of the pep talk, the players got up, raised their helmets and did a cheer — sounded like “Lancers!”
(Bill Burton reported back to your pooler that Obama encouraged the kids to work hard on the field and in classroom. He said the Packers lost to the Bears last night because of “mental mistakes and turnovers.” He also talked about his own experiences playing football, basketball and tennis.)
The ladies tennis team had been sitting on the sidelines. Obama walked over and shook hands.
Again you pooler was kept at a distance.
Afterwards he greeted the throngs of students gathered around the school gym.
